I am still awake on day 2 of my eccentric, ridiculous, unhealthy circadian rhythms because I have a midterm at 9:35 and I only finished studying at 5:00 am. I wanted to attempt to sleep for an hour or two just to get a little bit of rejuvenation, but when I lay down, I'm just so stressed out because I need this job to work out because it really, honestly will help me SO much to achieve my goals. I will be so incredibly disappointed if this slips through. Here's your history lesson of the day, while I attempt to recall the 31 pages of information I am supposed to have memorized every word of. 1) Before nationalism, there were two primary units of analysis: tribalism and feudalism. The development of the nation-state began in the mid 17th century, noted as the result of the Peace of Westphalia. The Peace of Westphalia refers to two peace treaties signed in 1648 which ended the Thirty Years War. At odds during the Thirty Years War was the question of authority: was the church or the king a greater authority? The result of the treaty was the establishment of internal political boundaries, territorial adjustments, and greater religous freedom. A nation-state is defined as a sovereign political unit, whose population is committed to a collective identity with a common image of the past and vision of the future, sharing a degree of nationalism. It inhabits a definite territory, recognizes a common form of government, and usually exhibits common linguistic and cultural patterns. It's two principle characteristics are that of sovereignty and nationalism. Sovereignty, as defined originally by Jean Bodin in De La Republique in 1576, is "the states supreme authority over citizens and subjects." This recourse to no higher law that nation-states excercise is dramatically true in wartime, when a nation may send citizens to their death. In internal affairs, sovereignty bring political stability. In international affairs, it is the root of anarchic state of the world. Nationalism has its roots in the French Revolution of 1789, a period of social and political upheaval in which the absolute monarchy underwent radical transformation as a result of the enlightenment principles. It was accompanied by violent turmoil, and this rise of nationalism coincided with the industrial revolution. Marr armies were developed at low cost because of high motivation, and nationalism spread to other nations. This revolution ushered in an era when loyalty to the king was replaced by loyalty to ones homeland. Nationalism is now described as a people's sense of collective destiny through a common past and vision of a common future. A history of common suffering has shown to be more important than common triumph. Several objective characteristics applying to nation-states are territory, economic ties, and common language, religion, and culture. While geographical base remain an important aspect, it's importance has diminished as a result of the atomic age. 2) A nations foreign policy is the expression of its national interest vis-a-vis other nations. This national interest is achieved through coercive means using diplomatic, economic, and military means. A universal goal of foreign policy is the maximization of power, and this quest for enhancement of power is seen in nations search for allies. Power in international relations is the capacity of a nation to use its tangible and intangible resources so as to affect the beior of other nations. There are both relational and psychological aspects of power. 3) In 1914, two systematic alliances dividing Europe in 1914 were the principle cause of WWI. There was tension between the great powers due to military expansion, strained alliances, and the need for power. In 1914, the Industrial Revolution took place, in which there was great technological advancement and social changes, which resuled in unequal distribution of wealth and social unrest. The core issues leading up to the war must also be examined from a psychological perspective, as the flawed personality of leaders and their misperceptions were an important part of the dynamics as well. Ex. Kaiser Wilhelm...austrias ultimatum, declaring war on serbia, misperception of russians, paranoid about england, etc. 5) Operation Barbarosa is the name given to Hitlers planned invasion of the Soviet Union by Nazi Germany in 1941, during WWII. He envisioned a swift conquest of the nation. Planning took several years and was delayed 5 weeks. Hitler came to power in 1933 while Stalin was embarking on the Great Purges, during which substantial military losses were incurred, and the red army morale and competence was low. In order to crush Poland, Hitler needed the Soviet Union as an ally to prevent a two front war. Stalin believed the alliance would buy time and underestimated Hitler's ability to conquer W Europe in only two weeks. 2 days after signing the pact, England and France declared war on Germany. Stalin hoped the nations would destroy each other. Stalin failed to regonize or heed the warning signs of US, Britain, and others. He had exaggerated trust in Hitlers rationality. Meanwhile, in 1940, Hitler, blinded by his hatred, did not recognize the strategic realities of the Soviets. Hitler ultimately lost the war because of his hatred. Stalin emerged triumphant despite mistakes because of his appeal to nationalist sentiments. 6) The Cold War was a period of E-W conflict short of a fullscale war, characterized by mutual perceptions of hostile intentions between the US and USSR, and their respective allies. Competition ensued for Third World influence, and a major superpower arms race took place. The roots of the E-W struggle lie significantly in ideological conflicts bewtween communism and democracy. However, ideology alone did not prompt the SU to break any alliances it would not have on the grounds of national interest. Economic, historical, cultural, and geographical considerations must be noted as well. Chinas role in the E-W struggle grew from the struggle between nationalism and imperialism, when they used SU as a temporary alliance w/ a common bond of communism. Following the Cold War that lasted 40 years and cost 100,000 lives in Korea and Vietnam, the US emerged triumphant but in great debt. SU deteriorated economically. NAtionalism became driving force in Europe. Two consequences were the restructuring of world affairs, institutionalizing the role of the US, and the conception of military alliances-North Atlantic Treaty. 8) The Cuban Missile Crisis took place in 1962, resolved by a blockade and threat of Cuban invasion, between Gorbashchev and Kennedy, effectively. 9) The interwar period between 1919 and 1939 was crucial to understanding the points of conflict leading to WWII. 1919-allies-britain, france, us-met to decide german fate in the treaty of versailles. broke WWI promises to arabs, divided middle east between britain and france-oil became national interest, and zionist desire for national home in palestine. Arabs have been in revolt since. The treaty of versailles named Germany as cause of war, inspiring bitterness and helping the nazi party come to power. Meanwhile, US and Western Europe recoiled from "red terror" and spread of communism, leading to disintegration of SU economy, and in 1936, Stalin hailed his new constitution the msot democratic, and formed alliance with Hitler, which led to operation barbarosa. Lessons: be reasonable w/ opponent. Don't see compromise as weakness. don't humiliate the defeated side..you will create a permanent opponent-ex. arabs. yesterday I fell to earth [13 Oct 2008|09:10am] assmonkeydiary [ music | Sara Bareilles - "Love Song" ] Yesterday I dove into the sky and did not die. I fell for just over a mile with all the velocity that the Earth's gravity could give me. I spun and somersaulted in the air, not purely by intent, but because I was falling. It might have been dizzying if there'd been anything but sky with which to orient myself. Finally I was righted and facing down the rapidly approaching ground. But still I did not die. With the tug of a cord, I stopped falling seemingly completely, held aloft like some dancing marionette by yards and yards of taut nylon. From there I drifted downward another mile, blissfully slow now, amazed by all the swimming pools in the towns below me. When I worked at the McDonalds down there, somewhere, briefly back in high school, those towns had always seemed so poor, but two decades later and miles above, it was another story altogether. As the Earth approached, things sped up, pulling guide wires spun me around fast, making turns as fast as ricochets. I started to fear the landing more and more, but in the end the Earth was kind and took me back without so much as a bruise for all that had I cheated her hardness and gravity. And then it was over, buckles undone, feet back on the ground, hand slaps and embraces, waning exhilaration, and just a lingering pressure in my ears to remind that I just fell out of the sky. 6|&
