A/N: I actually really felt sorry for Miki while writing this...

“It’s over.”, Xabi said not looking directly into Mikel’s eyes, instead he stared on the TV screen where two teams, Xabi couldn’t recall which ones (He hadn’t payed attention, had been too far away with his thoughts), were playing football.

“Yeah.”, Mikel replied snuggling closer to his boyfriend, “But they’re swapping trikots now, always worth watching don’t you think?”

“What?”, Xabi blinked irritated at the younger man not getting what Mikel was talking about.

“Oh come on, Xabi! Admit it! You love the trikot swapping after the matches are over. Everyone loves it! Well, okay, perhaps not everyone, but...”

“Mikel!”, Xabi cut him off looking sadly at his best friend, his boyfriend for so many years now. He could remember the day they had gotten together like it had been yesterday.

The awkward silence, this sloppy open-mouthed kiss and then awkward silence again. The kiss hadn’t been great at all, there had been no fireworks, just too much tongue and too much teeth. The first kiss of a sixteen-year-old and a fifteen-year-old boy, both unexperienced and uncertain. By and by they had gotten better and at the age of 22 Xabi thought of himself as quite a good kisser.

“I Don’t mean the match!”, he continued not able to look into Miki queryingly eyes, “It’s over. This thing between us, our relationship.”

Silence.

Both couldn’t quite believe what had happened. Xabi, that he had actually managed to say those words. Mikel, that Xabi had just ended their relationship. It was a joke, right? It had to be a joke!

“You... You’re kidding me, right? You aren’t being serious, are you?”

“I’m sorry, Miki, so, so sorry. But it has to be!”, Xabi tried to explain knowing exactly, that Mikel wouldn’t listen. He knew him, knew him his whole life and this wasn’t going to be easy. Not that Xabi had expected it to be anyway.

Mikel pushed himself away from Xabi glaring furiously at him. “No!”, he shouted, “It doesn’t ‘has to be’! I won’t accept that, Xabi!”

“But you have to.”, Xabi replied as calm as possible, “I’m ending this and there is no way you could put me off doing this.”

“But... but why?”, Mikel stuttered with tears in his eyes.

“It’s just...”, Xabi trailed of, sighing desperately, “I can’t do this! I’m moving to Liverpool soon and I just don’t think we can make this work. I’m so sorry, Miki. I love you, but...”

“But what?”, shouted Mikel angrily, “Dammit Xabi! We are together for six years now! What makes you think we can’t make this work?”

“I... I don’t know. It’s just... a feeling.”, Xabi answered an it was the truth. He loved Miki with all his heart or otherwise their relationship wouldn’t have lasted six years. But then, after he had decided to accept Liverpool’s offer, there had been this... feeling. Everytime he had woken up next to Mikel it had been there, everytime he had fallen asleep next to Mikel it had been there.

He had tried to ignore it but it had gotten stronger and stronger. Until it had overwhelmed him. He couldn’t explain this feeling, it wasn’t possible but he couldn’t deny its existence. It was the right decision to end things with Mikel, Xabi was sure.

When Mikel had played for Glasgow things hadn’t gone very well between them. First they had called each other every single day, then the calls had become less and less until they had almost lost contact completely.

With Mikel’s return to San Sebastián it had gotten better again but Xabi knew his move to Liverpool would have a similar effect on their relationship like Mikel’s move to Glasgow had.

“It’s a feeling...”, Mikel repeated disbelieving, “A FEELING?! You are ending things with me because of a stupid FEELING?”

“It’s not a stupid feeling, Miki. Please, you have to understand me! I don’t want the same thing to happen like when you went to Glasgow!”, Xabi defended himself.

“But it’s not going to be like Glasgow! We can do better this time!”, Mikel tried to convince Xabi, “Please, don’t leave me, Xabi.”

“I’m sorry, but... I have to. It’s for our best. You’ll always be in my heart, Miki. I... I should go now... Have to pack my things and... goodbye Miki.” Xabi rushed out of the door leaving a crushed and heartbroken Mikel Arteta behind. But he just couldn’t cry.

A few months later

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

The doorbell rang and Mikel opened the door not expecting any visitors and least of all this visitor. “X-Xabi?”, he stuttered staring shocked at his former boyfriend.

“Hey Miki.”, Xabi smiled shyly at him, “Can I come in? I need to talk to you, it’s important.”

Mikel stepped aside feeling numb. Xabi wanted to talk to him? It was important? Mikel felt hope building up inside of him. Xabi wanted him back! He had finally come to sense again and had realised that he couldn’t live without Mikel.

Mikel led him into the living-room and offered a place on the couch but Xabi preferred to stand. “Congratulations to your first Champions League title, Xabi.”, Mikel said smiling but Xabi didn’t return the smile, making Mikel feel a bit uncomfortable. If he wanted him back then why was he acting like this? Perhaps Xabi just was afraid that Mikel would reject him. Yes, that was the reason, Xabi feared a rejection. But Mikel could never do this. He loved Xabi too much.

“So what is it you wanted to tell me?”, he asked after a while.

“Well, I...”, Xabi looked down at his feet and Mikel smiled even wider. Xabi was so cute when he was shy like this.

“Just spit it out!”, Mikel encouraged his soon-to-be boyfriend for the second time.

Xabi swallowed hard. “I have a new boyfriend, Miki.”

BAM. This confession made a splash.

A new boyfriend. Three words Mikel had feared so much. A new boyfriend. His mouth suddenly felt terrible dry. Xabi didn’t want him back, he had met someone new. All his hopes were dashed, his heart shattered into pieces once again.

“Who?”, he finally managed to say, although he was sure he didn’t really wnat to know it.

“Stevie.”, Xabi replied, “Stevie Gerrard.”

Mikel nodded. Just nodded. He didn’t care that Steven Gerrard had a girlfriend, he didn’t care that Steven Gerrard had a little daughter. Something inside of him was broken into pieces and there was nothing to mend it again.

“I really love him, Miki, he means the world to me.”, Xabi told him not knowing that he hurt Mikel more and more by saying these things.

“Well then... I’m happy for you, Xabi. Really.”, Mikel croaked trying to get rid of the lump in his throat. Xabi beamed at him and gave him a quick kiss on his cheek, killing Mikel even more.

“Thank you so much, Miki. I knew you would understand it!”, Xabi whispered and squeezed his hand. “I have to go now, I’m meeting with my parents. You know, Miki, you and Stevie just have to meet each other some day! You’d love him!”

Then Xabi was away.

Mikel sank to the floor, completely broken. And then, finally, he started to cry.
