| Cure my ignorace: MMOs and RPGs |
[Jul. 15th, 2009|11:14 pm] |
First, some quick backstory. Having played Morrowind and hated it, then played Oblivion and loved it. I assumed all the people that said Morrowind was better were the usual set of people who worship the alter of nostalga, saying stupid things like how Halo 1 was the best in the series, and that Command and Conquer is the best RTS ever made.
Recently, listening to a British gaming podcast, the hosts were off on a tangent and the eldar scrolls popped up. It was during this discution I learned the reason why Morrowind players like it over Oblivion. They said that oblivion was much better mechanically, but the story is cleche, repetitive, and constantly 'on'. The end is nigh, but no one seems to care. Morrowind, by conrast, has no feeling of impossing doom until near the end when zombies start crawling out of the walls of your bed room. It also means you can faff about without it seeming odd that you would playing darts when the apolypse is coming.
Learning this, I started thinking that maybe I'm wrong about other games I percieve as pointless and whos fanbase I judge as idiots. So, what about MMOs? Even the few that seem interesting I would never pay the stupid amounts of money for. I also don't see the appeal of WoW. Leveling for levelings sake, a game which is a chore by design. I really don't get it. I am not a fan of online play and 'games' like SL bore me to tears, and only occupy my hard drive as a means of contacting people. I like coop or the odd deathmatch with friends, but that's about it as far as online goes, and what's so special about WoW? Why not Tabularsa or City of Heroes or Auto Assault or anything even mildly interesting?
While were at it, why are Diablo and JRPGs still popular despite being hidious attrosities by todays standards? (Star Ocean on PS2 was canny, but the 360 is typical JRPG crap) |

But yeah, go check this out! Last time I looked, it was on the front page when you open Steam. :) *wags* Now I just have to get DIRT. |

| World Record My Arse! |
[Jul. 9th, 2009|02:35 pm] |
Logged on Xbox today expecting a friend request, when I saw a vid on the front page. "Games world record" "Oh?" I said, and clicked on it, what followed is high caliber nerd rage.
The 'record' being broken was longest time playing a driving game. 24 hours of burnout to be presice, with toilet and food breaks. Step up some 20 something popular guys and gals who set about playing.
"We're 3 hours in, and it's getting really hard now." Says some specticalled moby look a like.
3 hours of burnout, on a comfy beanbag to much? WTF! What's this guys day job? Watching tele? Clearly he's never had to put LAN cable through a ceiling or anything most of us would call work. 3 hours? Back in the day I played Resident Evil 1 and 2 without a memory card. Hell, even Dreamcast Magazine did a 24 hour race for the Le Mans game. Tell you what Guinis Record people. Put a camera in my room and I'll play Fallout 3 start to finish for you. Look at my memory card with 12 hour Timesplitters session on it when I wasn't going for the record.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks that we, as actual game players, could do better. We have real life that gets in the way, but most of the people could do this, even if the prefered a different genre. I honestly don't believe that this is anything special. Some parties I've been to have pretty much just been this but with Halo and CoD. |

| Zeno Clash and Conduit |
[Jun. 25th, 2009|08:33 pm] |
Giant Bomb posted about a game called Zeno Clash on XBLA. I've never heard of it. http://www.giantbomb.com/zeno-clash-trailer/17-482/ By the looks from the trailer, it seems to be a First Person Beat em up like condemned or that xbox game I forget the name of. Is it any good?
They also posted a vid of the first half hour of the conduit, which is due out tomorow. I don't know how the game is yet, but acting like a twat and genrally not giving the game a chance makes them look foolish. Aliens? conventent. Warp Gates? Stargate. Control to sensitive? Complain, and then turn UP the sensitivity, and complain even more.
I get critasism, and I am expecting this game to be average, but I expect critasisms to be reasonable. Reviewers jumping on the 'this is a cheap halo knockoff' bandwagon is getting kind of annoiying. |

| Perfect Dark 1 360 Port |
[Jun. 24th, 2009|01:09 pm] |
Perfect Dark 1 is getting a ported to 360, if you hadn't guessed from the topic title. Why is this good? Well, PD is one of my all time favourite games, it's main flaws being a crap framerate and all my controllers being broke, or at least not up to the job.
Emulators don't do much better, with dodgy controls that don't really work on any other controler.
The port promises sharper graphics (I assume this is just high res screen, but it might include textures as well) 60fps and updated controls.
All I can say hurray. I will be getting this if it works. Hopfully they won't mess around with it to much. I'm hoping they add checkpoints into the missions. I also assume the faces in the game will be changed. If you don't know, the faces of the baddies were scans of various rare employees including those who went on to form free radical and a few guests (including the then editor of Nintendo Magazine UK)
Maybe the cut feature of scanning your own face in will come back. I doubt it though. |

| Spore and its haters |
[Jun. 23rd, 2009|01:10 pm] |
I think I've figured out what bothers me so much about the hate for Spore and its addons. People are trying to, in essence, tell me what something should be worth to me. Do folks just not understand the most basic aspect of economics, that items are worth whatever someone's willing to pay for them?
So what if you think the parts pack was stupid and worthless? There are people out there who are not you, who think it's worth what they're charging, and will buy it for what they're charging. So what if Spore wasn't what you wanted it to be? It's exactly what some folks wanted, so why begrudge them for liking it?
You don't see me calling people out for buying Lindens or stuff in Gaia or cosmetic items in those free-to-play MMOs, so why should people whine about what I choose to buy? |

I refuse to wait any longer, but I don't want to go on an endless Flash/Java gaming trip like a few months ago. A game that flew under the radar at E3 I only just heard about. It's a DS platform puzzle game where you can summon almost any object. (over 10,000) to use to solve the levels.
I'm the demo, the guy uses a trampline to get a item out of a tree. Kills a vampire with gralic. He tried typing in Vampire Hunter, and hellsing appears before getting his arse kicked. The real highlight is when the guy playing, for a laugh, types in cthullu. Yes, you can summon a cosmic horror to help you out in this game.
If it can live up to the promise, it could be good.
I wonder how far you get with a space marine, jetpack, raptor and a chainsaw?

| Goozex and my 'currently playing' |
[Jun. 13th, 2009|10:57 am] |
First off, I want everyone to start using Goozex if you do a lot of console gaming. I started using the service a few weeks ago and I've already traded out a few games for a bunch of points, and I've received Mass Effect, and a few other games already. Basically, you give away games for points (100 points = $5) and then spend points to receive games. The costs of doing it to you is that you have to pay your own shipping to send ($2 for me) and pay a $1 service fee to receive (a $1 'token') If you join using my referral code, we both get a free $1 token, after you make your first trade: http://www.goozex.com/referral.asp?idr=6197305592932
/end whoring
As for what I'm playing, well, I'm still addicted to Demigod, and Natural Selection 2 is on my plate for the future, and I jsut came across a really good Space Sim a-la Freelancer called 'Evochron Legends' that was made by ONE guy, and is pretty impressive. It's a Do Off and do Whatever You Want game, and supports singleplayer offline play, and multiplayer Corp Wars. I played online a bit yesterday, on a lightly populated server. Your single-player character can be used in multi. It's keen. I also started playing Assassin's Creed for PC, Tales of Vesperia for 360, and Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom for 360. I might also get Guilty Gear 2: Convenant for 360 (Using Goozex!!) since it looks like yet another DotA game, and I loves me some Demigod! Oh, and I've been playing a bunch of DS games too. ^.^ Oh, and ooone final thing, when the new Monster Hunter Unite comes out for PSP, I'm totally gonna be rubbing my whore body all over that! Mmmm Monster Hunter. So now I need to go to Crimson Skys and tell the California group that I wanna hang out with em! |

| City of Heroes - anyone still play? |
[Jun. 10th, 2009|04:04 pm] |
I just recently picked up City of Heroes. I had played the trial back when CAD celebrated the release of City of Villains by having a huge crew of their fans play villains for the trial (we had a super team that I made with 300+ members in a matter of minutes). I enjoyed it then, but I was too into WoW. Currently, I quit WoW and rediscovered City of Heroes. I finally went out and bought it.
So, my question, I noticed there were some people in this comm that played on the Guardian server for City of Heroes...but I was wondering if a furry super group existed on any of the servers?
I don't really plan on playing for much farther past this summer (I am currently waiting for Champions Online to come out in the Fall - a new super hero MMO from the original makers of CoH - Crpytic) but right now it is only my roommate and I playing. We have a super group on Infinity, but we haven't really been able to recruit anyone (just doesn't seem like a very populated server in the first place). I don't usually like just PUGing, I feel more comfortable in a group setting...so anyone still playing?
Edit: Sweet, I added both of you guys. My global handle is @RiotLion |

| Week in Gaming |
[Jun. 7th, 2009|12:45 am] |
So far I'm enjoying both Killzone and Final Fantasy 4 The After Years, though I will admit that After is getting far more attention. Killzone 2 is a good game and I do enjoy their use of cover, but its also somewhat generic in terms of art direction and enemy design, so as good as it looks it fails to stand out as anything other than above average. The After Years is, BRUTALLY hard, almost every battle is challenging and the threat of your party being wiped out is both constant and real. Surprisingly the story may actually be an improvement over the original games, as it makes great use of characters old and new and keeps the games story going at a break neck pace. Square, Mistwalker, Atlus, you guys should be making more serial RPG's for WiiWare, PSNetwork, and X-Box Live Arcade. They don't have to be long, and they don't have to be pretty, just make the gameplay hard and the stories interesting and I'll buy them.
In other news, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Tetris, I will finally be buying an actual copy of the game. At this point I just need to decide whether to grab it for the Wii, 360, or PS3. Additionally I may buy some more downloadable games soon, as more and more I'm coming to appreciate shorter more approachable content.
On a related front, about time I updated my list of planned game purchases for the next couple months.
Summer
The Conduit
Wii Sports Resort
The Fall
Ratchet and Clank Future 2
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
Winter
Uncharted 2
Fragile
New Super Mario Bros Wii
Might seem somewhat modest, but I'm excluding DS releases because that's mostly a backlog of old games I still need to grab. The only new DS game I'm really looking forward to is Dragon Quest 9.
*Edit*
Beat the first episode of The After Years, takes roughly eight to ten hours and ends on a cliffhanger. Bah, cliffhangers! |

| Advice wanted |
[Jun. 7th, 2009|12:03 am] |
A few questions I was hoping you dapper chaps could help me out with.
1- PS2 picture quality. I've got a HDTV, lovly, great, but my PS2 seems to have horrendous picture quality. I'm using a standard SCART lead for it. However, the writing is quite blurry, making large blocks of text hard to read. I never noticed this problem before, and I know the PS2 has limits. Any ideas how to get a sharper picture from a PS2?
2- Scrolling beat 'em ups. Got castle crashers, madworld and No More Heroes. I feel the need to punch people in the face. Anyone know any other good scrolling beat em ups on 360, DS or wii?
3- Star Ocean 360 Just came out here yesterday. I'm not a JRPG fan, in fact, I usually hate them. The PS2 one was one of the few JRPGs I liked (up until that stupid bint starting killing herself, but I digress) Is it worth a full the full price or should I leave it to cheapen a bit?
Thanks |

| Perhaps Sony isn't so out of touch... |
[Jun. 5th, 2009|02:07 pm] |
| [ | Current Mood |
| | okay | ] | I came across this little article on Engadget. Basically Sony's attempting to work on a program that will allow gamers who buy a PSP Go to digitize their UMD collection. Engadget has not been able to confirm how much the program will cost, if anything, but they're speculating that it will probably be free. While this isn't a perfect solution I'm somewhat glad to hear that Sony isn't totally out of touch. (Though the fact still stands that this device is aimed at grabbing new PSP owners.)
Now if they'd do something about the $249 dollar price point perhaps this hardware revision could be a winner. Maybe. |

| The After Years Impressions |
[Jun. 4th, 2009|01:37 am] |
Well, I just spent eight bucks to download Final Fantasy 4: The After Years, for Wii Ware, and although I've been playing it for only about ten minutes it feels like a breath of fresh air. The graphics may be old but they look more like the visuals from FF6 than the original, the sound is good although it sounds a bit mono, and the controls are simple and straight forward, the same you always knew. What's really compelling so far is that the main character was instantly compelling after the first few lines of dialog. This is a pretty amazing feat seeing as many games protagonists haven't been able to compel me after dozens of hours of play. Additionally, the opening scene feels almost identical to the original game, the circumstances are different, but it was an instant blast of nostalgia that made me smile.
Now aside from the visuals the battle system seems to have been given the biggest overhaul. In addition to the typical Active Time driven battles, we now have a Band/Bond system that appears to be similar to Dual Techs from Chrono Trigger. Finally there is a new moon phase system which affects the strength of various commands based on the phase of the moon. How these will affect the classic battle system I'm unsure, but at a glance they appear interesting at least in concept.
Anyhow, I'll let you all know how the game turns out when I finish it. Additionally I'm also playing through Killzone 2, I'll throw out a quick review once I have a better feel for it. |

| Groovy sounding E3 games |
[Jun. 3rd, 2009|05:08 pm] |
UPDATE- Added Just Cause 2 UPDATE- Added Fallout 3 Point Lookout UPDATE- Closing, Brink and Borderlands
Even though all the big reveals have been made, I've been reading alot of previews, some of which made me excited for games I never cared for.
Brink + Borderlands Coops FPSs, I love coop. Brink is class based and trying the whole crossplayer thing, where playing online will give you double XP or other rewards SP players don't get. I can see this one being populated with twats. Borderlands does the coop thing too, but focuses on the guns. Given how Alien Cornal Marines was just a logo this year, these 2 get a mention. I might get them if I know other who are playing them, so I won't have to team up with internet kids.
Fallout 3 DLC - Point Lookout Giantbomb once compaired Fallout DLC to episodic games in that short, cheap add ons come out every month or so for it. Point Lookout is DLC for Fallout 3 and adds an interesting looking swamp area full of strange mutant zombies and backwater weapons. http://www.giantbomb.com/fallout-3-point-lookout-trailer/17-765/
Just Cause 2 Just cause 1 never appealed to me, and watching a guy swing around and wrist mounted grappling hooks reminded me of spider man. However, then it just went mental. The highlights of the demo for me included tying a tough baddy to a gas conister, lighting it and sending him flying. Another cool bit was a car chase jumping from car to car, tying one to a lamppost to send in whipping back, and a groovy scene where he has a on car gunfight. I'm not normally into these games, and I probley won't buy it, but I'll keep my eye on it. http://www.giantbomb.com/just-cause-2-walkthrough-video/17-791/
Left 4 Dead 2 This looked live L4D with a day time reskin. I was thinking 'more of the same, whatever.' However, one reading about it, sounds great. As well as more of the same, the big new thing for me is that the AI director can alter the level gemotriy itself, as well as generate entire sections from a number of premade bits. There is also melee combat and different ammo types.
UPDATE- The fanboy/hater backlash has already started on this one. Posts of how L4D 1 is unfinished, and how valve are making people buy updates that TF2 players get for free. My Opinion- TF2 basicly has gotten only a few maps, a few modded weapons, and recently hats in the year or so it's been out. Given how L4D is adding alot of new maps, and content I doubt you could do with a simple patch or 2, I feel it's fine.
UPDATE 2- Boycott L4D2 community on Steam has 3100 members. All based on a 60 second clip. http://steamcommunity.com/groups/L4D2boycott
Mass Effect 2 I loved the first one, and have been hyped for this. Every problem with the first seems to have been fixed. Better action, framerate, no pop in, no lift rides, more varied dialog, better side quests, better and more varied planets, new weapons, better magic controls.
Singularity A 360 FPS with a time control aspect. Instead of simply slowing time, you can age or youth entire objects. It's hard to explain, and the trailers make it look like a cleched shooter, but read about if you can. In the E3 demo being showed, there's a scene where a ruined building youths before your eyes, and as you run through it it starts ageing and collapsing around you. There a trailer somewhere that shows him ageing a tiny plant into a huge tree to knock an obsticle out of way.
Supreme Commander 2 Works on smaller machines then the first, but they have increased the graphics by making them chunky rather then detailed. You also get money for killing stuff, which will (hopfully) give people a reason not to sit back and farm rez. http://www.gametrailers.com/video/e3-09-supreme-commander/49801?type=flv
E3 is over, some stuff I liked, some stuff I didn't care for. I understand that my opinion of certain games, mostly nintendos, it at odds with most peoples. There was a hillarious section of the Giantbombcast where they take the mic out of the Nintendo conferece. Youtube link to the clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOI4XJecOc0
Some good stuff. Alot of games |

| Final Thoughts |
[Jun. 2nd, 2009|02:31 pm] |
Huge mis-step of making the PSPgo incompatible with UMD games aside, I felt the Sony press conference was the strongest of the three. Once it got to the games it was clear they had a lot to show and thankfully they didn't waste too much time on known quantities. The motion controller demo was kind of neat, but considering they don't even have a formal name for it yet I doubt we'll see it this year, and unless Sony is giving these away I cannot picture developers taking advantage.
Although it was a bit on the boring side, what I caught from the Nintendo Press conference was, pretty pleasing. The 2D Mario concept looks fun, Mario Galexy 2 appears to be at least a competent platformer, and Metroid other M is very exciting. Unsurprisingly Nintendo spent too much time touting things like Wii Fit Plus and the Wii Lie Detector, but given how much of their consumer base loves those types of games I cannot say I blame them. All in all, I'd call this an improvement over last years conference, but to really get a home run I would have wanted another Wii Zelda title like Twilight Princess and new Crystal Bearers footage.
Highly impressive Mass Effect 2 Demo aside, I thought that this year the Microsoft Conference was the weakest. Their big reveal was the Natal and that took up almost all the oxygen, I cannot help but feel as if Microsoft would've better used its resources to just fund more exclusive game development. I mean, sure they have shooters and plenty of action games, but I've still yet to see an impressive platformer on the platform, so we can always use more development. Admittedly I don't pay too much attention to multi-platform titles as I do exclusives and Microsoft is occasionally weak in this department. Regardless, even among their multi-platform titles only a few were both sufficiently new and sufficiently impressive.
PS: I had assumed UMD compatibility for the PSPgo because the alternative would have been a stunningly stupid move. Once again I assumed Sony's execs to be marginally competent and was bitten for it.
Edit
Apparently Nintendo did show some new Crystal Bearers footage in the part of the Nintendo conference I missed. So they were only a Wii Zelda title short of a home run. |

| Most Exciting News So Far |
[Jun. 2nd, 2009|03:03 am] |
Winners
Fragile This is some Pre-E3 news, but this is one of the games I was really hoping for. Hopefully xSeed will indeed be able to get it out in America by the end of the year.
Front Mission Evolution This is exciting because its being handled by Double Helix, the studio responsible for Silent Hill Homecoming. Although they didn't quite nail Silent Hill's atmosphere, a warlike atmosphere should be much easier to nail. I'm curious to see how they handle the Americanization of a franchise thats historically been bigger in Japan than America.
Flops
Natal It's, an, eyetoy! Seriously I don't know if people are just easy to impress or whatever, but this doesn't drastically differ from any of the camera accessories that Sony or Microsoft has offered in the past. Sure there's a second lens so it can determine depth a bit better, but its still going to be limited to about the same uses as an EyeToy, as most of the features they tout are highly processing power dependent. It would be good for head tracking, but I doubt we'll see many games take advantage of that if only because this is coming out way too late in the consoles lifespan, and because Microsoft is unlikely to bundle the camera with new consoles. Not that its useless or anything like that, but Microsoft is over-promising and so far I'm not hopeful they'll be able to handle distribution correctly.
All in all, so far I haven't seen too much to get excited for. Natel was Microsofts big reveal and I for one was hoping the rumors of a re-branded EyeToy would prove false. Aside from they talked about some sequels to games I didn't particularly like in the first place, and one or two titles I have some interest in but not too much. The PSPgo was of course leaked early and aside from that I don't really know what Sony has up their sleeves. I want to be hopeful that Nintendo will finally announce new Mario and Zelda games for the Wii but I'm forcing myself to keep my expectations low there.
Anyhow, kinda curious. What has excited all of you the most so far, and what announcements are you hoping for out of Sony and Nintendo. I mean I know I may be underwhelmed by what I'm seeing, but who knows, you guys may have a completely different impression.

I was in a game shop today, buying Army of 2, when I saw on one of the TVs a trailer for a game that looked weirdly familier. It was cowboys in steampunk, nothing special. I stared at the screen for a bit when I recogised something memorable. A steam powered bike driving alongside a train. It was then it hit me.
There was a SP mod for Unreal Tourniment 2004 with this very same concept, and the very same bike. I remember it being the highlight of an otherwise boring game. It's nice when mods become big name games. I still wouldn't bother with it though.
Also, if anyone has Army of 2, I'm SabreXT on xbl. I'll be waiting. |

| Week in Gaming |
[May. 22nd, 2009|03:06 am] |
Finished Klonoa and then I decided to finally play through Lunatea's Veil since I could go through the story chronologically. Now I must say that while Klonoa 1 had some real gut wrenching scenes, and looked prettier, Klonoa 2 is the better game. It's longer, harder, makes better use of the 3D effect, and has a much more stylized feel to it, actually getting borderline creepy at moments.
I've also played a little Wario Land Shake It, but after playing Klonoa it just didn't feel that impressive, I could tell it was a solid platformer, but there just wasn't anything special about it. I'll probably end up returning it to GameFly and re-renting it next time I need a good platformer fix.
After putting Wario down I picked up Klonoa again and finished gathering the captives in each level to unlock Balue's Tower. I must say that if the main game got even half as difficult as this at any point, nobody could've claimed this game was too easy. I had to stop because it was inducing Nintendo Thumb, but I'll probably give it another try tomorrow.
I'm a little torn as to what game I should rent next. Part of me wants to pursue Killzone 2, but with The Conduit coming up I would like to avoid overdosing on FPSes. Infamous looks promising, but being a new release it'll probably be impossible to find. Perhapes I should finally consider picking up an RPG again now that I'd had a good chunk of time to try other genres.
In unrelated news, I'm very much looking forward to THIS, accessory. I've got plenty of N64 controllers laying around, and I would love to replay Ocarnia of Time using one of them. |

| DSiWare reviews |
[May. 21st, 2009|08:33 pm] |
| [ | Current Mood |
| | thoughtful | ] | Opera Web Browser
It's free, so there's no reason not to download it. I've been using it to check the NWS radar whenever there's a thunderstorm and my computer is turned off. It's much faster than the Opera browser for the DS Lite, though not quite as good as the Internet Channel on the Wii. Its biggest flaw is its lack of Flash support.
Animal Crossing Calculator
200 points. I've always thought the DS platform had the potential to do more than just games, now Nintendo has finally figured that out. This is a standard 5-function plus memory calculator that is vaugely Animal Crossing themed. It can also do (some) unit conversions, though it leaves out some obvious units like quarts or tablespoons. I also noticed it has a slight accuracy problem; if you divide 1 by 3, then multipy by 3, it gives an answer of 0.9999999999 rather than 1. Still, it's nice to have a calculator on hand when you need one, and it's only $2 (or free, since you get 1000 DSi Points when you buy a DSi)
Animal Crossing Clock
200 points. Nice try, Nintendo, but not quite. This app has the clock from Animal Crossing, superimposed on a miniturized town complete with tiny, barely recognizable City Folk characters. As the day progresses, the sky changes color and spaceships and balloons float across. You can set up to 3 alarms, using music from Animal Crossing as the alarm sound, and you can program your own "Town Tune" which sounds every hour, just like in the game. This sounds like a nice idea, but the DSi already has a clock and an alarm, so this is really just window dressing. You can have the display turn off after 5 minutes or 1 hour, which totally misses the point of having an Animal Crossing themed clock, or you can leave the display on and suck down the battery. If you're going to use this as an actual alarm clock, you'll want to leave it plugged in.
Clubhouse Games Express: Card Classics
500 points. I loved Clubhouse Games. It had tons of different card and board games and was a great way to waste time. This version has 5 of those games, Blackjack, Five Card Draw, President, Last Card and Last Card Plus (Crazy Eights). You can play against the computer or using DS Download Play, even against older DS and DS Lite units. You can also transfer one of the games to another DS for them to play against the computer. The computer is a pretty good opponent, even on Easy. Overall, this game is worth the money, unless you already have the full version. (I only bought it because I frequently carry just the DSi and a single game cart.) Japan has also seen the release of versions with board games and trump-style card games, these will likely reach the US in the coming weeks.
Dr. Mario Express
500 points. It's Nintendo's own version of Tetris. It's highly addictive and you can find that you've wasted a huge amount of time on this game. This is apparently a port of WiiWare's Dr. Mario Online Rx, only without the multiplayer. For some reason, the touch screen is not used at all, which is a bit confusing at first. But before you decide to purchase this, you should know that Brain Age Express includes "Virus Buster", a clone of Dr. Mario. If you're planning on buying that game, you might as well save the 500 points for this one.

| The life and times of a guitar hero pro |
[May. 19th, 2009|07:30 am] |
Got some interesting feedback on my GH rules post, so I thought I'd do a followup of sorts.
I personally count myself as a GH pro. I have no local friends who can keep up, and my scores consistently rank in the top 2k-5k of 1.2m. This is both a blessing and a curse. I enjoy playing the harder songs and can show off, but when it comes to co-op, I'm kinda out in the cold.
Regardless, I started posting around Score Hero mostly looking for an expert co-op partner, and ran into 2 things. 1) My "peers" on this site are all WAY above me (like 50 full combos (FC's) and top 10 ranks) 2) Guitar Hero guides are... interesting.
The second point is what really inspired me to write this. I went into the guides looking for some tips and tricks to get my raining blood five-star and thought I'd poke around a little more. All I was looking for is "Here's a trick for x section" and "deploy starpower here". I did manage to get that info, but these guides are ultra comprehensive. It's a little bit funny to see someone pay that attention to detail, trying to tell you when to strum or how to hold your hand. In video this would make sense, but in text it's very confusing.
I also was looking for an answer to my friends who are trying to take the med -> hard leap. The only answer I've ever had is practice, but generally people want better advice than that. I still remember every stumbling block up to where I am at. From the med->hard jump, psycho billy, double-strumming, raining blood... all of them. I still have stumbling blocks; more FC's, TTFAF, Jordan, Scratch boogie. I will continue to fail out until I devote the time to break the songs. So, to those of you who are stuck, sorry... more work is the only cure.
Well, that's not completely true... there are tips and tricks. Like Hammer-ons/Pull-offs (HOPO's), hyperspeed (makes it easier to read difficult passages), double-strumming, practice mode, proper star power usage, etc... but nothing I can write will help you master that orange button. Gotta train your brain.
I am interested to know what others did to defeat the orange button, because I know my only thing was forcing myself to play with it. ~Locke
EDIT: did a little bit more digging and found a decent guide [HERE]. Has a lot of "which song do I practice on?" answers. GH2 oriented. |

| Games for Windows LIVE Access Key |
[May. 17th, 2009|03:15 pm] |
I bought Fallout 3 today, and had a bit of an issue getting it up and running. I thought I would make a post here should any of you have the same problem somewhere down the line.
When I start the game, I couldn't start, claiming I had to be logged into Windows LIVE. I couldn't log into LIVE without the Access Key. I went around in circles a bit, checked the internet, didn't get much of use. After a bit of play I found the solution to the problem-
Start the game until the menu pops up.
Press home (the guide button) and try to log in, you will be told you need the access key.
After the message, sign out of LIVE (I know your not logged it, but sign out anyway).
Once signed out, sign in again and you will be asked for a LIVE key or a CD Key. Same difference. Type it in.
You will be asked to confirm your LIVE e-mail and password. Enter your LIVE details if they are not there automaticly. Click OK.
It will load a bit. Then you will be back on the guide. Close the guide (home key) and your ready to play.
My guess is it's an anti piracy messure, or it's tying a game to a certain account. Hope this helps you out should this happen to you. |

| Wind up to E3 |
[May. 17th, 2009|02:18 am] |
I don't know when E3 is, but with news and demos being marked or pre E3, I guess it's soon. Typical crap, a few goodies.
Brutal Legend large scale battles with have RTS elements. Given the game in an open world hack and slash, I think it will be more Dynasty Warriors or Giants then SupCom.
Also a new Mass Effect video is out. They claim the graphics and such are improved, but I couldn't see that on the tiny youtube vid. What looked cool was the improved combat that LOOKS more responcive and actiony. New heavy class of weapons that includes a nuclear something. It also showed the new enemys of the game who look fantastic. I hope they bring out toys of these guys. Think if the portal turrets were human, that's these dudes.
The problem. They are making the game "Darker and Edgier". If you haven't guessed, this is all the enviroments and concept art is grey. Oh dear.
Also, I found this funny http://www.game.co.uk/PC/Action/FirstPersonShooter/~r268800/Duke-Nukem-Forever/?s=duke%20nukem
also, while your at it, why not pre order the official DNF Stratagy guide? http://www.game.co.uk/PC/StrategyGuide/~r269500/Duke-Nukem-Forever-Official-Strategy-Guide-/?s=duke%20nukem I don't see the point of this. It can only end badly for them. |

| Fallout 1: Wasteland of Time |
[May. 15th, 2009|02:07 am] |
I'm really looking forward to playing Fallout 3, but I promised myself I'd finish Oblivion first and I want to wait for the GotY edition which will include the DLC. In the mean time, I bought the first 3 fallout games cheap.
If I had to sum up the game in one word, it would be overhyped. If I had to sum up the game in two words, it would be over hyped.
After a false start I got into the game proper, my goal was to go to vault 15 to collect a replacment water chip. I knew it wasn't going to be that simple as that would make for a rubish game. My first problem was finding a rope to get into the vault. A task made all the more weird by the fact that the NPCs didn't know what rope was. I eventually stumpled across some, and got well into stabbing rats. Whoopy.
After exterminating enough rodents to populate london, I made it to the bottom floor where... nothing. Some nice items, but that was it. Nothing. Nowt. Bugger all. After a while I deceded to consult the internet. It seems the room with the water chip was caved in, forcing you to explore the wasteland for another. Nothing wrong with that, except the game doesn't tell you this. Apparently you need high int and science for the game to tell you. I had 7 - 60 so I don't know what the game consider high int for a starting character.
After wandering around a bit, listening to people personal problems. I was given a mission to infiltrate a gang and bug their hideout or something. Again, no guidence on how to go about that. I somehow sold some items for £0 and eventually gave up. Another trip to the internet reveiled that I am ment to go to a zombie city and search the sewers.
...Bollocks! How am I ment to complete a game with no idea where to go. I can't just wander either as your on a tight time limit. Imagine if Oblivion had no map, quest markers, and you had a 40 game day time limit to find a the amulet of kings hidden somewhere, while all the NPCs talk about how many wolves are in the local hills.
I'm not a fan of adventure and sandboxes anyway, I prefer objectives to complete. However, when you need a guide to make any progress... This game drives me up the wall.
I want to like it, I really am giving it a huge chance. There's some great ideas, and the ending is known as one of the best in games history. If there's something I'm doing wrong, something vital I've missed then please let me know. |

| Duke Nukem Forever Canceled |
[May. 11th, 2009|11:18 pm] |
Duke Nukem Forever isn't going to be released. Who'd have thought? 13 years of toppng the vaporware charts and only now it officially canned.
Old news ect, but some interesting things have popped up media wise. Media is being put up and down like a yoyo, and all being archived by fans. The level design overview document and the animation videos are my favourites. Various games news sites have them, or at least links to them. Pick you poisen.
Despite this, I think someone will pick it up. They will be mad, but the duke nukem licence is to big to let lie. Maybe Bathesda will make a new one? :P
Do you think it's really gone, or been pushed back another 5 years again? |

| Klonoa follow-up |
[May. 9th, 2009|01:32 am] |
Alright, I just beat the game and although I just talked about it I want to throw out a quick follow up
Klonoa for the Nintendo Wii is probably one of the best games I've had the privilege to play in the past half decade! The level designs are fun and well thought out, the visuals, while not on par with something on the PS3 or 360 are immensely delightful and simply put a smile on my face, the music fits, the character designs are delightfully quirky and the story manages to do something that few games have managed and actually elicited an emotional response.
I want to proclaim that this game is perfect! I would like to, but I do have to take one step back from that position. The only complaint I have that I wouldn't consider a gripe is the fact that they dramatically increased Klonoa's health. Later in the game this is fine because the title becomes much harder, early on however the extra health makes Klonoa all but invincible. This doesn't ruin the game by any means, but I do believe this is the reason why some reviewers have deemed Klonoa too easy. Other than that, my only other complaint is simply that the script in this title sometimes feels like its glossing over plot points. You easily get the jist of what's happening and the emotional segments are still emotional, but they could've been clearer on the fact that this is a dreamworld, or what the motivation of the villain was. Regardless neither of these complaints do significant damage to the game, its a mere half step away from perfection and for thirty dollars its more than worth your money.
So my recommendation, buy this game, tell your friends to buy this game, heck buy a second copy if you have to. Not to be pushy or anything but Namco has officially stated that if Klonoa sales are good they'll do a remake of Lunatea's Veil and maybe even make the long dreamed of Klonoa 3. That's right, you heard me, Klonoa Three, the two words many of you probably never thought you'd have a chance to see on a DVD case!
So, yeah, don't make me come over there! I want my Klonoa 3 dagnabit!
*Edit*
Hopefully I'm not being too pushy here, but if anybody here whom has played the game would be willing to write a review for amazon.com I'd really appreciate it. So far I'm the only one that's written a review there and I know games with lots of reviews sale better.
and yes I know I wouldn't normally ask people to do this. I'm just a little excited over the prospect of a proper Klonoa sequel okay. |

| The GH Rules |
[May. 8th, 2009|09:29 pm] |
If you don't know, I am a Guitar Hero enthusiast. Currently working my way into the top 5% on my shiny new xbox. If you're curious: -Gamertag: LockeRaksha -GH community handle: Lockefox
You know the adage: "Be careful what you wish for"? Well, I wished for a way to go head-to-head against fellow guitar heroes and XBox live has granted my wish. The only problem is I should have been more specific. Playing online has proven to be a bigger headache than actual fun.
So, I present to you, the Guitar Hero rules:
1) If you haven't beat the song solo, don't pick it for face-off. You do not have some distinct advantage by picking something you think no one can play. May work 7:10 times, but trust me, it's really irritating to keep having to pwn the same people at Fire and Flames and Devil Went Down to Georgia when both parties are just button mashing.
2) For GHWT/GHM, if you can 99-100% your difficulty, you should be playing on a harder mode. Expert v. lower difficulty is weighted for accuracy. Since you have less notes to hit and easier passages, it gets really irritating to be on expert and be beaten by someone on easy.
3) Don't quit. For the love of god, stop quitting out of matches. Especially when you're being beaten on "your" song. It's hard enough to find matches, just stick through it (unless you're going for the silly achievements). If you're truly that bad, the victor doesn't really get that much as far as rating, so just get beaten and move on.
I am thinking I need to just retreat back into solo mode and play against the leaderboards... It's getting really irritating when you can only get 2 full matches per hour because of the above bs.
If we all just remember it's "just a game" and have fun, all parties might enjoy the experience more. ~Locke |
