Yesterday I tried something new. Since being diagnosed as celiac, I find myself trying more new things and most of the time from scratch.
Even the most dull to most is exciting to me at this point in the game.
For example, I have never had porcupine meatballs. So yesterday I made them but I substituted more than half the rice with black forbidden rice. I also made a sweet and sour sauce to go with it instead of the usual tomato sauce I kept finding in most recipes.

The recipe

PORCUPINE SWEET AND SOUR MEATBALLS

1 1/2 lb. ground beef
1/2 cup finely chopped onion
3 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 cup raw rice
1 egg
salt and pepper, to taste
2 cups beef broth
20 oz. can pineapple chunks
1 tbsp. corn starch
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup vinegar
1 tablespoon soy sauce

Combine ground beef, onion, garlic, rice, egg and salt and pepper in bowl. Shape into medium sized meatballs and place in Dutch oven. Add beef broth and simmer over low heat (do not boil) until done for about 75 minutes, skimming off any fat which rises to the surface while cooking.

Drain syrup from the pineapple and set aside. Combine corn starch and brown sugar in a saucepan. Add syrup, vinegar and soy sauce. Bring to a boil and reduce heat. Cook over medium-low heat until thick and syrupy.

Pour sauce over meatballs and carefully stir in the pineapple. Simmer 10 minutes.

Those actually look rather artistic - porcupine meatballs all dressed up!

I've never had forbidden rice, though I've seen it in the store and thought about buying it - whats the flavor/texture like in comparison to standard white or brown rice?

It has a little more texture than regular rices. I find it's comparable to the sweet smell of basmati but it is shaped differently. It's squat like risoto.

Mostly it is just beautiful. I have had it in rice pudding before and that is my favorite way to eat it.
It has more protein and iron compared to regular rice which is why I wanted to try it.

Using the forbidden rice just makes the name so much more fun.

Ooh! Using turkey or lean beef, I could easily make these pretty healthy. They look nifty, too, and I think that the name "Forbidden Porcupine Meatballs" is AWESOME.

Since my family's been serving procupine meatballs for three generations, I could do with a little change. And serving these to my mom would be kinda "forbidden." Thanks! I'm looking forward to trying it!

Regular soy sauce has wheat in it. Did you sub with wheat-free?

Yep, it's like a mine field out there. I don't have celiac myself, but I have friends who are for whom I cook, and it's been quite an education. It's freakin' everywhere.

Did you find it in iced tea yet? That one really stumped me.

In ice tea?
Oh for goodness sake.
I usually make my own so I had not seen it. May I ask which brands you found?
