Here are just a couple of my found roses. The first one came from an old garden belonging to the family of my best friend on Whidbey Island. They were kind enough to give me many cuttings. And these next two are from the same plant, just different lighting, and they purple a bit as they age. They were found in an old lot next to our local Subway Restaurant. The bush was bulldozed to make way for apartments, but luckily a friend of mine took cuttings first and then shared it with me. | | Tuesday, December 5th, 2006 | 5:21 pm [ramblecrazed]

rosebush ~ new growth
* It was little more than a week ago I was concerned about new growth. ALL of the red leaves are now newer growth~ * Transplanting her 'out of cycle' + potted - may have somehow stimulated her to grow..? I've tried to read about roses, the subject matter + care involved, it bewilders me. I love her + she loves me. My first affair with a rosebush. Go figure..! ;) We haven't had our first frost yet, so I've moved her up beneath the soffit overhang. Frost will wreck havoc on her new growth, poor lil' PetitePink rosebush, she seems confused. I'm confused too.. We can be befuddled together - - she the thorny miniature + I the thorny wild beast. =) Thank you to those of you who've offered your kind words of assistance to our plights. ♥ * | | Sunday, November 26th, 2006 | 6:01 pm [ramblecrazed]

Here is a list of roses I took cuttings from this year that seem to be doing well and are either putting out new growth, or look like they are about to. "Upper Samish Rambler" From what I could see from the road (it meandered back through the woods quite a ways and was intetwined up trees with ivy) seems to be a large rambler with long leaves with jagged edges. The stems are smooth with occassional sharp hooked thorns. The flowers are semi double white, about the size of a 50 cent piece, with very little scent. I figure it must be nearly indestructable to be growing in such deep shade with ivy and doing fine. "Swan Rose 2" Looks almost identical to "Swan Rose 1" but I wanted to be sure. If it is the same, a possible identification might be " Gloire de France". It is a very double light pink rose, once blooming, that is growing with no attention out of a road side embankment. I pulled up a bit that still had the smallest bit of root attatched. "Starbird Damask" is a loosely double pink rose with good scent. The damask identification is purely a guess... It was the most interesting of several roses growing along a fence on Starbird road near a friend's house. "Thompson's Greenhouse" is a rose I have not looked at closely. It is a dark pink rose of good scent, very full, canes mostly smooth with hooked thorns, seems to bloom only once. It was found across the street near Thompson's Greenhouse predictibly enough. Rosa Mundi is a rose that needs no introduction. It is quite commonly found in this area. I pried up a few almost suckers from an empty house not far from my home. Looks like they took well and are sending up lots of new growth. A friend gave me several small cuttings from her roses. I'd never tried rooting cuttings that were so small. I tried a new meathod of rooting, and so far so good. Most of them look great. "Cheryl's Mystery rose" Which I don't remember much except it smelled great and was a dark pink and very full. She says it gets bad mildew and disease but does well anyway. Commandant Striped Leotine Gervaise (I am SOOOO in LOVE with this rose) "Alice Vena?" not sure of the id on this rose... I've seen about 5 roses people called this, and very few of them look the same. It is a very small double purple rose. I have a few more that may or may not make it... the jury is still out. Two other roses given me by friends are doing fine. One is a found rose that has been identified as probably Paul Ricault. I have two plants of this from the same generous soul. The other is a found rose that is likely Celsiana. | | Wednesday, June 14th, 2006 | 11:18 pm [madspinner]

More found roses....
Well, I've been busy! I've taken cuttings or suckers from 3 more roses in the area. One is a pink semi double damask (I think) of somekind, one is a vigorous rambler with white semi double flowers, and one is almost certainly Rosa Mundi. I started cuttings from several roses (including one mystery) that were given to me by a friend. They are all rather smaller than I usually start, so I am trying a new method for starting cuttings that invloves putting them in a bag. I hope it works. I was given two rooted cuttings in pots of a mystery rose a friend found near his house. After some asking around we believe it to be Paul Ricalt. I'm going to have to dig around and see if I can find more pots! Fara, did you want me to mail you a cutting? Or did you want me to root it and try to send it to you after it has some roots? Let me know. I'm certainly interested in helping you see where your mystery roses want to grow. Let me know if you want to send me some sometime. Here is another...
This one was found on hwy 9 in Skagit County, WA. The original bush was bulldozed and the lot turned into tract housing. Both a friend and I have pieces of this one. It reminds me of a hybrid gallica. What do you think? | | Thursday, June 8th, 2006 | 8:26 pm [madspinner]

Is this Rose de Resht? I have a couple of these roses that came from cuttings. It seems to be easy to root. This particular one was rooted two summers ago and is likely big enough to get planted out in the garden. | 4:19 am [madspinner]

I'm slow...
I only just figured out how to post to groups I belong to... duh. So I will post several found roses on here in the next few days. I'd do it now, but I don't have access to my photos from here. I'm sure you saw the one I put up on rosegrowers. I've got a LOT of found roses. Last year I took cuttings from about 30 diffrent plants. Of that, I now have around 15-20 growing roses to identify. I've been taking pictures when they bloom, so I'm hoping to be able to figure out most of them. Some of them I already have a pretty good idea of their identity, others not a clue. Found Roses.Org is up and running!
Hi, all, FoundRoses.Org is up and running. Please take a look at the website. Right now the only roses on it are mine; let's not let that state of affairs continue. If you have a rose, and don't know what it is, please gather as much information about it as you can and post it here. I'll post it to the website. Eventually I hope to have a database of roses so that if you're into hybridizing, you can look for a rose that has exactly the color, leaf shape, thorn number, moss and/or whatever else you're looking for. | | Sunday, April 2nd, 2006 | 12:03 pm [fara_shimbo]

The Marbled Moss found?
I went down to the ditch where the Marbled Moss grows--or I say, should be growing, because when I got there, it seems that all the mosses in the ditch have died over the winter. Wah! I was hoping to make endless cuttings from them, but I guess it isn't going to happen. On the other hand, I just took the winter mulch off the two Marbled Moss plants in the garden and found that one has made two suckers and the other has two long ones and seems to be about to grow two more. I spoke to the folks at The Uncommon Rose and the feeling is this rose might be an old moss called Ma Ponctuée. As you can see from the link I finally found someone who sells this rose, so I just ordered one. My hope is to grow them side-by-side so I can compare the differences. So far as I know, Fa's Marbled Moss only blooms once; Ma Ponctuée is supposed to have "fair" rebloom. So we'll see what happens. A boatload of new roses will be coming the first week in May! | | Monday, March 20th, 2006 | 9:37 am [fara_shimbo]

Welcome to Found Roses
If you live anywhere where there is still pastureland, ditches, very old homesteads, cemeteries, Stately Homes and the like, you are sure to come across some hidden treasures: roses growing on their own with no help from anyone. Sometimes they are species native to the area, sometimes they are old roses long forgotten... and sometimes they are something entirely new. I've had hopes of putting together a website that would be a databank for Found Roses, where folks could submit a rose they've found and the rest of us could look at it, try to figure out what it is—unless it's something entirely new—and generally share it. Then it occurred to me that this would be an excellent place to start; hard to put up a website when you don't have much material to share. So if you've found a rose, please do share. Photos are welcome, just remember, lj-cut is our friend. To start things off, I'd like to introduce you to two found roses of mine: Fa's Marbled Moss was actually found in one of my irrigation ditches by jonsinger, where it grows beside an enormous bank of Desirée Parmentier. Between the two stands grows Fa's Demi-Moss, which appears to be a cross of the two. Let me know what you think! |
