This is gonna sound reeeeally stupid, but when you go to a place where you can order steak, what's usually the smallest size they have? I want to say 6 ounces, but I'm not sure.

Area is fictional but based loosely on Japan, if that makes a difference (hamburger is easily gotten, but I think we've only seen steak in fantasy sequences so I'm not sure). Price is no object, since they're at a fancy place anyway.

So a while ago, I posted asking about duck and leeks.

Someone put it together what I was planning on cooking up. Hahaha yes.

Anyway, fandom revealed, I used that knowledge in a chapter I have of a character backstory. It was chapter 17, so if no one wants to root through the fic to understand what's going on, I'll quote the lunch part below (narrator character is canon, person he's with is an OC):

Links to some Food in Fics

Okay.  I have 3 links to Food in Fiction.  One I wrote myself and it is the fifth chapter of a fic.  One was written by a friend of mine,[info]virtualpersonal    as a gift for me, and one is the second chapter of a fic we collaborated on together.

These are all in the SPN Supernatural Fandom.

The first one is from a predominantly het fic, nc-17 featuring Dean Winchester and an OFC.  The chapter in question has warnings at the top but are het-kink-pegging-first time.  Here is the link for that:

Shot Through The Heart - Chapter 5A

The next one is the one that  [info]virtualpersonal   wrote it is a PG fic featuring Dean Winchester and the waitress Scarlett who is having rather impure thoughts just watching him eat.

For The Love Of Food - Dean

The third fic is one we collaborated on together and in Chapter 2 there is an eating scene.  This is Dean and Sam Winchester and is known in the SPN fandom as Wincest as it is the two brothers and they end up having an incestuous sexual relationship.  The overall fic is 4 chapters and is NC-17.

Wish A Little Wish - Part Two

So, if anyone wants to read  [info]food_in_fiction  , here are three links.  I tried to give appropriate warnings here because I don't want to freak anyone out and I know everything isn't for everybody.  There are also warnings at the tops of the chapters.

I hope this is okay.  It would be awesome if some other people posted links to chapters of their stories that feature food.  I'd love to read them.

Maybe a stupid question...

I joined this comm back when it was spotlighted on LJ.

It seems like people ask questions as they are writing fic, but I haven't really seen any posts that link the finished fic, or the chapter of the fic that involved food in fiction.

Isn't that the point?  You get help so that you make it a better food scenario, then when you actually write a food scenario you post it with appropriate warnings and include a link?  Because I haven't seen any links at least in the most 20 recent posts that someone actually posted a link to food in fiction.  That is what this comm is called, isn't it?

If I'm wrong, let me know.  If not, I'll include a link.  There would definitely be warnings as it is fanfic het nc-17 with a lot of sex in the second half of the chapter, but the one character cooks for the other while he sits and watches and they enjoy the meal before the sex stuff happens.  Is that kind of what the comm does?  People can then discuss if your food in fiction seemed realistic?  Or is it an all before the fic is written kind of comm?

EDIT-I didn't actually mean for the writing of the food to be critiqued.  Sorry it was late when I wrote this.  I just thought it would be interesting to see what people do with the food scenes in their fics.  I'd personally be interested in seeing finished fics or chapters that include food.

Take out food in Japan?

In this script I've started, the main character is stuck in his apartment for about three months (or perhaps two or five, since this is a rough work in progress). Rather than go outside, I reckoned that the extent of his self-inflicted isolation might also be emphasized if he ate delivered take out food more often than he should. Obviously, money is going to be an issue here, and although I'm not sure how expensive take out actually is in Japan, part of the story is that he's put a reasonable (if not neccessarily huge) dent in his bank account because of it and has gained some weight.

The character lives in Osaka, and thus I would like to know

Thanks in advance, everyone

In my ongoing story, the main character and another character will be traveling to Ireland. I have Irish heritage, but by no means any knowledge of the food there! So, if somebody could please fill me on what is the norm in Irish cusine, I'd be much obliged. They're going to be staying in Shannon.

Thanks in advance!

Hey, guys, it's me. Again.

Okay, so, I have this alien. He's not familiar with Earth food or food in general. He was fed through a tube, so. He's never eaten real food. But he wants to.

Question: What type of food would you want to try?

defrosting rates in a toaster oven

So thanks to the replies in my last post, I've decided that the kid is going to try to doctor up a frozen pizza with fish and sesame seeds.

But...um...I've no idea what that would do in a toaster oven. I'm thinking the frozen fish would make the pizza all oogy since it would defrost at a different rate, and the sesame seeds would burn. But short of actually doing it myself, I can't think of how to test this.

Also, if he were to force himself to eat this concoction, would he get violently ill? If so, what should I change to avoid this? I want him to just get kinda pissed at his limitations.

So I've got a character, nine years old, who's recently been exposed to the high-class world. His father is rich but doesn't live like it, and that's caused some anger.

Basically, this kid is going to try to make something classy for lunch out of what his father has in the kitchen. But the problem is that I have no idea what's in a "typical" kitchen (my family has some odd tastes), nor what a nine-year-old would be capable of that's simple (since he has no cooking experience).

I suppose most of that is character/story specific, but an outline of what a "typical" kitchen has in it would be awesome. For reference, in an earlier chapter it was mentioned that the family had had hot dogs and grilled cheese sandwiches for two nights, if that helps any.

The area is *based* on Japan, but isn't quite (the canon has influences from all over the world, but the basic land mass is supposed to be Japan-ish). Also it's the beginning of November, and the town is a medium-sized one on the ocean, about a two-hour drive from a major city.

and dammit, I need my "my fandom looks delicious" icon back, even though it was a different series

*waves* Hi! first-time poster. I joined with the masses, when this comm was spotlighted. XDD

Sooo, I was randomly clicking around on my library's website, and through a series of links I was recced this book:

*copypaste!!*

Secrets of the Red Lantern, by Pauline Nguyen with Luke Nguyen and Mark Jenson
Proprietor of the popular Vietnamese restaurant Red Lantern, Pauline tells the story of her family's journey from their home in Vietnam to Sydney's most vibrant Vietnamese community. In this intricate family saga, treasured recipes form the thread that bind the family together for life. Both a moving memoir and a dazzling collection of recipes and photos, this is a book to treasure.

I haven't actually read the book, so I can't vouch for anything it says, but I thought it was relevant?
FYI: the Sydney it refers to, is Sydney the largest (only just) city in Australia. =D
Oh, and in case anyone's interested, the original site I found it is here: http://www.booksalive.com.au/index.php/

Green Banana Porridge

Years ago I heard someone read an old poem about the casualties of war (I can't remember which European war it referred to).  The strange thing was that the poem somehow also included a recipe for ratatouille.  I thought that was an odd but effective idea, so here's my attempt on unseen casualties.

Fish Pedicures

Sort of to do with food. I thought that it could be useful for fantasy or sci fi novels.
A spa has started using 'doctor fish' to eat the dead skin off your feet- much better than the razors apparently, and much more hygienic and also fun. They have no teeth, and come from a place with not much food around so they learnt to suck food from where they can. And they leave live skin alone because they can't bite it off.

Cheese Idea!

Part of my story has to do with a young man taking a job in which he lies about so he can pay the bills. So he takes a job as a chef and his first assignment is a party in which the featured item is cheese. He barely knows what to cook but somehow manages to be able to accomplish the job.
Does anyone know of any really good cheeses and ideas for things for the party? I don't want to make the items too fancy but something quite complex.

Possible menu in Oregon/Washington-esque fantasy town

Hi all! I'm new, joined when this was featured, but since I'm something of a lazy bum, I haven't posted yet. I'm Saphy, mostly called Saphy unless you know me from somewhere where I'm not. I'm a ridiculously picky eater, and thus am almost always at a serious loss when it comes to including foodstuffs in the stories I write. I am therefore incredibly grateful that I found this site! :D When it comes to the knowledge I do have, again, pretty limited because of the pickiness thing, but if you need to know about food and such in Utah or the Netherlands, it's good odds that I can help. ^_^

Aaaaand I have a question. I am writing a fantasy story. The storyline involves Our Heroes traversing pretty much the entire world, and at the moment they are in a mountain city whose climate I have pegged as being similar to that of the US North-west. The city is by a very large lake (think Great Lakes sort of thing), and, again, high in the mountains. This is a volcanic region; the city and lake themselves both lie in the collapsed crater of a long, long extinct volcano, there is a new volcano off to the west, and there is still some geothermal activity around the city (hot springs, etc). Region is heavily forested for the most part. The mountains have an extensive river system. Technology level is fairly low; people use swords, bows, etc. Now, my question...

What sort of food would these people eat? What kind of food would be available from the surrounding area naturally, and what sort of crops would do well there? What kind of livestock? The only thing I've decided is that the town produces mead, and that it's pretty darn famous for it. Is that viable?

Thanks in advance!

Hello everybody! I hope July is starting out on a great foot for everyone.

A few things:

First, I am need of help. In a story I am working on, the main character lives in Maine, on the coast. Obviously, there's going to be seafood involved, but my question is what type of seafood is more popular than others, and are there any traditional Maine dishes? And aside from seafood, what is a popular meal? Beef over chicken, or veggies over meat period, soup, etc...?

Second, I'm from Utah, so if anybody needs help with western U.S. cuisine or the like, I'd be happy to help!

Thanks in advance for your help, guys!

Elizabethan Period

Hi, I guess I haven’t introduced myself yet. I’m Ashley, but most people call me Rojo. I joined this community when it was featured awhile back. Unfortunately, I’ve only been home one week in June, so haven’t been able to do much.

Anyway, I was curious about what kind of food was eaten in France when Elizabeth I ruled England. If anyone could help me with this, that would be great. Thanks!

ETA:
Class-wise, I'm think richer nobility and/or royalty. For location, near the sea and also in a large city, very simular to Paris. Hope this helps a little bit more.
