I really, really love these,
but the model's nose is a little reminiscent of Michael Jackson's.

All of the pictures without the model are fantastic. She looks almost dead in some of them.

Exactly. The model is kind of boring and expressionless.

yes, i definitely think they're making an interesting
stance by having her look so absolutely livid in most of them,
while they're all vivacious and bright. in a way it's sort of
a criticism to our “western way of living”, so to speak.

Why, what did they get wrong?

The portrayal of their culture, how the magazine romanticized it while still putting it down as a more "primitive" culture than ours.

It's like they said, here, that's a cool-looking place to shoot, let's take all our cameras and high fashion down where all these primitive tribesmen live, and take pictures of helpless-looking, well-dressed white girls among the scantily-clad, feathered natives, who are clustered around her as if she (an embodiment of western culture) were a divine being.

Well, obviously -- it's Vogue. That's sort of how they see themselves, isn't it? I just thought you meant there were more specific inaccuracies. But thanks for articulating that! Because it does need to be said.

Unfortunately Vogue is still shrouded in imperialistic ideology. I didn't read closely enough for specific inaccuracies because when I first browsed through, I was just about to leave the house, but now I feel I should take some more time...

i also felt “something” when i saw this shoot, i am not sure
if i'd say i was offended, but at least i was “taken aback” and that's
why i posted it - i'd like to see what others has to say about it.
tragically i think it's generally a dead end situation with shoots like this,
because regardless of how you portrait it, it's two cultures clashing -
it must be incredibly hard to execute it in a way that doesn't offend or
degrade one side or the other.

while i think you have a point about the whole “let's take all our cameras
and high fashion down where all these primitive tribesmen live”-thing,
in my personal opinion i don't see it as they portrayed as clustered around
a “divine being” - more like they're almost overshadowing her, because she certainly
pales in comparision. but that's just my opinion :)

i didn't want to say it..but i understand what you're saying. I felt somewhat offended, even though I haven't studied the culture. I'm not completely offended but it just didn't feel 'right' to me. I think photoshoots like this are so overdone. I just don't see the point in the photoshoot..the clothes were almost pretty much horrible and she's just so lifeless...they basically put iekeliene next to a some tribe men and took pictures. The men in the photos made the photoshoot..they shouldn't of even put Iekeliene in it

I honestly think they aimed to mimi the garb of the tribes men with the mohair/ feather prada and the giles scarf sweater combo. It is renforcing this seasons overwhenling tribal trends. I take it as a celebration of tribal culture and the beautiful aesthetic. not everything is ment to incite a cause, sometimes it is just fashion as art.

How fucking pretentious - "thankfully, they didn't come out to see us".

Oh, because I'm sure they have a fucking tabloid newspaper highlighting which model and co. is coming into town this season(!) Suffice to say that I stopped reading after that.
I had to study PNG independently [inc. their politics, "real" culture, etc] since I chose the area for an art project in year 8 (age 12), whilst everyone else chose bloody North American/Italian opera [can't remember exact place] for their culture & masks.
Maybe Vogue should watch Bruce Parry's Tribe [esp the episodes where he went to PNG] before they go off jet-setting and adding carbon miles for the sake of a shitty photoshoot that doesn't deliver.

i can understand maybe if people are somewhat offended, but i don't look at it like it's a primitive group of people. it's just a different civilization, doesn't make it better or worse than ours.

i personally think its a cute shoot, especially the giant scarf/sweater.

The only one I thought was even vaguely good was the one were the model is wearing a green dress with a blue backdrop. The rest are eh.
