'Fire meat', aka bulgogi

Bulgogi (Korean sweet soy marinated beef) is one of the most popular Korean dishes around, as well as being one of the most versatile. It can be cooked up and served alongside rice and 'banchan' (side dishes), or can be cooked WITH veggies or 'dang myun' (sweet potato cellophane noodles - different from regular cellophane noodles) or even served in the style of a lettuce wrap!

And please, please please please, do NOT buy that instant bottled sauce I've seen them selling in supermarkets - a friend proudly served it to me once and the only thing I could do next was show her my mother's recipe and how easy it was to make, especially when the end product tastes better than that bottled stuff!

this stuff is like crack to me. i prefer it with rice and banchan because i like all the different flavors and mixing and matching what i want my next bite to taste like :) but i've also had it with dang myun in a broth and it was quiiiite good.

Hehe, you sound like my kid brother :) It's one of his few food weaknesses! Dang myun and bulgogi are great, you should try adding boiled dang myun to the pan when frying your next batch of bulgogi, it absorbs the sauce and goes all soft and super tasty!

Thanks so much for this recipe! The best Korean place in town also has some of the best sushi in town, and since I don't get to go that often it's always a struggle to decide what to order. Now I can make bulgogi at home and get sushi out. =)

My pleasure! I hope you give it a try - I'd love to hear what you think of it :)

One question... the bulgogi I've gotten out has a bit of heat to it... not a lot, but some, and it has little red flecks in it. Do you suppose that's some non-authentic crushed red pepper flakes? I don't think it's hot enough to be Thai red bird chiles.

Well, I doubt it's anything other than gochugaru (Korean crushed red pepper) which isn't that bad, but to be honest, we've never added it to ours nor have I seen it added to bulgogi when I've eaten at other people's houses or at Korean restaurants here... :/ it might be a regional difference thing, I'll have to check with my mother in the morning

Thanks! I think I'll toss in a bit of our crushed red pepper flakes, then. The husband's criteria for judging homecooked food is, "Does it taste like the restaurant version?" so I try to accommodate that when I can.

The meat is marinating in the fridge right now; looking forward to dinner!

I love bulgogi with rice and banchan, too, and I always make it from scratch. The ingredients area always in my pantry anyway, so why buy bottled sauce? (It never tastes as fresh with bottled sauce anyway.)

That is a very pretty picture, btw.

I'm dead set against all those 'instant'/convenience sauces they sell in the supermarkets...from my experience, they're always just half-hearted imposters of the real flavours and give people inaccurate ideas of what dishes should taste like! I'm glad to hear that you're one of those people who makes their own :)

(drools) Oh gosh, I haven't had some good bulgogi for at least a couple of months now. Mmm....

Maybe I can talk the boyfriend into making me some this weekend. (plots with new recipe in hand)

Aww, thanks for the lovely words :) I've never heard anyone say that they don't enjoy this dish so I think it's just one of those universally loved ones :D If you do try the recipe, I hope you let me know - I'd love to hear what you thought of it :)

I surprised my boyfriend with this last night, and he loved it! So did I. I served it with rice and baby bok choi. I'll probably have some of the leftovers for lunch today. Thanks for a great recipe!
