Agreed, it doesn't matter what the artist's intentions were, it still came out distasteful. It's like saying, Oh, I didn't mean to hit the kid while driving, but in the end, you still killed him. This was bad timing for a shoot. Maybe if they had done it before war broke out.

But the fifth picture is very nice, I like it a lot as long as I look at it w/o regards to the whole shoot.

I really like it. I just find it funny that they used the old DCU's for the uniforms. Couldn't they find ACU's?

The photos are technically very good - color, composition, the selection of the series, etc - but I still find the concept it captures patently offensive.

Ah, well.

I see it as they sent those soldiers in the dessert those prostitutes and that's it. It doesn't really offend me and even though I don't like gratuitious nudity I don't think this is the case. It almost is but not really.

What, it's not enough that the army uses pornography and prostitution to encourage violence in their soldiers, and real women have to pay the price for that - now they're trying to turn it into a fashion statement? Talk about being complicit in one's own oppression. These make me fucking furious.

(Reply to this)

Oh pardon me while I swallow my own vomit.
this shoot is in really poor taste, especially since there are people being blown to bits in *that* war as I look at these stupid fucking, selfish useless pictures. Maybe Meisel should go to Iraq and take photos there and put them on the cover of Vogue.
this is yet more proof that the fashion world has its head so far up its own ass that it shits out its mouth.

I completely disagree. This photoshoot isn't about war, violence or prostitutes. It's about the freedom, youthfulness, and beauty in people and places where you think none are left to exist. They are playful, not tasteless. There is awe and beauty in the raw surroundings. There is awe and gentleness in the men and most of the women. In the shot where the soldier is pushing aside her strap, he is playful and timid, she is the stoic, serious black hole in the center of the image.

And somehow, in the pictures with more than one person doing 'questionable' things, none of them are raw and graphic. There is a stylized silkenness of the women that make them seem unreal and not a part of the world of the soldiers. Unlike other shoots posted here, I don't feel like the women are being degraded or abused. And there is obvious talent in the photographer and the art form, not just some guy wanting to pose obscene photos.

I dated a marine for 3 years, these pictures reminded me of the good parts of it. Not the bad. And I don't feel like they are irreverent in the slightest. The women seem like oasises to the men, tiny islands in the sand.
