Ha. I was kinda thinking the same thing. It was ten years ago, which explains it.

I think Milla is gorgeous, but I don't really find women that skinny appealing when they are nude. not enough curves!
plus she has those crazy eraser nipples and they kind of weird me out a little

The weird part about the Milla-ster is that in a movie or on television or any time she's moving around, she's the sexiest thing on two feet.

Take static images of her and she becomes this bizarre-looking thing. I won't say she's *ugly,* as that's a subjective judgment, but at least to me, her moving around just does not look anything like her sitting still.

Alot of people say I look like her which I take as a compliment.
I do much prefer her now, at a normal weight. She is just scary skinny in those pics above... but beautiful face. :)

Wow. I normally adore anything that Mila does, but this is repugnant.
She looks like she's about to die or something. Very unflattering.

Lighting?

Something about the lighting in this shoot really coordinates with the clothes, hair, and makeup to give it a very vintage look. Can anyone here speculate or tell me about how this shot looks like it was lit?

As for the model, I enjoy the drama of the poses, and she uses her body well for these dramatic angles. I cannot decide if she looks threatening or vulnerable in most of these shots.

Re: Lighting?

my guess, as far as lighting, is that they used one main light from above, slightly from the front, and angled slightly to the right (judging by the shadows), and then used a really big/close bounce card or panel to fill in the shadows a little.

this gives is a vintagey look for a few reasons..
1) it's really simple and cheap, which is how they did things back then (not anymore, for the most part)
2) it has more dark grey tones, without a huge amount of contrast (highlights are not especially bright), which is an aesthetic choice that doesn't seem very fashionable these days

also it looks like it was shot on black &white film, which in my experience tends to capture way more midtone &greys than digital, or colour film images converted to black &white.

hope this helps.

PLUS I totally agree with your comment about threatening vs. vulnerable. I think that's why it's strong.

This shoot was hit or miss. It got a lot better new the end once she starts taking off the dress.
These two work the best for me.

I've never liked her very much anyway, but there's something to masculine about her for the feel of this shoot. It reminds me of the "progression shots" of Eadweard Muybridge...I don't know if that's what he was going for, but it's there.
