I'm doing coyote totem bottle pendants again. Real raw coyote fur collected from live coyotes at the Indiana Coyote Rescue Center, stuffed into a glass bottle with a cork, and strung on a black leather cord with a real coyote tooth. Portion of proceeds from the sale of these goes to the coyotes at the center who donated their fur.
Here is one immediately available for purchase at my shop here.
I can take four more orders, for now. $9, price includes shipping. 1. 2. 3. 4.
I've also been making similarly-themed lynx claw pendants, and stuffing the bottles with fur from my hairy main coon, Merlin. Here is an example of one here. I can make two more of these, with or without bottle of cat fur. $10, price includes shipping.
1. 2.
Also, adding new things to my shop. I'm actually trying to sell off a lot of stuff before I leave the country in September for a month. I need to pay off a credit card bill, and some medical crap before then. I'm not afraid to haggle a bit, so feel free to poke me. And as always, portion of proceeds from sale of anything goes to wildlife charities.
Thanks for looking! |

| | Imogen Heap- Headlock | ] | Wolf tails-Is anyone selling one from a wolf that wasn't killed by a human? These are my favorite animals in the entire world and to have something from one would be lovely. The only thing...you'll have to accept snail mail. I'm 16 and can't get a paypal account. |

Just lettin' y'all know, as I've already told Shesta I'm in the market to buy Australian rabbit or Australian fox furs, preferably from trapping or hunting. Scraps, pelts, tails- whatever. So, if you happen across any and think you might feel like sellin', I'd be happy to take a looksie.
Thanks, guys! -Ariel |

Hi, I'm new to this community and I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on mounting a taxidermy bat. I acquired a vintage Indonesian bat a while ago and I still haven't gotten around to giving him a proper home. I have my shadowbox built and painted, so now the only part that is left is placing him inside of it.
I assume the way to go about this would be to cover the backing of the frame with batting and cloth and then pinning him to that. If so, would I stick the pin through his abdomen? Are there any precautions that I need to take to ensure that I don't ruin him?

| Looking for a few things! |
[Jul. 13th, 2009|07:00 pm] |
I was wondering if any of you could point me in a direction or two for some bits I'm trying to find (or at least judge the accessibility of.) Mostly small critters that aren't in short supply - squirrel skull/pelt, possum skull, turtle (snapping turtle claws to be specific; my usual guys are out of them - or heck even turtle shells), corvid and raptor skull and/or preserved wings/feet, snake skeletons, and the strangely elusive run-of-the-mill cat skull/claws.
All are for craft purposes so I'm not looking for high quality here... anyone know where I can find any of these? |

| Preserving Specimens |
[Jul. 13th, 2009|03:41 pm] |

| | curious | ] | I recently got some ooooollld museum specimens in jars (half a possum, a sugar glider and a bat) they aren't fully covered in whatever liquid they are in anymore. I have no idea if its formalin or something else they've been put in.
Any idea if its safe to switch them from whatever they are in to metholated spirits? Is there even a way of telling what they are in?
I can get pictures if that helps, but the liquid looks slightly yellowish brown, but that could be age or something that the specimens have leaked xD had a rat in metho turn the metho yellow once.
Also, what is best for preserving specimens in jars? or are formalin and metho about the same? |

| Working on a Cabinet of Curiosities. |
[Jul. 11th, 2009|11:20 pm] |
I'm working on making my own "Victorian Curiosity Cabinet". I have a decent collection of jaw bones and N American specimens that belonged to relatives, or I collected myself as a child. I've always had a love affair with Natural History so I'm eager to put my treasures on display again. . I had a full blown nature center in my bedroom as a kid. I taught myself basic taxidermy from reading old books. I did tan a deer hide and a squirrel in 8th grade. :) The deer hide ended up being much smaller and harder that how began :) heh
Here's what I've got so far: ( under here... )

| My boyfriend officially thinks I'm weird. |
[Jul. 6th, 2009|02:31 am] |
I was on my way to drop him off after a movie tonight when I see a baby deer, dead in the road! After the immediate "awwww poor thing" reaction, I just started moping and lamenting. When he finally asked what my problem was, I just whined "IF ONLY I HAD A PLACE TO PUT IT!"
I've lurked in this community for a very long time and I looooove the work you guys do. I've wanted to get into cleaning bones and tanning hides for several years now, and have made a point to read every tutorial I see posted. (and whatever else I find!)
So, here's a question. Are any of you in a situation where you don't have any real place to put your finds as you clean them via maceration or buggies or whatever? What kinds of options do I have? Is it legal to stash things somewhere on property that isn't necessarily yours? Not like, on someone's private property, but say scooting said roadkill within the treeline and securing it as it is cleaned by nature? I can get away with doing the quick dirty work where I live, but the problem is the long-term cleaning. Boiling isn't an option at the moment either. Any tips would be appreciated. I'm really ready to start creating things! |
