Click here to read 4 new pages!

There would have been more pages this week, but we took the liberty to prioritize the lovely weather and the company of some other comic artists (the adorable Styggelse and awesome Karrey to be precise - check them out!). Hopefully you'll forgive us. ;)

Oh, and for those who are new - don't forget about our Facebook page. :)

Five new pages are up, 358-362! Click here to read them.

Thanks so much, everybody, for your replies to last week's post! It was an interesting read and we now have a lot of links to go through. :)

3 things [Jun. 14th, 2009|11:57 pm]

fluffpudel
[Feeling | working]

1) Four new pages of What Birds Know are up! Click here to read them.

2) We'd like to get a better idea of who's reading our comic, if possible. :) Why don't you introduce yourself in the comments section? You don't have to write a lot if you don't want to - just age, location and other comics (online and/or printed) that you enjoy will do. :) You don't need to have your own LJ to comment! Just drop a few lines if you feel like it. We're curious!

3) Forgot to post this last week or if it was the week before: when little Elia and her mother are having tea with the fancy ladies, Elia is seen playing with a poodle. This is actually an homage (okay, "homage"... totally not the right word but...) to a panel in the the Selma Lagerlöf comic, where the main character acts as a vet for a poor sick poodle. Fun fact of the day!

Click here to see a comparison! )

It also amused Emelie that she got to name a Photoshop layer "Fluffpudel" twice in a lifetime. ^__^

Update + print! [Jun. 8th, 2009|12:26 am]

fluffpudel
[Feeling | accomplished]

Click here for 5 new pages, 349-353! Yay for crossing the 350 line! :D (Ian: "What is it with women and tea?? Isn't it obvious that I'm a coffee person?")

As you may notice, the first page of this update is the last page of the scene where we left off last week. Since we didn't manage to update with 5 pages last week we've gotten a little out of sync with the scenes vs the updates. And this week it's the same thing - there's supposed to be one more page of the camp fire scene, but we didn't manage to finish it on time so it will be up next week instead. :P Hopefully this will correct itself eventually. Not that it really matters, but I guess it's practical to read a whole scene at once.

Oh, and the Selma comic has been published now! It can be bought directly from us for 90 SEK + shipping within the country. (For some reason we doubt anyone outside Sweden will be interested, but if you happen to be... contact us on fribergthorelli at gmail dot com for details! :))

Pages 339-344 are now up, and man, page 344 has one of the creepiest pictures I've ever drawn. Anyone want to snuggle with that guy, say "I"! *shiver*

6 new pages of What Birds Know are up! Click here to read them. Enjoy mr Hofflam, because this is the last you'll see of him.

Oh, and we forgot to mention it last time - we're now on Facebook too, and - if we've understood how it works, which is highly dubious - you could join that group and get a message every time we update. Ah, the wonders of technology. ^__^

On another note, we got the test printout of the Selma album in our hands this Friday. Now just for some final touches and then... we're official dead-tree comickers! Yay.

It's May now... [May. 10th, 2009|11:23 pm]

...and as promised, we're BACK!

Our commission has now been finished (final product will be available in mid-May, probably) and we can finally get back to What Birds Know. Again, we're sorry that we've kept you waiting, but from now on (at least until the next distraction comes our way... *cough*) we hope we'll be able to update regularly again. Yay! :D

Here you go, five new pages. Cleavage is included.

Since it's been a while since the last update...

Previously on WBK: The girls got into an argument, Dores' feelings were hurt and we found out about her childhood and how she'd always been unfairly compared to her brother. After the fight the girls made up again... at least for a while. Ian and his two buddies went to the tavern so that Ian could get his prize for winning the bet earlier, and there Ian got an offer he couldn't refuse, but it all became very awkward when the lady he tried to buy for the night turned out to be Elia's mother. Then we met three little girls who had the same nightmare. Outside their window was the old castle in a non-ruin state. Huh.

Selma [Mar. 22nd, 2009|08:21 pm]

[Feeling | stressed]

Just thought I'd pop in to show you some pictures from the Selma project to give you an idea of what it will be like. It will be out in Sweden in May, but it's possible that it will be translated into English in the future because that's happened with a few of the other comics Kulturpoolen has produced, so we're crossing our fingers for that. :)

Here's what will be the cover for the comic:

Photobucket

Selma Lagerlöf (1858-1940) is one of Sweden's most famous writers. She was the first female writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature (1909), and is most widely known for her children's book Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige (The Wonderful Adventures of Nils).

In this comic album we follow a 49-year old Selma as she tells her niece and nephew a story about a sick, hunchbacked girl named Meli. The girl finds the will to live when she realizes she's a natural when it comes to healing injured animals.

Book Three [Feb. 27th, 2009|05:41 pm]

quasilie
[Feeling | stressed]

Hello everyone.

We're sorry that we've seemed to have dropped off the face of the planet! We never meant for it to take this long between updates. O_o We have not given up on What Birds Know, and we still have every intention of finishing it, so rest assured: the comic has just been on hiatus, but although an update comes with this post, sadly the comic will continue to be on hiatus for a while longer.

The situation is this: We're struggling to promote ourselves as professional comic artists here in Sweden, both by trying to get What Birds Know published (in Sweden, to begin with), and by making a name of ourselves by taking on commissions, participating in contests etc. This has taken up a lot of our time, and although it will be beneficial to us in the long run, WBK has suffered for it these last months.

Right now we're working on a 40-page comic about Swedish writer and Nobel prize laureate Selma Lagerlöf, commissioned by Kulturpoolen. It's going to be published, so that's great for us, but it's a lot of hard work. We try to squeeze in WBK on our schedule whenever we can, but it's very tight, and since we don't think WBK would benefit from updating with only one page at a time, we decided not to update at all until we have more completed pages.

We're sorry we haven't made an announcement about this sooner. We're very stressed out, and that's about the only excuse we have. We hope you can forgive us, and that you will find the rest of the comic worth the wait. :)

However, both of the times we have put WBK on a long hold, it has been at the end of a "volume" (if the comic had been in printed form). Just see it as the wait before the next volume comes out, of for that matter, the wait between seasons of your favorite TV show... ;P (Sooner or later, the volumes will also be reflected in the comic archive. This update marks the beginning of what will be volume 3. All in all, we aim for four volumes.)

Please have patience and bear with us. We will start updating WBK regularly again in May or sooner. Hope to see you then! :)

Love,
Emelie & Mattias

...

...with that said:

OMGWTFLOLBBQ!! 11 new pages (the beginning of volume 3) are up!

And 6 new pages of the new beginning!
The time of miracles, apparently, has not yet passed. Enjoy!

Four new pages of the new beginning have been uploaded. I wonder if page 11 sets some kind of record for how many speech bubbles we can cram into one panel. XD

And what do you know, it's November 30th. That means What Birds Know turns three years old today! Hooray! :D

[Feeling | accomplished]

Five new pages are up! Click here to read 312-316!* (Then say it with me: AWKWARD.)

And that, my friends, is where we have to leave you hanging for a short while, as we focus on finishing the redrawing and touching up of the first ~30 pages of the comic. We also have to do some severe thumbnailing of future scenes since the story has crossed the half-way-through line by now (...we think, anyway). We can't promise how long this will take, but since we've already fixed 10 of those pages, it shouldn't take forever.

We'll keep posting the pages of the new beginning as we make them, though. :)

Update [Oct. 30th, 2008|01:02 pm]

quasilie
[Feeling | working]

11 new pages of What Birds Know have been updated!

-5 of them are from the new beginning which can be viewed HERE.

-The other 6 continue the story HERE. If you're thinking, after reading them: "But... that's not at all what she looks or acts like at the beginning of the comic! How does this make any sense?" then you're absolutely right to do so. :) You will get to know more about her character, but not for another 100 pages or so. Next up: Ian and the bros at the tavern.
_______________

The plan here is that we will take you to a place within the next ~10 pages where there will be some kind of "cliffhanger". Then we must unfortunately leave you hanging there for a short while, because we're forced to work full-time on redrawing the beginning. Yeah, yeah, we know, we know... but it's required of us because of the class that we're taking. It's going to be easier to catch a publisher's interest if the first 30 pages don't look like ¤#%§%¤#. :) We're hoping you'll hang in there as we plough our way through the beginning in what will hopefully only be a few weeks.

Here's WBK pages 294-302. A whopping nine page update, yay! :D

Also, we've finally managed to reach 300 pages, which is awesome. Three hundred pages?? And that... thing... hasn't even happened yet... O_o

Book fair and 5 new/old pages [Sep. 28th, 2008|05:09 pm]

[Feeling | nervous]

The Book Fair in Gothenburg went all right. :) We talked to some of Sweden's biggest publishing companies and they all seemed positive, complimented us on the look of the comic pages and wanted to see more. We collected business cards and are going to keep in touch with the companies during the upcoming weeks, now that the fair has ended. We're of course hopeful that something will come out of this, but no promises so far. ;)

Anyway, we started redrawing the first few pages of WBK, and you can see the first 5 redrawn under the cut! Enjoy. (And compare them to THESE if you really feel like it. *cringe*)

Somewhat new beginning here, clicky clicky )

You can also follow the progress right here on the site, if you want to.

Info of General Interest (?) [Sep. 21st, 2008|02:18 pm]

[Listening to |Meat Loaf - "Bat out of hell"]

The Good

-This Thursday (Sep 25th) Mattias and I will be going to the Book Fair of Gothenburg (from their site: "With over 100,000 visitors this is the largest cultural event in the Nordic region") to, for the first time since we started working on What Birds Know, try to charm some publishing companies into considering making a book out of the comic. For us, this is scary, scary stuff, but it's stuff that has to be done, and it's possible that the experience might even be enjoyable. We'll have to see about that. Anyway, that's what we'll be up to this week, so... uh, wish us luck?

-For this event we've produced some material to hand over to the companies that show interest. The first thing we had to do was a poster/promo pic. Here it is! We are aware it's "standard dramatic movie poster 1A" but meh, what do you ask of us? Besides, I think it looks pretty damn nice.

Photobucket

-A super sweet, amazingly kind and generous fan of What Birds Know known as Alex J. offered out of the blue to pay for a domain name for us! ♥ :D So from now on you can find the comic at http://www.fribergthorelli.com/wbk. Update your bookmarks, y'all! (This URL will remain for at least 2 years now. Whee!)

-We are, as of this month, represented both on DeviantArt and Facebook (for "hey, look at us, we exist!" reasons) but don't expect us to actually be active there...

The Bad

-Because of all that and some other things, we have been unable to work on the comic as we should have, which saddens us, but that's how it has to be right now. Regular comicking and updating will resume after the Book Fair. Sorry!

The Ugly

-We're going to have to completely redraw the first ~25 pages of WBK, and also make some changes and touching-up of the pages that follow, to make the comic fit for print. We'll try to do that simultaneously with the usual comicwork, but it's still possible that it will slow down the usual work. We're sorry about that too, but this has to be done sooner or later. We hope that you understand and have patience with us!

Now, back to work...
