Yeah the title keeps throwing me off too! Everytime I look at the covers I feel like I'm reading "ANTM Contestant" or "ANTM Winner." What's the point? We all know there was going to be a all black model issue so why do you need to have that on the cover lol? I know this is a very big deal but I just feel sadden by it all because it's taken this long and I had a feeling that it might turn out a little distasteful. I can only imagine the next time something like this happens again, in the next three decades or so. I still can't see much change as far as equal oppurtunity for black models in the fashion industry. I hope I'm wrong but highly doubt it.

in the black and white photos, they have washed out the models' skin with the lighting. it's to the point where they look white. it's pretty pointless to try to show that black women are beautiful by washing them out and making them look less "black"

I think the color pictures are really pretty though. are there more of those in the magazine?

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]gerrronimo
2008-07-03 09:23 pm UTC (link)
I agree about washing them out

Also, the shots are freaking boring. Just because they're being all ~*revolutionary*~ by using all black models doesn't mean their ethnicity can carry a boring shoot and inject life into it. They are relying too much on the concept and not focusing on the photography

And I wish they had just published the issue without making a huge deal about the races of the models within its pages. It would've been a more powerful statement if nothing had been said and the title hadn't proclaimed its intentions.

I thought the photography would be better given all the hype about this issue. But the models are stunning! It's a bitter sweet moment because black beauty still isn't appreciated in the fashion industry. Still, the magazine is long over due! Sad that it has to take decades for just one black model to be on a Vogue cover, even more sad that the ~token~ black model gets the cover every time. I hope this open doors for other black models. I don't see why so many are excluded in the first place!

for those who think this issue is racist, do you feel the same about an all white issue? LOL...they are FAR more common.

Anybody who thinks Steven Meisel was FORCED into this is naive beyond belief. Do you have any idea of his POWER in this industry? The fact that this issue happened is a testament to it.

The fat argument is a lame dodge...sorry, but it is and you know it. Almost every objection to this that I've read here is a justification. Don't like it, don't buy it...

A. I don't think this is racist.
B. I think the given photos are boring.
C. I don't get why they made Tyra's skin look white as snow with makeup or w/e, and washed out the others with lighting. Kindof defeats the point of the theme.

English is not my first langage either so I might have been misunderstood. I just pointed out that people reacted very quickly when it came to "race", finding outrageous that somebody could not be able to appreciate "black beauty", but were not able to apply that to, let's say, other body types. As for yala agni, I think she's just trying to be a little bit provocative. Nice try.

Though I wouldn't deem it 'racist', I think it's extremely difficult to make a statement against racism if they choose only one minority to grace their magazine. It probably would have been more effective to do photoshoots with a wide variety of ethnicities and to label it a "multicultural" issue rather than an "all black" issue.

But on the photos themselves, I love the black & white one with the cigarette; unfortunately, I'm a little blase regarding the rest, especially after all the hype.

disgusting. so black people in vogue is supposed to be such an amazing and breakthrough thing that they have to have their own issue instead of just being intergrated with everyone else? "black" people are a normal thing, just like "white" people shoots or the shoot of any other race, not something that should be used to suggest ~*~*avant-garde-ness~*~*~. i thought society was over that stage.

You have point, even though I didn't really see it like that.
I think that vogue having an all back issue really just emphasizes how bad the situation really is and sort of makes the lack of black models elsewhere much more evident. Like raising a spotlight on the industry.
It seems kind of early to decide though. I guess I'd have to wait until the next issue (of vogue and other magazines) to see whether this was just a gimmick or a real ploy for change.

At first I thought, good for them! This could be the start of something. It's not perfect, like simply integrating visible "minorities" into fashion magazines, but it's a start. It's also a reflection of the fashion industry today in that we have such a lack of models that are not white on the runways, in the edits, hired for big ad campaigns, etc. Thanks to Meisel for pointing that out in a very in-your-face sort of way.

Upon seeings these, however, I'm pretty disappointed. As many people have pointed out, the lighting has completely washed out complexion and skin tone. The black and whites should just be called whites. I'd be interested to see who made the executive decision to lighten these to the extent that they did. I might be picky, but I don't think white-washing the black issue (and good for them for blatantly titling it "Black Issue", no holds barred) is the step forward some of us were hoping for.

As for the very first poster, give her a break. She wasn't politically correct, but she's not ~*RaCiST*~. She just didn't like the five white-washed photos she saw here and decided not to spend the money on something that wasn't aesthetically appealing to her. I don't think people should buy this just because they feel it's the "right" thing to do. And I hope that wasn't Meisel or Vogue's intention. I think people should be just as critical of this issue as they are of any other.
