A few words of clarification from the moderators:

What ftmen is:

This is a community for people who were female born/assigned/raised but who now live as men. This community is only for those who were female born/raised who now identify as male and have pursued or are actively pursuing steps to solidify that identity either socially, physically or both. Our purpose is to serve as a space for men who are beyond the initial stages of transition. To clarify: typically, guys in ftmen are several years into medical transition, and have been living full-time for at least 3-4 years. The majority of our members have been on T for over two years and have had surgery (either top, bottom or both). Obviously there will be some folks at different places, and this is just to give a basic idea of who we are. A general benchmark might be at least a year on T (for guys who plan on medically transitioning), and having lived as male for at least 2.5 years.
In this instance, we define "living as male" as being at a point at which 'disclosing' means "telling someone you were born/assigned female," rather than "telling someone you are male."
As the moderators, we don't say all this to place a value judgment on other guys' experiences – and [IMPORTANT] No-Ho/Non-Op guys (not the same thing as pre-T) who have been living full-time as men for years, choosing not to pursue hormones and/or surgery, certainly have a place in ftmen - the point is that the issues that guys face several years into transition are often different from the issues faced by guys who are recently socially transitioned or newly/not yet on T, and while we value all experiences, it's important to keep a space primarily focused on a later-in-transition perspective. Of course "beyond the initial stages of transition" is a subjective phrase, and it's difficult because there's certainly no way to standardize criteria regarding other people's personal journeys, but in the interest of creating/maintaining a space for later-in-transition guys we do urge you to consider who/what we are here for before you apply to join.

What ftmen is NOT:

Most folks would surely agree that there should be a space where transitioned guys and guys who are pre-transition can have an exchange. However, that is not what this group is for. We also do not serve or represent a larger transgender spectrum beyond those who live full-time as men.. This community does not intend to make any judgments about people who don't fit within this model, and acknowledges and appreciates the nuances that exist within all genders, and we do not require that members be gender normative, but it is not the right space for people who fluctuate between male and female identities. Men of all sexual orientations are welcomed. This community is not open to SOFFAs. There are a number of lj communities that are, however, such as

partners_of_tg.

A word about the criteria for this community – as was earlier stated, if you are requesting join, we ask that you email the moderator account (ftomen@gmail.com) with your answers to the 5-question survey below. This is not the same thing as defining “what it means to be trans” – this merely defines the requirements for being a member of ftmen. No one is asking that anyone prove their transness - just prove that they meet the criteria we are setting up.

All posts to ftmen must be made friends-only, or the moderator will delete them immediately without notice. You should feel free to repost these entries friends-only if they have been deleted

Your must be over 16 to join this community.

Cross-posting is not allowed. If you are planning on posting the same or similar items in multiple ftm-related communities at one time, rather than include ftmen in your crosspost, you should either make sure that the version that appears here is non-generic, specifically directed at this community, and addresses the particular issues for which this community was created (a post- or later-transition angle) or post the item in this community later on, only if responses in others (such as ftm) have not proved helpful. A general rule of thumb should be that if the post is something that you could/would cross-post verbatim to

ftm or another more general ftm community, then it is probably not something appropriate to this community.

Directly copying posts or comments made by others in this community and pasting them outside of the community is completely unacceptable and will result in immediate and permanent removal from this community. Quoting or paraphrasing posts or comments from the community in your own journal is also unacceptable. This community is closed for a reason. What happens here stays here. If you violate this policy, you will be removed. There is a "one strike, you're out" policy for this.

If you are disrespectful to others, you will be removed from this community. Examples of disrespect to other members include name-calling, public mockery, threats, etc.

If it becomes clear that you don't live full-time as male, you will be removed from this community.

Do not speak for others. Use "I" statements whenever possible.

Introductions are mandatory. Feel free to lurk once you've made your introduction - the intro isn't to "prove" that you belong, but rather to let other guys know who is in this community and who is reading their posts and comments.

Any photos must be placed behind an lj-cut. If the photos are not work safe, let us know before we click on them.

Application for Membership:

When applying to the community, please email the moderators (ftomen@gmail.com) with your answers to the following questions, preferably with more than just a "yes" or "no" with regards to 3, 4, and 5:

1. What is your LJ username? (this will help reference an earlier request)
2. Were you born and/or raised female?
3. Do you live and identify as male full-time? If yes, how long have you done so?
4. Have you taken measures to transition socially or do you plan to? Please explain.
5. Have you taken measures to transition physically or do you plan to? Please explain.

It is important that membership be moderated and only those who live and identify full-time as male be approved as members. This keeps the space safe, specific, and running smoothly. It isn't easy to determine who to approve and who to decline--when the moderators are unsure, they err on the side of caution and decline. As noted in the community user info, moderators are happy to receive emails from people who think their request to join has been declined in error. Please note that hostile emails will only result in a permanent decision to decline your request for membership. If you cannot be mature and respectful in an email to the moderators, you are unlikely to be respectful to others in this community.
