About
Welcome to Foodie Haven, a community devoted to writing about and discussing every foodie's favorite topic: Food!

This community is all about lovingly written...well, anything, as long as it's about food. Poetry, prose, long or short: it's all welcome. Whether it be a poem about the first tomato from the garden, still warm from the sun, or a review of a sixteen course Chinese banquet experienced at the Lunar New Year, or (as one regular member so aptly put it), a "this is what I made, this is how I made it, yum!" quickie. Come here to write about your brilliant lemon bars, your shiny new All-Clad pans, that great bottle of wine you had at dinner last night, or the secret recipe for southern fried chicken you snuck out of your Great Aunt Edwina's cookbook. Did you have a great meal at a local restaurant? Write us a review! From soul food to haute cuisine, from fusion to ethnic, from your favorite tea to the joys of Le Creuset, we want to read about it all.

The common theme here at Foodie Haven is quality:
qual·i·ty (kwŏl'ĭ-tē) adj.: Having a high degree of excellence.
We want quality in our food, quality in our equipment, and, yes, even quality in our writing. We're not here to be elitist, we just want the good stuff. And since quality transcends all, don't think we're only here for gourmet food. Not at all. Whether it's about blackeyed peas and cornbread or Lobster Thermidore, bring it all on.

Content posted to Foodie Haven should be of good quality as well. We love good writing as much as we love good food. In fact, good food and good writing is a marriage of true minds, and we're not here to admit to them any impediments.

It's probably easier to say what this community isn't about than it is to list everything that is acceptable. So here's a brief list of things that are better sought elsewhere:
  • Recipe requests. While you'll see lots of recipes posted, described, dissected, and discussed here at Foodie Haven, it's not really a community devoted to the search for recipes. If you're looking for a particular recipe or what to do with a particular ingredient, try [info]recipe_exchange, [info]recipe_swap, [info]recipe_traders, searching livejournal interests for communites that are about recipes, or try epicurious, recipezaar, food.com, or google.
  • Techniques and "how-tos." Again, you'll see lots of posts about techniques, some of them quite basic, such as a scientific explanation of whipping egg whites or how to properly cook dried beans. If you're looking for help on how to use a new piece of equipment, how to do something in particular, or how to use an ingredient that's new to you, feel free to look through the community memories or keywords to see if someone has already covered it. If you don't find what you're looking for, try asking for help in [info]food_porn. (And once you're done, write about your experience and post it here!)
  • Pictures of food. You will find pictures posted here at Foodie Haven, but here we're more about writing about food than we are about looking at it. If you want to post pictures with little or no prose, there are other communities devoted to that, such as [info]omgfood, [info]foodphotos, and [info]foodpics. Pictures are welcome here, of course, if you want to illustrate what you're writing about. Just let quality be your watchword: make sure your pictures are clear, well-lit, and show your subject to its best advantage.
Here are the basic guidelines for this community:
  • All graphics and photos must be behind an lj-cut tag. Yes, even that one.
  • Foodie Haven is about original content that is posted to the community, not somewhere else.
    • Please don't use the community as an advertising service to say when you've posted content elsewhere.
    • No crossposting to other communities, please, although you may of course cross-post to your own journal. If you do cross-post to your own journal, we suggest as a courtesy to your friends that you note when you do so.
    • Please properly attribute any quotes and copyrighted material that you use in your posts.
  • Please do not advertise your community, blog or journal, either in posts or in comments, without the express permission of your Friendly Neighborhood Moderator.
  • Long posts (say, anything over 300 words or larger in layout than 100 lines of text) should also be behind an lj-cut tag.
  • No "fake lj-cuts" please. Be honest when you're posting a link that refers someone out of the community.
  • Any content that is Not Safe For Work should be clearly labeled and placed behind an lj-cut tag. (Remember, some community members peruse this community from work. We don't want to get them in trouble.)
  • This is a new community, and it has some growing to do. These rules will be in flux for some time.
