beef stew
I am currently working as a manager at Wendy's, so by the time that I get home from work, I either a) don't feel like cooking or b) it's too late to cook anyway... currently I've been doing the closing shifts, so I'm not getting home till 1, 2 in the morning, sometimes later.

But, recently I've been missing cooking, and been trying to get back into it. And luckily, today I had the day off- so I decided to try and tackle my boyfriend's dad's humbly called "World Famous Beef Stew."

Browning beef that had been coated in flour, salt and pepper... I ended up spraying flour everywhere when i dropped the first batch of beef into the pile.

Other than the dumplings that come later, this seems to be a pretty basic beef stew recipe- onions, carrots, green beans and then the beef. Spices included garlic and onion salt, beef bouillon cubes and browning sauce, which is something I have never heard of or seen before.

strange new ingredient that I've never used before...

Chopped onions and carrots awaiting their trip into the pot.

Everything in the pot, happily simmering away

The dumpling dough... jiffy mix, cheddar cheese and milk. Again, pretty basic but really, really good.

The finished product. Scared the crap out of me when I first opened up the pot cause it looked like the dumplings hadn't set, but I tested it and they were fine.

I've only had this once, and I remember that I fell in love with it. The thing that really won me over was the dumplings that go in the stew- they're slightly chewy and cheesy and go really well with all the other flavors. I've eaten 2 bowls of this stuff already.

And this is the spoon rest that my mom got me for Christmas. Yes, my mom has a warped sense
of humor.

When I was a young bride in the early 80s, the gal that lived downstairs was an old hippie that seemingly knew how to cook. She was my 'go to' whenever I had questions and didn't want to get stuck on the phone w my mother for thirty minutes.

One day she brought up a bottle of Kitchen Bouquet. I thought it was just the greatest invention! Made everything brown and salty good.

Well, that was 20+ years ago (yea, I'm dating myself) and I haven't used it since. I guess it's just as easy for me to actually brown the meat myself and add seasoning to it ...

But I have great memories of her and her KB - that always seemed to come upstairs w other kinds of hippie goodness ;)
