Life Of Ex-Juve Player 'No Longer In Danger'
(ANSA) - Turin, July 17 - Ex-Juventus player Gianluca Pessotto has been taken off the critical list after sustaining massive injuries in a suicide plunge last month, doctors said on Monday .
Pessotto's condition has see-sawed since his death leap, with doctors sometimes concerned that he might not make it .
Last week he was initially scheduled to watch Italy's World Cup triumph, but in the end had to be sedated and missed it - though he gave doctors a V-for-victory sign the following morning .
"Pessotto's life is no longer in danger," doctors said Monday, adding that he had been successfully weaned off a life-support machine and a breathing tube had been removed .
They said his recovery from his injuries "is proceeding favourably" .
The former Italy defender is to stay in intensive care for two weeks. Doctors couldn't say when Pessotto might be released from hospital .
Pessotto was rushed to Molinette hospital after he leapt off the roof of Juventus headquarters on June 27, shocking the nation and the soccer world as Italy made its bid for World Cup glory .
The 36-year-old former Juve and Italy defender suffered multiple fractures and other internal injuries when he bounced off a car at an estimated 60mph .
From the beginning doctors have said it would take a month or more to know how much permanent damage Pessotto suffered .
Pessotto has undergone surgery three times, first to set some bones and stop internal bleeding, and later to try and remove a blood clot which was endangering his life .
A model professional who gave his all on the pitch, Pessotto was held up as an example for youngsters. He collected 22 Italy caps, playing in the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 .
The defender still had one year to go on his contract when he accepted an offer to become Juve's sports director at the end of last season .
At the time, he said: "I'm happy about this. It will keep me in touch with the team and help me get used to not playing" .
Sources close to the family have admitted that he was in therapy for depression .
