Wow... I must say, I'm really surprised how conservative so many of these repsonses are. To begin with, 1989... this is an enormous affront the first age of the supermodel. It is also an affront to the notion of woman as sculpted, synthetic, plastic "surgery" doll. This is also extremely aggressive, and resonates with the very unnatural tones of the aerobics trend of the era. It also plays on S&M theme AND, in addition to that (not related, but also a question of control) the psychology of body image disorders.
Rubbish? I would hardly think so...
this shoot is transgressive and multivalent... there is a tremendous amount of response to timely social phenomenon right here...
It's too bad people are often only looking at these images for reasons of costume design, or art direction, or what is "hot"...
THis is why Steven meisel went on to do so many other great, and subversive bodies of work... with huge budgets, costume budgets, etc. THis is a shoot with one model and a wall... and it is still eliciting near visceral reaction!

don't take it out on people's sanctimony! so be it a plain conservatism or whatever, who damn cares? we're looking at the shapes and icons firstly. we appraise what the image expresses by itself. the average man may not be familiar with Meisel or Linda e.g. (it would be funny but still) and he/she may not get charged up about what Meisel's done and that he's such a great photographer. but he/she is able to feel such an art and it's all up to them to voice their opinions. they like it? ok. they just hate it? very good! talks on multivalency? leave this to highbrows. budgets?? spare my life! what business is that of anybody's?

"talks on multivalency? leave this to highbrows."

Huh? What is that even supposed to mean? I surely don't consider myself "lowbrow". But, that being said, if this community wants commenting/discussion that is short, snippy, and not-so-smart, then I guess that's fair enough
...

" budgets?? spare my life! what business is that of anybody's?"

We're looking at photos generated for the fashion industry. Budgets are of paramount concern to anyone working in fashion whether its commissioning work or considering the impact of such work.

Spare your life... sure, I will do that... I'm nice that way.

ha!

your synopsis on the editorial is very intelligent and the description of the elements in the photography make me appreciate the ed even more. Constipation was the farthest thought that came to mind when I first glanced at the model. some people can be too shallow and harshly critical of fashion editorials today, its no wonder photo shop is increasingly used by photographers.

Thank you for your kind reply =-).

I don't think there's anything wrong with harsh criticism, but when it's not backed up with a valid argument and when it's lacking an understanding of context, then I think it's just a waste of air and/or keystrokes as the case may be.

Viva thinking!

Well while we all wash in the expected waves of toilet water opinions, let me just point out to you children that while you don't "understand" the shoot or approve of the model, Linda Evangelista is one of the most successful models in history. She was/is fearless and ever changing.

I also have to wonder what about L.E. makes her "appear un-feminine"? Could it be that she isn't flouncing around playing up to the typical Maxim stereo type of femininity?

This is not my favorite photo shoot, but it is worthy of viewing. Not only for the less than "ohhhhhhh that's ever so pretty" aspect of it but because of the clothing. Some of the finest Avant Garde cuts of the day. I have to wonder why in a fashion oriented community more time is spent picking apart the attributes of the models than saying anything at all relevant about the fashions?

So when did this community become MODEL HOT? OT NOT?

Go benson3, go!

Please see my comment above so you know what I'm talking about...

For me, what's depressing about the model hot/not back n' forth is that the community is called photo decadent... I thought we were supposed to be appreciating excellent art direction, styling, social relevancy, and the historic context of images.

sigh...

I agree with you. I'm sure anyone will agree that the shoot is certainly not pretty. But it's not meant to be aesthetically pleasing. Strange shoots like these distance the viewer (so they are not emotionally attached) and this is intended to make the viewer realize the message threaded through the piece - which is all about the stuff you mentioned in your first comment (the historical context).
This technique appears in music and theatre as well. This shoot was actually kinda groundbreaking as it sooo stands out from the [beautiful] yet typical fashion editorials. The shoot has clearly succeeded; just look at the controversy it has sparked on this site!

Linda Evangelista appears un-feminine to me not in a derogatory way; it is just a personal opinion based on affinities:I am more of a Ruslana type of person, preferring a more ethereal look in women, even kawaii,to the strong and edgy emanation that Evangelista and other models exude: I respect her muchly, though. Regarding fashion, you are right:sometimes we miss the whole picture. In this post, I like Evangelista's leopard bra: it adds character to the shot.
And yes,this community is called ‛foto decadent‛ for a reason.‛ Decadent‛ meaning cadere in latin, ‛to fall‛ and may I add,‛to fall beautifully and slowly...‛

O.

I really do love the outfits and I think Linda always looks great and does well in her shoots, although I think this totally missed the mark as far as meeting the concept. I get that it's supposed to look like she's, you know, fighting the devil or w/e, but it just doesn't.

Seriously, the cuts on the clothes are really interesting, though. In a way, I like that there isn't a lot to distract from them.
