wow, these are pretty cool. I love the ones of the body floating in the waves. looks like a pretty cold and miserable day though.

I think most will get the reference, but if you don't, it might be interesting to link this

The photos are based on Ingmar Bergman's film "Persona"

For one thing, the nurse in Persona didn't wear couture in every shot. The only photo that reminds me of Persona is the 11th, with the coolie hat, and the pose isn't so unusual for beach photos that it couldn't be just coincidence.

But if you're right, and the photographer intended to reference Persona with the other shots, it turns the emotionless tone of these pictures into a pitifully weak imitation, instead of just another low-impact fashion spread.

it is obviously a tribute to bergman's persona. Her headband and glasses, the shot of her holding the camera, the shot of them sunbathing, the shot of the two in the MIRROR...I mean. COME ON. Have you SEEN the movie? It can't get more obvious than this. Although I don't know what the fuck that mannequin floating around in the waves in these pictures is all about... And the tone of the photos isn't emotionless at all, if you know it's about Persona or not. And why does it have to be an imitation? I think it's a fun idea, that bergman might've dug it if he was around to dig

Okay, there's a head-band, a coolie hat, one shot framed more or less the same way as Persona, and it's two women at the beach, so maybe Meisel really was trying to channel Bergman, and a feeble thematic resemblance was the best he could do. Nobody ever accused Steven Meisel of being deep.

Forgetting about Bergman and his hypothetical reaction to this knock-off for a moment, it's probably more relevant to compare Meisel to Sven Nykvist, one of the most geometric cinematographers in the history of film, and that particular style isn't exactly apparent in a spread with five shots of a model flopping around on the beach like a fish out of water, and where the most direct imitation, the strange mirror-embrace, turns into one girl just fiddling around with another girl's hair.

I like fashion photography that does what no other art-form can do... Kate Moss standing in a garden with a huge bouquet of balloons and a dress like an extra-terrestrial flower...

Neither Bergman nor Sven Nykvist could dream up that shot, and Lance Staedler is a hundred times more fun than the corporate factotum Steven Meisel.

oh, so excellent!

there's a level of tension here rarely seen in fashion photography. so cinematic. it's even well acted...

also, the casting is perfect.

These could have been better. When I saw the first picture, I was looking forward to seeing a shoot with lovely and warm, sandy colours. Instead, they were 90% B&W, okay photos, and the ones that were in colour were really dull.

There is something very cinematic about these, not unusual for Meisel's work.

they're beautiful. and, absolutely, a "pitifully weak imitation",as someone above pointed out, rather than a homage to the movie. recycling isn't always creative.
