My family has a problem - none of us like blood oranges. We all find them to be a bizarre combination of tart and bland. Yet foodies all over seem to adore them. What are we doing wrong?

The logical answer would be to just give up on the damn things, they're not our taste etc., etc., however we just got a large bag of them from our co-op.

Please, please help us discover the joys of the blood orange!

The first blood orange I ever ate I bought from a vendor in the Roman forum. I sat on the floor of what used to be Caesar's villa and savoured it, allowing the red juices to drip over my hands onto the white marble slab beneath me. It was divine.

Try that.

Send them to me!

They shouldn't be bland. Are they the size of tangerines, or larger like grocery store navels? I think the bigger ones are hybrids with navel oranges and those are nowhere near as good as the real ones.

What color are the skins? If they are plain orange, then that's probably where the problem comes from: the more time the fruit spent in the sun, the redder the peel and the more flavorful.

There are other blood orange entries in the community if you need ideas, but generally (having posted a similar plea a few months ago) they are good in drinks and as garnishes. I find them tasty in salads as well.

On the other hand, if you don't like them, you don't like them. You're no less a foodie for not liking something: I have chef friends who find blood oranges absolutely vile. So if they aren't your thing, stop buying them! :)

I like them, but I definitely prefer a good tangerine over a blood orange. I second the drink (blood orange martinis and margaritas seem to be popular) and salad suggestions.

I'm tempted to reduce the juice to a syrup that makes the best of the color and flavor...

Besides making sure you get good oranges with red skin, I'd also suggest sectioning it (as illustrated here) to remove all the pith, which I find especially bitter in blood oranges.

I don't think they're amazing all the time, but I am a bit addicted to this blood orange soda they sell at Trader Joe's, and at dinner the other night I had a Muscovy Leg of Duck that had a blood orange reduction that you were supposed to dip the duck into. SO. GOOD.

Yeah blood orange soda is to die for. It's become very popular, they carry it at Wegman's and Giant carries a brand of it, too...

My blood orange experiences: in salad as a component, and in sorbet. One was a sorbet made with rosemary-infused simple sugar syrup, the other was made with champagne. Both were excellent!

Make marmalade and give it away. The skins have a bitterness that is an advantage in marmalade and the color will be AWESOME.

Emeril picked some of these up last night from the market to make a dressing for a salad.

Maybe research last nights episode to find out the recipe.

I've always found them to be intensely flavorful and complex...perhaps I'm just getting better ones in my area? It seems as though when I buy regular oranges, at least half of them are duds (watery, fibrous, bland) so maybe it is the same with bloods. Oh how I love them.

eh, I don't love blood oranges. They're like a flavorless cross between a navel and a grapefruit.
