i don't get it..
why a photographer can become so famous even if he makes a girl like kate moss look ugly and ordinary (eg pics 1 and 2)
random situations, dull lightning...
this kind of snapshot aesthetic in fashion photography...
sorry i just don't get it..
(thanks for posting though)

because it's counter to the dramatic lighting, it's boring, basically the opposite of what is already out there that helps teller create a distinct style.

i'm not a fan either

i think its also cos the overexposure gives it a polraoid effect, which is generallly something people like.

yeah good point. his photos also convey a diy (do it yourself) feeling too, which i like.

Exactly what I've been trying to tell people, superpollo. Not only do I not get it, it's also really annoying. I used to look to fashion photography for inspiration, but now when I feel like I'm taking better pictures than "professionals" I get annoyed.

I mean, editor's have made it plainly obvious with these snapshots that you have to know somebody in the industry to get anywhere.

My boyfriend (he's a photographer) and I were talking about this. I HATE snapshot-type photographs, but there are still quite a few great fashion photographers out there. I showed him some of Supreme showcards and he loved them.

I have no idea why Teller's work is still seen as "edgy." Its common now... and time to move on to let more creative and talented photographers shine.

Agreed on that last part, mos def, but what the business are showcards? It sounds like a marketing scheme for the fashion industry to make more money from us consumers.

Teller has taken brilliant pictures in his time, he certainly didn't get anywhere with no talent.

Most consumers don't see showcards. They're more how agencies market the models to the clients, not the average Joe.

Definitely agree with your last point. I'd love to see some young people with totally fresh ideas take the stage.

Does anyone know a good livejournal website for amateur photography?

It's like taking a piece of art off of its pedestal.
Taking a model out of his/her typical context.
There's something intriguing about these photos, even if they seem as though you or one of your friends could have snapped it. The fact is that you didn't. Really, it's the fame of the face and the oddly mundane situation it's brought to that makes it intriguing.
Jurgen Teller is alloted the role. It's just...2 names, and 1 intriguing sense of voyeurism.

And the reason it would also be effective with an unknown in fashion is that Kate Moss (or someone similar) did it first. The second would mimic this already-accepted form of fashion photography, even if id doesn't have the key component of a famous face.
It's a silly cycle, and it starts with these type of photographs being littered all through accessible magazines like Vogue. Especially in Marc Jacobs ads, I think?

I used to be a fan of the polaroid/snapshot look, but jesus. Isn't it kind of over now? Eh, and I'm not really all that big on Kate in these shots anyway, although second to last is my favorite of the bunch.

The giant snake is my favorite part of all of this, and that's not saying a lot.

It is SO overused.
If people want the polaroid feel they should copy photographers like Wendy Bevan. Then again I'm in love with her work so maybe I shouldn't be taken seriously.

Someone said they saw these pics at 15 and still likes them now.
Can it be that they were taken when her daughter was a toddler ?
How many years ago was that and how many have been "inspired" by the style since then ?

THESE ARE AMAZING

They show Kate as.. more human than I've ever seen her. I really like that about the shoot. The one with the woman behind the table is incredibly good. Yes, I love this style..

they way he shoots is at first glance easy, simple and obvious... but there is really so much subtlety, humour, wit and intrigue once you spend a longer time with his images. What Teller does is by no means easy, the sort of character he captures in people, and the locations, compositions etc, even the KIND of on camera flash he has... many people try to copy him but no one really comes close.

i like them. the clothes are funny as is the quality of the pictures, well not funny, but not 'high fashion' like. they go well together. plus isn't it encouraging?!! if there's a girl that looks as plain/borderline ugly yet is ridiculously famous as her, then there's hope!!
