From the Daily Mirror:

His head may have been in Madrid but his heart was already in Liverpool.
Even though Fernando Torres didn’t actually realise it, his fate was already sealed.
A flick of the arm, a fleeting connection with a defender jostling for the ball and the ripped skipper’s armband revealed his destiny.

The words were clear: ‘We’ll Never Walk Alone’ )

Also, from the Daily Mirror:

Three times his mobile phone rang with an English number. Three times he ignored it.

Eventually curiosity got the better of Fernando Torres and he returned the call. There was no answer. He jested to his wife Olalla: ‘That’ll be Benitez wanting to sign me!’

How right he was. )

And, one more excerpt from The Mirror. A bit of Stevie love from Our Kid.

Fernando Torres hailed Steven Gerrard the ‘greatest player in the world’ and insists: Liverpool would be lost without him.
He believes their inspirational skipper is ‘irreplaceable’ and has vowed to help land him a long overdue first ever Premiership winners medal - and the World Player of the Year Award.
Torres insists Gerrard is the heartbeat of the club and the key factor behind their European and domestic ambitions.

He said: “He is without doubt the greatest player I have ever played with. He has everything.

At Liverpool, he is irreplaceable. )

From the Daily Mirror:

"You can only ever be a legend in someone’s mind. So long as you never become a legend in your own, there’s no problem. People want to pigeon-hole you, Fernando: they want to label you, rank you, judge you and compare you to others. But all that really matters is that you are yourself."

Those were the words uttered to Fernando Torres just a few days after he had become Liverpool’s record signing. His new mentor? The King of the Kop; Kenny Dalglish.

And a bit extra from The Kid's official site. (Interesting that this part isn't included on the Mirror link, since, without it, the articles are exactly the same.)

- Hillsborough service

"I could hardly believe what I was seeing. The stadium was almost full. The Kop was packed.”

"The reception we got at Anfield gave me goose bumps. All of our fans stood and gave us an ovation that seemed to go on for ages. The memorial for those who lost their lives sent a shiver through me. It was a tragedy provoked by negligence and one for which there still hasn't been an explanation.”

"The families of the dead are still demanding justice. For many the tears are still tears of anger.”

"The unity between players and fans comes in part from having that terrible experience together.”

"Whenever there is a minute's silence in England's football stadiums it is impeccably observed. It is a minute that goes straight to the heart. A tear puncturing the silence. Can you imagine the Atletico Madrid anthem being listened to in Real Madrid's stadium? There were Everton fans at Anfield on that anniversary day who listened in respectful silence. It could only happen in England.”

"If there is one thing that has really stood out for me since I've been in England, it's the huge human tide of Liverpool fans. Every player dreams of fans like that. Here at Anfield we've got them."

Penny Lane must have seemed a million miles away from Madrid to the young Spanish schoolboy.
So too, the ‘Yellow Submarine’ that Fernando Torres sang about with his brother as they recited Beatles hits passed down from their father Jose.
Indeed, ‘El Nino’, would not even have known who the Fab Four were given his tender years or what it was they were singing about. But he loved their tunes all the same. And that was all that mattered.

Had anyone told him just how intricately linked he would ultimately become with Liverpool’s most famous sons and he would have laughed it off as madness. Liverpool? He’d never even heard of it. Yet the city was to become his second home. His future. The platform for his footballing dreams and the Beatles back catalogue was to become his Bible.

He said: “One of the biggest problems I faced when I first moved to Liverpool was the language barrier. My English was limited to the classes I had taken at school in Fuenlabrada. You think you know a bit of English and that you can get by but when you actually arrive in England you soon realise that you haven’t really got a clue.

With a date like this, the day is just made for a Torres celebration, don't you think? So, with that in mind, I have a present for everyone here - an old magazine scan! :p

FourFourTwo - January 2008

And, just in case you need a reason to love our Kid, here he is, once again, stating his love for Liverpool.

Torres: Why I'm Loving Liverpool Life

Fernando Torres has spoken of his love for the city of Liverpool and thanked the supporters for making him feel at home.

El Nino, who is away with Spain this week bidding to secure World Cup qualification, has become the darling of the Kop since his arrival two years ago - and he insists the respect works both ways.

"The people are so nice and polite here, and have a lot of respect for players when you are away from the pitch," he said.

"That is one of the main things for me. In Spain it was difficult for me to go to restaurants or just walk in the street with my friends.

"Now I can do these things and go to the park, walk my dogs and go out for dinner.

"It's a really working class city and I like that because I was born in a working class part of Spain.

"The people work all week and they go to the ground each weekend to enjoy the team. On the Monday they are working hard again just so they can see their team on the weekend.

"It's really special to see supporters with my name on their shirt. I can understand why they would wear a Stevie G or Carra shirt because they are from Liverpool.

"I only came here two years ago as a foreign player but they love me like Stevie or Carra. That's amazing and I have to say thank you to them for that."

So, if anyone would like to add something to this post, feel free. Your favorite moment, picture, whatever.

Oh, and quick question: would anyone like a copy of The Story of Fernando Torres? I have no idea who produced it, but it's a video in three parts.

The 25-year-old has scored an incredible 50 goals in 85 games during his two seasons at Anfield, helping to earn a Ballon d'Or nomination in 2008. He is also a talisman for Spain, for whom he netted the winner in Euro 2008. Despite all this, Torres believes there are plenty of areas where he can improve.

"I'm very proud because when I came from Atletico I just wanted to play some games and see if I could play in a top team like Liverpool," the No.9 told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"Now two years later I think I am improving a lot, and I think I can improve a lot yet. I am still young, just 25."

Torres put pen to paper on an improved deal last week.

Despite being tied to Anfield until 2013, with the option of an extra year on top of that, the Spaniard hopes he hasn't signed his last contract with Liverpool.

He said: "I'm really happy. I hope I have a lot of seasons to play here.

"I'm happy because I went right from Atletico, I had never played in the Champions League before, and Liverpool gave me the opportunity to play against the best teams in the world.

"I am really happy to sign a new contract with Liverpool and I hope I can sign more contracts in the future here.

"I feel good because the fans are fantastic with me. Every week it is amazing to see all the fans singing my name and my song. I am very proud to play for Liverpool.

"It is one of the most important clubs in Europe; the club with the best fans in the world, I am sure about that; and one of the clubs with the most history in modern football."

Meanwhile, Torres admits Liverpool must fly out of the blocks against a stubborn Stoke side on Wednesday if they are to kickstart their Barclays Premier League campaign.

Tony Pulis's men held the Reds to two frustrating draws last term - but a point will not satisfy Torres and co this time round following Sunday's opening day reversal at White Hart Lane.

"We know them, we know last season we played against them and it was really difficult," said El Nino.

"We couldn't win against them, so we are waiting for a very defensive team. They will try to score from set pieces or from a long ball, but we have to be offensive and go from the first minute until the end to try to score. And if we can score in the first minute I am sure we can win.

"The best thing when you lose is having a game three days later because we have the chance to forget about Tottenham.

"It is disappointing when you cannot win, but I think we have to improve, we have to be positive. We can get three points and we are on our way."
