World Cup-winner Marcello Lippi has returned to coach the Italian national team, replacing Roberto Donadoni.

The 60-year-old's return was announced just hours after the sacking of Donadoni following Italy's exit from Euro 2008.

Lippi became a national hero when he guided the Azzurri to glory at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. He left his post shortly afterwards and has not coached since.

He will be officially presented next Tuesday, July 1, at a press conference in Rome.

Lippi is one of the most successful coaches in Italian history, winning five Serie A titles and the 1996 Champions League with Juventus. Internazionale and Napoli also feature among his former clubs.

The Italian FA decided not to renew Donadoni's contract after Italy lost Sunday's quarter-final against Spain on penalties.

A statement read: "The Federation considers the contractual relationship with Roberto Donadoni to have run out at its natural expiry date."

Italy did not have to formally dismiss the 44-year-old as the two-year contract extension he signed just before the tournament was conditional on Italy reaching the semi-finals.

"Today president (Giancarlo) Abete received national team coach Roberto Donadoni at the FA's offices to assess the work done over the last two years and the performance at the European championship," the statement continued.

"In confirming his appreciation for the seriousness and skilled professionalism that distinguished his work at the helm of the national team, president Abete also informed the coach of the decision."

Donadoni, who took charge in July 2006 after the World Cup triumph in Germany, paid the price for the Azzurri's tired and uninspiring showing at Euro 2008, where they won just one game from four.

"I'm sorry that a penalty has determined this situation," the former Italy and Milan midfielder said after being informed of the decision.

"In these two years my Italy team have done something positive. One match cannot wipe that out."

* After a modest playing career with Savona, Sampdoria and Pistoiese, Lippi began coaching in 1982 with Sampdoria's youth team. He worked his way through the lower divisions before arriving in Serie A in 1989 at the helm of Cesena.

* Spells with Lucchese and Atalanta followed before his breakthrough in the 1993-94 season, when he led a Napoli side still smarting from the departure of Diego Maradona to a UEFA Cup place. The following season he was snapped up by Juventus, the start of a five-year reign during which he won three Serie A titles and the 1996 Champions League.

* In 1999 Lippi moved on to Inter Milan. The club had not won the Serie A title since 1989 and his season there was the only failure on his CV. After watching Inter lose to Reggina in the first game of the 2000-01 season, a furious Lippi said his players needed "a kick up the arse". He resigned days later.

* A year out of work ended in July 2001 when he was recalled to Juventus. His second stint in Turin was almost as successful as his first - the club won two Serie A titles and finished runner-up to AC Milan after a penalty shoot-out in the 2003 Champions League final.

* Italy's group stage exit in Euro 2004 opened the way for Lippi to take over from Giovanni Trapattoni as coach of the Azzurri. His appointment was not universally popular with fans, many of whom associated him with Juventus. A 2-0 defeat on his debut by Iceland was hardly the ideal start but Italy qualified for the World Cup with a game to spare, the first time they had done so since qualifying for the 1982 tournament.

* After Italy's pre-World Cup wins over the Netherlands and Germany, Lippi was hailed as a tactical genius. Shortly before the start of the World Cup his son, Davide, was questioned by magistrates in Rome investigating sports agency GEA World. Briefly, it seemed Lippi might be forced to step down in the cull of leading officials touched by a match-fixing scandal. After receiving a vote of confidence from Italian Football Federation commissioner Guido Rossi, Lippi kept his job, leading Italy through a shaky start to victory in Berlin.

* Four days after beating France in the World Cup final, Lippi announced that he would not renew his contract with Italy, saying he wanted to take a sabbatical from management. He has not managed a team since, and reportedly turned down offers to take charge of Mexico and Juventus.

Italy coach Roberto Donadoni has lost his job after the world champions failed to each the Euro 2008 semi-finals.

The Italian football federation (FIGC) decided not to renew Donadoni's contract after Italy lost Sunday's quarter-final against Spain on penalties.

A statement on the FIGC's official website read: "The Federation considers the contractual relationship with Roberto Donadoni to have run out at its natural expiry date."

Donadoni was informed of the decision following a meeting with FIGC officials in

Rome, during which the Azzurri's performance over the past two years was analysed.

The statement added: "Donadoni's professionalism has been much appreciated and we acknowledge his hard work when in charge of the national team."

FIGC president Giancarlo Abete said the FIGC considered his contract to have come to a natural end.

According to media, the FIGC is expected to announce the return of Donadoni's predecessor, 2006 World Cup-winning boss Marcello Lippi, early next week.

Sorry, I know it's not the best source, but I'm from the US and YahooSports is kind of the only news source I've been relying on for these games (I know, lame excuse haha). Anyway, even if there is a lot of anti-Donadoni sentiment out there, it's still a little saddening to see him lose his job even under these circumstances. I don't know. Thoughts?

BADEN, Austria (AFP) - Defiant Italy boss Roberto Donadoni ruled out quitting the national team despite his country's insipid Euro 2008 exit on penalties to Spain.

The world champions' rollercoaster tournament ended at the quarter-final stage but 44-year-old Donadoni has come under fire for the team's negative tactics and far from inspirational play.

They were thrashed 3-0 by the Netherlands in their opening game before being held to a 1-1 draw by Romania - although only a late penalty save by Gianluigi Buffon earned them that result.

Italy qualified for the last eight by beating France 2-0 but their opponents had to play three quarters of the game with 10 men after Eric Abidal's sending off.

Without playmaker Andrea Pirlo, who was suspended against Spain, and captain Fabio Cannavaro - the heart of the team - Italy were bereft of creativity and fight, surrendering meekly after a turgid 120 minutes of football and some poor penalties in the shoot-out.

The press speculated on Monday morning that Donadoni will be shown the door but when asked if he will jump first, he was adamant.

"Resign? The thought would never even enter the antechamber of my brain," said Donadoni.

"It's not because of a missed penalty that I'm going to change my opinion of our European Championships, that would be stupid."

Despite his conviction that he won't quit, Donadoni's time looks numbered with many newspapers speculating that World Cup winning boss Marcelo Lippi is set to make a comeback.

And after the Spain defeat, Italian Federation (FIGC) president Giancarlo Abete refused to publicly back his coach.

"It's positive in terms of the quality of the group of players and I'm pleased with the great bond created in the group but we are aware that our overall capacity and skills have certainly not reached the level that we expected," he said.

And when pressed on what Abete had told him personally, Donadoni was not particularly forthcoming with revealing information.

"Just one hour ago at breakfast I spoke with president Abete. I simply told him I was happy to have experienced these two years," he said.

Donadoni took over the post after Lippi resigned following Italy's 2006 World Cup victory in Germany.

Donadoni was given only a two-year contract leading to much speculation even before this tournament began that unless the team went far he would not be offered a new deal.

He turned down a conditional offer, based on reaching at least the semi-finals, but eventually signed a new two-year deal just days before the tournament began.

However, a contract in Italy is no guarantee of remaining in employment and when asked if he thought he deserved to remain in the job, Donadoni preferred not to proffer a reply.

"With respect to those who should decide I'm not going to try to sway them. My record speaks for itself, I'm not going to try to talk it up."

Donadoni admitted that he could do nothing about the speculation or even the clamour for the return of the popular Lippi.

"Seriously you've been writing about his return for two weeks," he told journalists at a press conference in Italy's base near Vienna.

"Hence since I arrived here I decided not to read the comments, neither the positive nor the negative ones."

Buffon’s Wife: Cannavaro & Borriello Are The Sexiest

Gianluigi Buffon’s wife has revealed who the sexiest two players are in the Italian national team – and no her husband is not one of them – the pin-ups in question are Fabio Cannavaro and Marco Borriello.

Beauty queen Seredova, who was the Vice Miss Czech Republic in 1998, is married to Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, but it seems she still has an eye for some of the other members on the Azzurri team.

"I am a great supporter and I follow the national team with my father,” Seredova said in an interview on the Alfonso Signorini Show.

“I get emotional with every save Gigi makes, but a woman must admit that the two sexiest players in the national team are on the bench,” she grinned before clearly referring to Fabio Cannavaro and Marco Borriello.

Seredova, who gave birth to Buffon’s first child, a boy named Louis Thomas, last Decemeber, says that all the wives and girlfriends (WAG’s) of the Italy team will be in Austria and Switzerland to support their other halves.

"In Vienna there will be all the clans of wives, the partners of Camoranesi, Materazzi, Gattuso, but also the new arrivals of Borriello and Barzagli.”

Panucci limps out of Italy training

BADEN, Austria (AFP) — Italy suffered a second defensive injury scare on Friday when veteran full-back Christian Panucci limped out of training here with a suspected knee injury.

Coming just four days after captain and centre-back Fabio Cannavaro was ruled out of the tournament with ankle ligament damage, a second loss to the backline would be a severe blow for the world champions.

Italy were playing a two-touch game in a confined space when Panucci went down all on his own, without any contact from another player.

Italy play their first match on Monday against the Netherlands in Berne.

Italy's director of communications Antonello Valentini said Panucci had felt a pain his knee and left the training session as a precaution.

Cannavaro Officially Out Of Euros

The Italian FA have confirmed the bad news all Azzurri fans were fearing: captain Fabio Cannavaro's injury rules him out of Euro 2008.

This afternoon World Cup winning captain Fabio Cannavaro suffered a knock to his ankle after a clash with Juventus hardman Giorgio Chiellini during Italy's training session. After staying on the ground for a while, he was taken off on a stretcher and then to a hospital.

Tests confirmed that the injury is serious and the player will probably have to be operated. More tests will be made in the next 48 hours to ascertain the entity of the injury, but one thing is for sure: he will not be able to take part to Euro 2008.

The name of his replacement will be announced in the next few hours by coach Roberto Donadoni. Most probably it will be Fiorentina's Alessandro Gamberini, also a central defender.

Right after the examinations, Italian journalists awaited Cannavaro, who told them: "I'm going home," with a melancholic smile on his face.
