Long-time lurker, in need of some assistance.

In true Spurlock-style, I've decided to forgo meat for the month of March.  I've done a reasonable amount of research on vegetarianism in the past, so I'm not entirely green on the subject.  However, I know there are a lot of vegetarians in this community, so I thought I'd come to you lovely folks for any and all advice and/or recipes you think I should have.

Thanks in advance!

Does anyone know of a pre-made frozen VEGAN croissant? Like the crescent roll type thing, only vegan? I'm trying desperately to figure out a solution to make croissants vegan, and I have to make a LOT of them so I don't have enough time to make them from scratch...

Please let me know if you have any ideas! Thanks!

A Pasty Conundrum

  • Mar. 1st, 2007 at 12:16 PM
About 5 years ago there was this Irish restaurant in my town that my now-fiance and I frequented, well, frequently. It was fantiastic! Mainly because while it was indeed a bar with an Irish name, unlike most of their kin, they actually served food from the UK, and it was really good! Most Irish pubs are Irish in name alone, playing into the stereotype of the "drunken Irish," but this was really good food.

My plea begins as follows: Whenever I wanted to treat myself, I'd splurge and spend the extra money on a Cornish Pasty. It was like sex... a flaky, buttery crust, vegetables, and meat. On a plate with crispy steak fries, and served with a sort of au jus... but I can't for the life of me remember what this pasty was made of! Was it pork? Beef? Was the meat ground or cubed? Was there a sauce on the inside a la pot pie? Now that I think of it, I don't think so, because I remember veggies falling out of the pastry one it was cut into, and I'd use the au jus to keep everything inside.

The restaurant has since closed, and reopened as a Mexican place... so I have no way of figuring this out easily. I will need to experiment.

So...

If you have a delicious recipe for a Cornish pasty, please share it! I would be forever grateful if I could figure this out! Thanks in advance!

Sushi Jokes/Puns?

  • Mar. 1st, 2007 at 4:49 PM
I'm in the process of making a set of sushi icons, and I wanted the wording to all be those silly little sushi puns... unfortunately, I'm running out of them (and so quickly, too...).  I used to work at a Pier1 Imports and I know that they had a 2006 calendar of sushi puns, but I can't remember them for the life of me.  I guess this isn't really food porn, but I was hoping that you all could help me out by contributing your favorites!

Examples (and by that I mean, the ones I've used so far):

"Wassap, b?" [Wasabi]
"Maki me one while you're at it."
"Miso hot!"
"Let me see that sushi roll"
"Don't you ig-nori me."
"Rollin' wit my sushiz."

I know there were some really cute ones on that calendar, but I'm looking for anything...

Thank you all so much!

I gave up all meats for Lent so finding meatless quick access foods (read: munchies) while on shift became of of my goals for this year.

However, reading the backs of some of these snack bags like Doritos, Lays, etc, I'm wondering how to tell if the stuff has been cooked in animal fat, has meat in it, etc.  Sure, bacon flavored may actually have *meat* in it (big clue).  But if something is BBQ flavored, does that mean it has meat in it or what?  Also, is there some sort of master table of snack foods that I can see which ones have the best (yes, I know that's funny) nutritional facts?

I don't plan on going totally vegetarian.  But if it is just flavoring that I like on my veggietables and not the actual meat,  that would go a long way to cutting down my meat intake for the rest of the year.  I'd also like to know where to find legitimate information on health for vegetarians, whether or not the iron or vitamin E issues due to lack of meat are real or balderdash?

And for bonus points: How can you make cheese pizza taste like pepperoni pizza without the pepperoni or meat?  I heard it is some sort of blend of cheeses or spice?

Thank you!

Not only am I new to this community, but I've also never posted to a community before! How can that be?

I went dairy-free a month ago, as recommended by my boss (a naturopath). His wife gave me this outstanding recipe.
