AboutThe Free Speech Zone is a community for newsblogging and current events, based on Twistedchick's journal. Its purpose is to provide a place for us to put together the pieces of news on important issues, so that instead of isolated bits of information we can see the patterns that link them together.
Members may post on any topic concerning public affairs, but posts must contain facts and links to articles, news stories or other reputable sources to substantiate opinions and theories. Fact-supported independent thought is welcome. Show us something we aren't seeing elsewhere, something that makes sense of what is happening, and back it up with links to help us see where you're coming from. Feel free to bring your passions with you -- link to action alerts for environmental advocacy, for instance, or information for or against a bill in Congress so that people can contact their Congresspeople about it. Please provide some context for the link you're posting: Why is this important? How is it related to other links, news sources or posts?
What's not allowed? Personal attacks on anyone, online or off; the private life of anyone in the public eye is not a topic for discussion UNLESS it is related to public policy -- *substantive* links must be posted to prove how private behavior is affecting public actions. Gossip isn't welcome here. Namecalling isn't welcome, and any assertion about someone's private life must be accompanied by factual proof. As has been said elsewhere, if you're going to call someone a cocksucker, you'd better have a photo and a notarized statement from the other person who was present at the event.
Trolls will be bounced hard enough to make their heads spin. Anyone who comes here to pick a fight, call someone else a name, or simply to be obnoxious should go elsewhere and not waste everyone's time. Those who troll will be banned from further commenting.
Much as I love my many and various hobbies and non-political interests, this is not a place I'm going to write about them, and I expect that other members will also refrain, simply because there is so much else out there that we have to find out about. If we're all tied up reading about knitting projects, how are we going to have time to track what Congress is doing, or what the Administration is up to?
At the start it is a moderated community; members will be approved for unmoderated posting after their first posts. However, members who do not follow the guidelines above may find that their posts will again need to be approved before they appear in public.
