Irony alert-- AOL censors email criticizing plan to prioritize net access
Ah, it's amusing in the usual sick, pathetic way-- I'm too out of it to add any commentary, and really, the link says all that needs to be said.

duh.

corporations reserve the right to censor and edit any information across their networks.

it is akin to requiring Coke to put ads for Pepsi on their cans.

I have to deal with the whole give stuff away at less than cost so other companies can take our business away daily.

if you do not like it, do not use AOL.
I never have and I never will.

It's not about using AOL.

It's about AOL trying to hijack and cripple the thing that gives the internet value, the network effect.

If they want to treat their own pointy-headed lusers that way on their own network, they can, and they have. But if they want to be part of the larger network, they need to co-exist with and abide by the accepted standards of the rest of the network.

Ultimately, AOL has never proven to be the sharpest tool in the shed, and I suspect that this will backfire on them like other stupid things they've tried...but it will still cause a lot of aggravation and problems for other people in the process, if they decide to plunge ahead anyway.

They're really not even the first to dream this concept up-- it's a variation on a theme that has failed in the past. The telcos have started thinking about it too. But before they decide they get to be the ones to break the internet, I want my $2,000 back first.

last time I priced a DS-3 Muldem, they had come down from the initial 32k (installed) down to about 8k installed. that is still a shortfall of 6k.

I can give you a 45 meg connection today, if you want to pay for it. The problem is no one wants to pay for it and 2k will not even buy the fiber cable to get to your house let alone get it buried into the ground.

It is not the phone companies as much as it is the out of control Federal government and regulations piled on top of regulations.

20% of my day minimum is making sure I comply with federal and state regulations.

Not really. It's more like Verizon listening in on your phone call to your friend and disconnecting the call because you're talking about Vonage.
