Warning: Plagiarizing on the Rise
[info]kmylml
Hi Everyone,

I would like to make an announcement (if that's ok with the mods) that there has been an alarming increase of reported plagiarizing happening on fictionpress and fanfiction. Due to these disgusting occurrences, many popular fp and ffn writers are taking down their stories and some are even deleting their accounts.

Plagiarizing is absolutely unacceptable and we readers (and writers) must take a stand against it! There is an LJ group called fpwatchers that is actively searching for possible acts of plagiarism and has tips on how to do a search on your (or other people's) stories. All suspected acts are posted and the original authors are notified of their work being copied. I would suggest that everyone take part in hunting down these dispicable copy cats. If you are an avid fp reader, do your favorite authors a favor and look out for their work that you admire so much (and inform the original author of the incident!). If you are an author, I would highly suggest that you do an internet search of your own work.

Popular sites that plagiarizers like to post on are: quizilla.com, deviantART.com, wordpress.com, wattpad.com, scribd.com, winglin.net, blogspot.com, and even myspace.com!

We must all do our best to stop plagiarism!

It's been a while since I've read a story on Fictionpress that actually made me think. Maybe I have a soft spot for philosophical science-fiction or maybe it's just really that good.

Story Title: Milky Way
Author: Lachrymosa
Summary: He fell in love with a galaxy and death paved the way to the stars.
Rating: PG
Category: Sci Fi
Boring/Intense: 10
Character Development: 9
Overall Style: 9
Personal Comments: I think the thing that really stuck out about this piece is that there is an interpretive level to the story. It gives off a sort of existentialist vibe, and a bit Camusian. The writing isn't overly done. It's not littered with too many adjectives, metaphors, other literary devices that supposedly give a story 'flavor'. There are some technical mistakes but the author is only 17, maybe even younger when she wrote this. It most certainly not a perfect piece of writing but content-wise, there was enough meat in there to keep me thinking about this a good while after I read it. And all under 1500 words! An excellent read.

Does anyone know of any stories that involve religion? I was at a concert (?) by Joel Osteen a few weeks ago, and he was talking about his wife, and he said something like  "I walked in to get my watch fixed when I saw a beautiful girl behind the counter. I was lucky she was a Christian girl because I told myself, if she wasn't, I was going to convert her!" That was just so adorable that I wanted to read something like that. So any romance story that deals with religion (and has a happy ending!). haha

What genre gets the most reviews/reader response?
[info]blaanidblaanid
I have a story, and it can be described as supernatural, drama, romance, fantasy, or general, so I have a lot of options. It's still in the process of being written, but when it's done I'll have to know where to put it, and, you know, I'd like some feedback by readers.

I haven't ventured out of the romance category much, so I'm not acquainted with the genres my story can fit into. There is romance in it, but it isn't the focus of the story, love in general is, but that applies to family and friendship, even though there is romance in it. There is magic in it and one character gets turned into a werewolf, but the world the story takes place is not all fantasy like, it's supernatural in the werewolf sense, but it focuses more on human nature.

The categories it can go into are romance, supernatural, and general, I guess, but I've never looked through the general section and I rarely go into the supernatural, but I don't think the romance is big enough to be placed in romance, so I don't want people complaining about more interactions (even though the two that fall in love do spend an awful amount of time together).

So:

What stories can i find in supernatural and general?
Which of the three, supernatural, romance, or general, gets more response?

And please no "write for yourself" comments. Let's be serious: we want reviews.

Recommendations
[info]floatco
I've been reading Dostoyevsky and Burroughs for school this semester and I'm finished and want to indulge my casual reading side. I'm looking for possibly some supernatural-esque Romance, or some good/angsty Slash that doesn't read like it was written by a giggling fourteen year old fangirl. No Queen of Glass, WereCAT, etc, please. Spelling and grammar are a must, and I admit that I am kind of picky when it comes to writing style, particularly things that read like fluffy satires. That bugs me. I don't mind het, slash, M Rated (which is actually my preference), or anything else akin to that. I'm also alright with horror/adventure/etc, so exclusively romance isn't a must.
Some authors that I would recommend if you're looking are Stillill, NiceShoesLetsFcuk, and tits-n-tats. A couple of supernatural romances that I'm reading right now are Broken Wings, Davy Harwood, GooseSwan, Darkness Run, Bite to Break Skin, and Sweet Miseria.
I haven't had the time to really search fictionpress for nearly a year now, but  I used to be able to dig through dozens of stories, so I've read quite a lot. However, my well has run dry, so your help would be appreciated :)

Beautiful Mistakes
[info]kmylml
Story Title: Beautiful Mistakes
Author: Sam Mariano
Summary:
Julie the straight A student may know what she's doing in college, but when it comes to her love life she can't seem to get it right. Why would she move in with her ex? When she accidentally lands a nanny job, it seems things are looking up- but are they?
Rating:
M
Category: Romance, Drama
Boring/Intense: 7
Some mystery about the characters and their backstory that are revealed as you read further. Loads of drama and conflict between the characters as they try to resolve their issues.
Character Development: 10
Characters are written very well and have a lot of depth. It's very easy to relate to what the characters are going through. There's no "good vs. evil," but "shades of gray" instead.
Overall Style: 9
Some spelling errors and a grammatical error every few chapters. A lot of dialogue and it is written in third person, mainly from the main character's point of view. Other characters' points of views are included, but it is minimal.
Personal Comments:
As of this post, the story is not yet completed. I was browsing through fp late at night and came upon this story and decided to chance it. What happened instead was that I read 17 chapters (112,674 words) in one sitting and the sun came up. I thought it started off slow at first, but it really got good after the first couple of chapters. I'd say read at least 4 or 5 chapters before making a judgement call. This story is set in modern times and it's rated M for a reason, so don't say I didn't warn you. There's nothing too graphic - just a couple of sex scenes and discussion of sensitive topics. The plot is pretty original, in my opinion, and everything is well played out so far. It looks like the author has the major storyline and the ending all figured out, so it definitely doesn't feel like she's writing on the fly. I can appreciate that because I hate it when it feels like "The Neverending Story."
The only real criticism I have is that some of the situations in the story seem a little far fetched or not very realistic. However, that's just my take on it, and it's not my work. Then again, maybe there's a reason for certain events to happen that will reveal themselves at the end. These little nitpicks can easily be overlooked and they don't take away from the plot at all. I really like where this story is going and the author is a very good writer, so I'm going to keep checking for updates on this gem. Try this one out if you have a chance!

This is a bit of a weird request, but...

[info]hustle_rose010
Has anyone read any good/interesting fics dealing with incest? Not necessarily of the smutty/romancey sort...any stories that deal with the psychological aspects of it, what happens if other family members or someone else finds out, etc., are welcome. BTW, I'm talking about two consenting participants, not parent/child stuff or anything like that :/

(random request is random)

Just wondering...
[info]humorousrash
Does anyone know what happened to Kegs and Black Cherries? I forget who the author was exactly, but I just thought of it today and realized that it hadn't been updated in awhile, and then when I went to look for it on my alerts list it was gone. After further investigation, I can't find it at all. Anybody know what happened to it?

Any slash fans out there?

Hey guys, newbie here.

I was wondering if anyone around these parts reads m/m stories. 'Cause it's about all I read romance-wise. ^_^; I'm seeking recs because recently sorting through all the badfic on FP has been torture. I'd like to read some realistically-paced fics--as in, the characters don't fuck within the first chapter. Or even kiss! And something with complex, well-developed characters that you laugh and cry with and get pissed off at...when will these teenyboppers realize that 'Goth' is not a personality type?!

I'll read just about any genre, though if any of you have read Stupid Post It Notes, I love stories along those lines.

Thanks!

Just to let you guys know: it's going to take a while for the tags to become useful. I'm going back to the '05 posts and tagging so we can have all the posts search-able.

-I'm on January 2006 as of now...

Who knew we'd have a "carnival" tag?? Tagging all these posts started out kind of tedious, but it's neat going back and reading all the great reviews/ discussions.

Here's something I found:

Q&A with author, Deena
Would we want to do something like this again?

Don't forget to tag all new posts! Thanks :)

NOTE!
[info]fyction
Ok, I will get flamed for this, but it is necessary.

THERE WILL BE NO MORE SELF-REVIEWING. It doesn't happen in the real world and it doesn't happen here.

But authors, chill. Twice a month there will be a post titled: "REVIEW ME" where you can comment with a link to your story. I'm sure you'll get responses from all the great readers here.

From here on out, you should note that a 'pimp' or review of your own story will be deleted unless it is put under the appropriate post.

This community was created for great readers to find great writers, there is no reason to spam it up.

Away With Jenny Wren (a review!)
book tree
[info]writtenfp
Story Title: Away With Jenny Wren

Author: faerie-gumdrops

Summary: Mikey was in love and it killed him-a big bang and my best friend was blood and memories. Now, the new girl is flashing her star-spangled knickers at me as I look down the barrel of a fairy's gun. I guess the only thing to do is enjoy the ride.

Rating: T

Category: Young Adult/ Romance/ Slight-Angst?

Boring/Intense: It's very intense! The author keeps you in suspense the entire time, wondering what will happen next.

Character Development: I love her characters, especially the narrator, Luca. She writes really flawed people, but you can't help but feel for them and hope that things work out for the best.

Overall Style: The author's style was what really drew me to this story. It's incredibly surreal and gorgeous, and very different from what I'm used to reading. It's especially interesting because the story utilizes an unreliable narrator (sort of?), which makes you doubt if the narrator is being honest. It's definitely one of the better examples of first person POV that I've seen on FP.

(sorry that I didn't use numbers! it just feels weird.)

Curious...

Anyone know what happened to SKoW? There was a server failure before that initially took down the site, but then they got it back up and running for awhile, but now that new site is gone as well. Any ideas? Last I heard, there was some new, ripoff (go ahead, debate me on this. the layout is the same, the concepts are the same, the rules are the same, the format is the same. hello. there is coincidence and then there is blatant "borrowing") site, and then caput. Nothing. This is kind of a bummer, IMHO. Anybody agree/have information?

Hey all,

This community has been ignored for way too long. I'm the new moderator here and hopefully we can get things up and better :)

Hey guys! I'm really kind of sad that this community is kind of dead, because it is my primary source of finding good fics to read instead of wading through the piles upon piles of crap that clog up much of FictionPress. So, in an effort to get something new to read when I'm browsing the Internet instead of trying fruitlessly to find things myself, I pose a question to all you FP readers: What is your favorite FP story?

In any genre, at any length, by any writer, I don't care. Feel free to list more than one, or more than a few, I just want to know what they're called and what they're about. Hopefully you guys can help me. :D
