Book of the Dead Vol. 4
It's Book of the Dead time! What is the Book of the Dead? Does it summon demons from Bruce Cambell's nightmares? Well it might... Injured Fur Still Needs Help!!! (Update) ***TAMA STILL NEEDS OUR HELP, SO PLEASE READ THIS & GIVE WHATEVER YOU CAN***It’s been a week and a half since Tama (real name: Matt) was in a serious car accident, and I wanted to keep everyone updated on how he’s doing, and the state of his financial situation. We took Tama to the Orthopedic Surgeon on Friday and they X-rayed his ankle again. The fracture to the talus bone is healing well, and the position of the bone improved enough so he will NOT have to have surgery (*sigh of relief*). His ligaments are torn, and he’s in a lot of pain, but his body IS healing. He just needs more care and time. They put him in an inflatable cast, and refilled his pain meds. He’s going back next week for a CAT SCAN and follow-up visit. His treatment is ongoing, and the status of his financial aid and potential insurance coverage is pending, so we still don’t know how much he’ll owe for his medical bills. For those not familiar with what happened and the people involved…Tama/Matt is 20 years old, and was trapped in an abusive home. His friends in the Northeast had just helped him escape that place, and he was about to move into his new home when he was in a horrible car accident. His right-side tires dropped off a steep edge in the pavement and pulled the car down a hill where he hit a utility pole head-on. The pole was imbedded half way up the hood, and his car was totaled. The fireman, police, and EMTs say he’s lucky to be alive. He sustained a broken ankle (talus bone) and torn ligaments, and is facing a 6-week recovery time. Before he moved, he was working a minimum wage job and living paycheck-to-paycheck, so he came out here with next to nothing, and now he’s lost it all. He needs help getting back on his feet so he doesn’t have to return to the abusive place he had just escaped. My mate and I are the founders and Con Chairs for FurFright ( www.furfright.org). We’ve been working to raise money for the convention’s charities for 7 years, and have donated time and money to charities personally for over 20 years. At the moment we’re caring for Tama/Matt at our home (his injuries have him unable to walk or care for himself), and we’re doing all we can to get him treatment and take care of his needs, but we’re in debt ourselves and have no further resources. To see him through this difficult time, we’ve started “ The Tama Guardian Fund”. All donations will go towards the bills he’s incurred. Breakdown of current expenses: -- Medical Bills, Doctor Visits, & Medication: He’s applied for aid from the hospital and state, and we’re looking into whether his accident was covered under his mother’s insurance. Both inquiries are pending, so we still don’t know how much his total medical bill will be. -- Property Damage: His car insurance had lapsed at the time of the accident. The pole he hit had to be replaced, and according to the Police and AT&T, he’s responsible for paying for it. Again, there is a chance that he could still be covered under his mother’s policy, and we’re waiting to hear back about the claim. -- Towing/Storage/Ticket Costs: His car had to be hauled from the scene, stored at a local garage, and towed to a salvage yard. $334 had to be paid before the garage would release the car to the salvage yard, so I loaned Matt the money for this as any delay would result in more storage fees. A $103 ticket for the accident also had to be paid. The total for both of these is $437. -- Living Costs/Bills: In addition to his monthly bills, he needs help with food/beverages, necessities, and transportation costs to/from doctor visits. I’ve been preparing his meals with whatever I have available (this big ol’ bear is a great cook, so the kid ain’t starving! *smiles*), and stretching things as far as I can to save money. -- Cheap Car: After he gets on his feet, he’ll need a form of transportation to get to/from his job. Any money leftover from the above expenses would go towards the cost of the car, registration fees, taxes, and the initial insurance payment. PLEASE help by making a donation. Any/all amounts are welcomed. We've got a big mountain to climb, so please give as much as you can. Every penny is vital. Tama, K’gra, and I would like to thank everyone who’ve donated, sent positive thoughts, prayed, reposted the call for help, and sent kind wishes of any kind. Your response and generosity has been truly overwhelming. We understand that not everyone has the means to donate funds, but rest assured your love and support are every bit as needed, valued, and appreciated. You’ve proven once again, beyond doubt, that the people of this community have a capacity for kindness and generosity that is unmatched. Magic The Gathering?
Do any of you other con-goers play Magic the Gathering? I just recently got back into it, and would love to play a few pick up games this year! Is there some kind of event for it already set up? Do people just hang around in the board gaming room and just get some matches going? Does someone run a tourney of some kind? Is there a way to identify fellow Plains Walkers, in search of a duel? I'm not a strict tourney sort of player, so any decks 60+ cards is good with me, and just so long as everyone sticks to the basic rules, I'm happy as a clam! Oh and I'd rather not play with unglued cards, since it's not really the same game. ^^;; Right now I have a white angel deck[mostly angels anyways]. It's pretty good but it definitely could use some tweaking, and I'm just starting to make a red/green deck. I could also bring my cards to trade if anyone's into that, but if not I'd rather not lug them around. | | Wednesday, June 17th, 2009 | 1:14 am [k_moondragon] |
I found this community on the openpaws community. I saw the recent post here and feel so bad for the guy. I would love to help but can't because of bills of my own. I was wondering if there were someplace we could send get well cards to the guy. Maybe an address at the hospital. I do alot of crafting and would love to send something to him to let him know hes in our hearts. | | Monday, June 15th, 2009 | 6:25 pm [bearknight]

Furry Hurt In Car Accident! ***PLEASE HELP!!!***
PLEASE… I would never ask for this kind of help unless it was a dire emergency... A member of our Furry Family has been hurt and needs our help. His name is Tama/Matt, he's 20 years old, and he’s a wonderful, kindhearted person. He’s been one of my best friends and like a son to me for years. He was trapped in an abusive home and had been struggling to survive and escape. We had just got him out of that place and helped him move out East, and he was about to start a new life and job when he was in a horrible car accident. He slid off the road and hit a telephone pole head on. I raced to the accident scene and saw the pole imbedded half way up the hood. They put him in the ambulance, immobilized with a backboard and neck brace, with his leg in a splint. Because of the severity of the accident, they rushed him to the Trauma Center at Yale New Haven Hospital. He’s lucky to have escaped with just a broken ankle and dislocated ligament. The fireman, police, and EMTs say he’s lucky to be alive. He’s in a new, strange place, away from everything he’s ever known. He came out here with next to nothing, and now he’s lost it all. The pain and fear in his eyes and voice tore my heart out as I held his paw in the ambulance, and while they worked on him in the hospital. He’s terrified that this has cost him his chance at a healthy, happy life . . . and that he’ll have to return to that abusive place. Please. We can’t let that happen. He was living paycheck to paycheck, and moved without a penny to his name. He has no health insurance. His car was totaled and wasn’t insured at the time of the accident (he was under a lot of stress before/during the move and forgot to make the payment). And now he’s laid up in bed with a broken ankle/dislocated ligament, unable to work and with no form of transportation to get to and from a job. To get him through this we’ve started the Tama Guardian FundAll proceeds will go to pay for his: -- Medical Bills, Doctor Visits, & Medication (he has no health insurance, and we’re looking into getting aid from the state and hospital to help with this. He also has to see a Orthopedic Surgeon throughout his recovery) -- Property Damage (his car insurance had lapsed and he was not insured at the time of the accident. The pole he hit had to be replaced, and according to the Police and AT&T, he’s responsible for paying for it. This is going to be a HUGE expense.) -- Towing/Storage Costs (his car had to be hauled from the scene, stored at a local garage, and towed to a salvage yard) -- Living Costs (the doctors say he’ll need about 6 weeks to recover, and he’ll need help with bills and food until he can get back on his feet) -- Cheap Car (he needs a form of transportation to get to/from his job. Any money leftover from the above expenses would go towards cost of the car, registration fees, taxes, and insurance.) My mate and I are caring for Tama/Matt at the moment. He’s staying with us, and we’re doing all we can to get him treatment and mend his wounds, but we’re in debt ourselves and have nothing left to give. PLEASE help Tama by making a donation. Any/all amounts are welcomed ($5, $10, $25, $50, $100 or more). We've got a big mountain to climb, so give as much as you can. Every penny is vital. And please, spread the word to everyone you know. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned about Furries in my 9 years in this fandom it’s . . . we always take care of our own. For those who aren’t familiar with me or this cause, I’m the Con Chair for FurFright (www.furfright.org) and have been working to raise money for charities for 7 years through the convention, and 20+ years personally). Aside from the charities we support through FurFright, I’ve NEVER asked the community for money or donations for ANY reason, and I wouldn’t now if the injured person had any other recourse. I’m not pushing commissions, I’m not asking for money to go to a con, I’m not trying to raise money for a website… We’re trying to help a fellow human being in his time of need. Nothing more. I’ll supply as much information as I can (some details are sensitive, and it’s up to Tama/Matt if he wants to make it public). I’ll take photos and provide updates as often as I can so you can see how your donations are being used. Please know that kind, loving thoughts and words are just a valuable as donations. Room needed for 2, Will PAY! Want extra con spending money?!
Finally just got word that I have the time off. I'm looking to get a room at the main hotel for myself and my mate. If you have room for 2 friendly furries email me or get me on aim asap. As I was expecting to just get a room myself I will offer most of the room cost from me. Great way for you to save money to spend at the con. I am looking for someone with a Fri night, Sat night, and possibly a Sunday night. That's just about $350 for the cost of the room, I am offering a minimum of $200 toward the cost of the room if you can supply a space for myself and my mate. 1 of us is a fursuiter but room placement won't matter, but it would help. So, if anyone has 2 spots free and wants $200 plus to the cost of their room contact me. Question about convention hotel rates
I've been meaning to post about this for a little while now, but only just now was reminded to, so I hope I haven't waited too long to get this situation worked out. A while back, I reserved a room at the main hotel for Furfright at the convention rate. So far so good, right? Well, later on I realized that some of my friends (and friends of friends) might need crash space too, so just to be safe, I went and booked another room under my name as well. Now, this was only a couple of weeks ago, so it was after the convention block had already sold out. So now I have one room going at the con rate and one at the regular rate. What I was wondering is if it wouldn't be possible to switch the second room to the convention rate as well. If not, I may have to let it go. I understand if it's not possible, but I wanted to at least try. Thanks in advance to anyone who can give me any assistance on this! | | Friday, May 22nd, 2009 | 1:19 pm [chanobear]

Roomshare? Also offering rideshare.
Howdy. I sorta dropped the ball on getting a room for this year's Furfright, so I'm gonna have to ask if anyone's willing to take in a clean, well-mannered, polite bear ideally from thursday evening through monday morning. I'll obviously pay my share though I'd like to ask for bedspace. Also, driving down from Montreal, I know I'll be driving through Vermont, Massachusetts and Connecticut so if anyone needs a lift, I'll be happy to discuss. Warmest regards! Room block expanded! Overflow room block set up!
The room block for the MAIN FurFright hotel has been expanded. We only have 25 more rooms left for Friday and Saturday nights. Also I have set up the room block at the overflow hotel -- the Holiday Inn Express. The room rate is $99 and they give you free breakfast (continental, I'm sure--that's coffee/tea and pastries/muffins usually). The overflow hotel is located just 4 1/2 miles from the main FurFright hotel. Cumbersome, yes, we know. *grins* Also, be sure to double-check the address of the hotel you're booking. The MAIN hotel is on East Main. The OVERFLOW hotel is on Union Street. The hotel/travel page will be updated with this info soon, as well as info on how the car-less travelers can get from one hotel to the other using the Waterbury bus system. Looking for a ride.
I was sort of looking into my transportation for furfright this year and found out I'm in a bit of trouble. Last year a generous friend was kind enough to give me a ride since he was coming from Michigan and was cutting through Toronto. I live in Niagara Falls, NY. Unfortunately said friend has other plans this year. So I was thinking I could use the greyhound only to find out it'd cost me $200 round trip. If by chance you're trying to remember who I am you more then likely would've seen me in the game room. I won 1st in the Super Smash Brothers Melee (was supposed to be brawl but that didn't work out.) I also had volunteered and watched the game overnight on Friday. I did a bit of recording here and there. I was the one holding the camera recording Tilt's group when we went to D's Owl Cafe. Needless to say I had a blast and would love to go again. So if anyone has any suggestions or a way of helping me get a ride it'd be greatly appreciated. >.<;;; | | Thursday, April 9th, 2009 | 12:27 pm [silvermane3]

Headless Lounge
It's baaaaack! Yes the Furfright Headless Lounge! For those of you who helped me out last year, thanks again! :) However it is 2009, a new year, and well I will need help to run the Headless Lounge, so if you'd like to work it let me know! The lounge could really use help during the fursuit parades (mostly after they are over), dances, fursuit panels, and masquerade. All that is required is keeping the room nice, clean, and making sure that no fursuiter goes unhydrated. Can't have fursuiters passing out in the hallways now can we? *grins* Also looking for any improvements fursuiters would like to see in the lounge. No we can't build a whole new larger room, sorry. :) Any other suggestions though are welcomed! :)Thanks and see you in October! Silvermane | | Tuesday, April 7th, 2009 | 1:48 pm [kgraleopard]

animal charities
We are looking for suggestions for animal-based charities we can support at the con this year. In particular, we are looking for a group who could come to the hotel to put on a presentation, preferably with live animals (but that's not mandatory). If you know of a worthy organization (they must be a registered non-profit) you would like to see us support, please let us know! (Also provide any contact info or webpage URL, if possible) *hugs* |
