Panko Bread Crumbs

  • Feb. 11th, 2007 at 12:22 AM
Hi. My in-laws are in town and they bought us a bunch of stuff at Trader Joe's to accompany a family recipe collection they brought is from Mississippi. My man's mom also randomly bought is panko bread crumbs. I'm an amateur cook but I follow directions well, etc.

Long story longer: any favourite uses for Panko Crumbs?

Suggestions would be great. Thank you!

Arroz chaufa de pollo (Peruvian fried rice)

  • Feb. 11th, 2007 at 10:51 AM
In my search for authentic-ish Mexican food in Georgia, I ended up at a Mexican/Peruvian restaurant. I ordered arroz chaufa de pollo and it was beyond excellent - I was absolutely addicted and convinced I could live off this stuff. So I'm looking for a recipe so I can make it at home! All of the recipes online are in Spanish and, well, I don't speak Spanish. If it turns out well I'll post pictures here.

Black Bean Soup

  • Feb. 11th, 2007 at 2:40 PM

My soon to be Mother-in-Law (from the south) gave us a book of recipes she's been putting together for us. They are mostly family recipes or recipes their family has enjoyed for a long time. I want to work my way through it and try as many as possible. I started off easy today with a black bean soup.

i'm going to make red beans and rice for dinner tonight but because there were no ham hocks when i went to the market, i decided to substitute a cut-up ham steak. however, i was wondering when i should add it? i normally add the andouille sausage towards the end of the cooking so should i add the ham steak then or at the beginning? or does it matter?

thanks!

Thin pork chop recipes?

  • Feb. 11th, 2007 at 3:53 PM
Hello all! I'm here on behalf of my boyfriend who is looking for suggestions as to how best to cook some pork chops he got the other day. They're too thin to stuff, which was my first suggestion. Any recipes are definitely welcome. Thanks in advance!

Gluten/Wheat Free Cooking Spray

  • Feb. 11th, 2007 at 3:56 PM
So my husband is staying at his best friends place while working in Seattle this week.  His best friend has an intense allergy to gluten/wheat.  I'm going to make them some brownies from a mix that I just got at the store.  I'm too nervous to make them from scratch and mess up something and make him sick.  They'll be delivered Wednesday :o)

My question to you is the recipe on the back says to use a gluten-free cooking spray on the pan.  I couldn't find a gluten-free cooking spray.  The closest that I think I found was Mazola Pure (no alcohol, silicone, or fat).  Will this work?  Can I just use butter?

aww. he loves food as much as we do!

A teenager has had a full English breakfast tattooed on his head.

Dayne Gilbey, 19, was inked with bacon, eggs, sausages, beans and cutlery during the six-hour session.

Mr Gilbey, from Coventry, answered a plea from tattoo artist Blane Dickinson, who wanted a human canvas for the iconic dish.

The North Wales-based tattooist etched out the brightly-coloured design, which resembles a smiling face, at his local pub The Albion, in Conwy.

Mr Gilbey, who already has four tattoos, said: "My friends and family keep asking me why I'm doing this.

"For me it's just something different which has never been done before. My Mum is really unhappy about it and threatened to throw me out but I don't think she'll go through with it."

The tattoo design had widespread coverage in the media and Mr Gilbey said he was surprised to receive calls from Germany and Australia.

Mr Dickinson, 32, from Penmaenmawr, said: "I first had this idea four years ago so I'm glad to have finally found someone brave, or perhaps unhinged, enough to do it.

"I'm not charging Dayne but this tattoo would normally cost around £350 and must definitely be the most expensive breakfast he's ever had."

Mr Dickinson said his next project will involve a volunteer having their own face tattooed on the back of their head.

ok. i have been cooking almost 100% vegetarian/meat-free. but, as my bf pointed out to me the other night, we've been eating a lot of beans. sunday night dinners usually will include a meat (tonight, as my prior post suggested, i am making red beans and rice) but the other nights i have been trying for meat-free. anyway. i am looking for suggestions and recipes for meals that are bean-less as well as meat free. we do eat tofu, and i have seen something called tempeh called for in a few recipes but i am not familiar with that... also i am curious if all of this meat-less eating is normally high in sodium?

any and all help is much appreciated!
thanks in advance!

the meal of a lifetime

  • Feb. 11th, 2007 at 7:04 PM
BANGKOK, Thailand - It’s been billed as the “meal of a lifetime,” a 10-course dinner concocted by world-renowned chefs for the most discriminating palates and — at $25,000 a head — the fattest wallets.

(And that doesn’t include tax and gratuity.)

If I had that much money to spend on a meal, you can bet your sweet cookie I'd do it! Except I don't drink, so I'd probably be like "Um...could you swap out my wines for your most fabulous desserts, please?"
