Boston Free Films Year End Edition: 12/20 - 1/3 Free film screenings have slowed to a trickle, so I'll lump the next two weeks together into one posting. Check the Twitter feed for last minute updates.
I'll be adding MIT's IAP events to the calendar soon, so keep an eye open for interesting events throughout January. Once the new year gets here, it will take a while for the students at other schools to return and get their film screenings organized and announced.
* The Jamaica Plain Forum will show "Young @ Heart" this evening. * You can watch the live finals of "The Sing-Off" at Tufts on Monday night. The Tufts' Beelzebubs are one of 3 finalists. * Also on Monday, you can see "The Nightmare Before Christmas" at the BPL in Copley Square. * Coolidge Corner Branch Library will show "A Christmas Carol" on Christmas Eve. * The BPL Copley will show "Moonstruck" on Christmas Eve. * The BPL Copley will screen "Babes in Toyland" on Monday, 12/28. * Coolidge Corner Branch Library will show "Radio Days" on New Year's Eve. * Also on New Year's Eve, you can see "Dangerous Liaisons" at the BPL. * There are a few other films at libraries and nonprofits around the area.

Boston Free Films: 12/13 - 12/20 Free film screenings are slowing down considerably because of family time, holidays, vacation, blah blah blah. I'll let you know about the scattered showings as best I can. Soon there will be entire days without a single free film. Crank up Hulu and Crackle for free video entertainment (or check out a video from your local public library).
* Tufts Film Series last showings until Janauary are "Inglourious Basterds" today at 2 pm and Monday at 4 pm. * The BPL will finish their Robert Altman film series with "Nashville" on Monday. * Tufts will be screening four student films on social issues Monday at 7 pm. * Harvard will host a screening of "Beneath Everest: Nepal Reborn" on Wednesday. * The Somerville Library will show "The Philadelphia Story" on Thursday. * Real Colegio Complutense continues its Friday night Spanish movie series with "El perro del hortelano". * The Harvard Film Archives will screen Christmas short films on Saturday. * There are several other films at libraries and nonprofits around the area.

Boston Free Films: Dec. 6th - 13th We are now entering the "wind-down zone", meaning that colleges are finishing their terms and other venues aren't interested in films that don't involve reindeer or ghosts of Christmas past. This will be the last week with a semi-packed schedule until January.

The End of Suburbia: 12/7, 7pm, Somerville Library Please join us for a special community screening of...
:: THE END OF SUBURBIA :: Mon December 7 @ 7p @ Somerville Public Library (79 Highland Ave) presented by State Rep. Denise Provost & Somerville Climate Action
"The End of Suburbia" uncovers the birth of the quintessentially-American suburb, and examines its deep reliance on a cheap fuel that is slowly fading -- pushing us forward to an unsustainable future. How soon will we choose to adapt to our understood limits? How should we redefine quality of life, our built landscape, and the American Dream? Please join us after the film for a brief discussion.

Tufts Global Lens Film Series - The Last Week This is the last week of the Global Lens Film Series and it may go down as the best local film series that nobody has seen. You can blame it on the schedule, the location, the obscure nature of the films, logistics problems (room changes, a power outage, schedule mistakes). I've seen some good (and some head-scratching) films that I'll probably never have the chance to see again and the crowds have been tiny.
Take a chance this week and see some interesting movies (though I'll admit, most aren't uplifting). There are six films from around the world waiting for you this week at the top of the hill.
Here's a link to the schedule: http://ase.tufts.edu/ir/eventsGlobalLens.htm
Everything's on my calendar as well.
All screenings are free and open to the public.
* Tufts Global Lens Film Series:
+ The Photograph (Indonesia), Weds. 8 pm + Margarette's Feast (Brazil), Thurs. 8 pm + Possible Lives (Argentina), Fri. 7 pm + I am from Titov Velles (Macedonia), Sat. 7 pm + What a Wonderful World (Morocco), Sun. 2 pm + Song from the Southern Seas (Kazakhstan), Sun. 3:30 pm

Special Event @ Wellesley: New Directions in Documentary Film: 10/19 - 10/25 I just stumbled upon this event at Wellesley - a week of documentary film screenings, receptions and panel discussions featuring a number of directors. The highlight looks to be Wednesday with screenings of both versions of "Grey Gardens" and the director of the original, Albert Maysles. They may even feed you a couple of times during the week.
All events are free and open to the public.

Tufts Film Series Fall 2009 Schedule
We now have a complete schedule available on line. There are a few TBAs and things are always subject to change, but it looks like a good line up. (500) Days of Summer, District 9, The Hurt Locker, Ponyo and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince are some of the highlights. http://www.tuftsfilmseries.com/schedule/ As has been confirmed by the organizers of the Film Series, the films are open to anyone in the area as long as Tufts students have first dibs. All films will screen in Barnum 008 (back entrance to the building). I'm not exactly sure yet what the pattern will be for showings, but this past weekend was:
Film 1: Friday 7 pm, Saturday 7:30 pm, Sunday 5 pm
Film 2: Friday 10:30 pm, Saturday 5 pm, Sunday 8:30 pm
I'll update my Google calendar as soon as I can. Enjoy.
