I may have to fly out of town for a family emergency. Has anyone had any problems bringing DPNs on a flight? I don't want to have to check a bag, since they are charging through the nose for it...

If you don't vote, don't complain to me. [Oct. 2nd, 2008|08:42 pm]

Aaaaaannnnnddddd... For the ladies...

WHY WOMEN SHOULD VOTE

This is the story of our Grandmothers and Great-grandmothers, as they lived only 90 years ago. Remember, it was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote.

The women were innocent and defenseless, but they were jailed nonetheless for picketing the White House, carrying signs asking for the vote. And by the end of the night, they were barely alive. Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their warden's blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of 'obstructing sidewalk traffic.' They beat Lucy Burn, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air. They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cell mate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack. Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging, beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women.

Thus unfolded the 'Night of Terror' on Nov. 15, 1917, when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right to vote. For weeks, the women's only water came from an open pail. Their food--all of it colorless slop--was infested with worms. When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press.

So, refresh my memory. Some women won't vote this year because--why, exactly? We have carpool duties? We have to get to work? Our vote doesn't matter? It's raining?

Last week, I went to a sparsely attended screening of HBO's new movie 'Iron Jawed Angels.' It is a graphic depiction of the battle these women waged so that I could pull the curtain at the polling booth and have my say. I am ashamed to say I needed the reminder.

All these years later, voter registration is still my passion. But the actual act of voting had become less personal for me, more rote. Frankly, voting often felt more like an obligation than a privilege. Sometimes it was inconvenient. My friend Wendy, who is my age and studied women's history, saw the HBO movie, too. When she stopped by my desk to talk about it, she looked angry. She was--with herself. 'One thought kept coming back to me as I watched that movie,' she aid. 'What would those women think of the way I use--or don't use--my right to vote? All of us take it for granted now, not just younger women, but those of us who did seek to learn.' The right to vote, she said, had become valuable to her 'all over again.'

HBO released the movie on video and DVD. I wish all history, social studies and government teachers would include the movie in their curriculum I want it shown on Bunco night, too, and anywhere else women gather. I realize this isn't our usual idea of socializing, but we are not voting in the numbers that we should be, and I think a little shock therapy is in order.

It is jarring to watch Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be permanently institutionalized. And it is inspiring to watch the doctor refuse.

"Alice Paul was strong," he said, "and brave." That didn't make her crazy. The doctor admonished the men: 'Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity.'

Please, if you are so inclined, pass this on to all the women you know.

We need to get out and vote and use this right that was fought so hard for by these very courageous women. Whether you vote democratic, republican or independent party - remember to vote.

History is being made.

As was demonstrated in an interview with Katie Couric, Sarah Palin is unable to name any Supreme Court Case other than Roe v. Wade.

The Rules: Post info about ONE Supreme Court decision, modern or historic, to your lj. (Any decision, as long as it's not Roe v. Wade.) For those who see this on your f-list, take the meme to your OWN lj to spread the fun. OR, if you've done it already, just comment here (with the case).

Okay so September is just such a great month. Fall is just starting, the temperature is just right and...

Wait... what the hell?? IT'S OCTOBER?!?!?!

WHERE DID SEPTEMBER GO?????

And that sums up my life since the last post.  The day after said post, Martin and I took a well deserved vacation to Mexico.  It was perfect and lovely and couldn't have gone better except if I had fried both my cell phone and my camera.  That's right, both of them drowned.  And no I didn't drop it in the ocean, I was rained on.

Yes, it couldn't be a vacation unless Typhoon Cleo was in full effect.  So even though Hurricane Ike missed us, he did make a swipe as he passed.  We picked THAT day to go to Chichen Itza (Mayan Pyramids) and I assumed putting my cell phone and camera in the backpack would be enough.  But no. It rained that much.

Anyway, we came back and work picked up.  And then I decided to take a class again because... yeah I'm insane.  And I'm currently on weekend 2 of 6 that are completely packed (my next free one is in November, I think).

And then there's this other thing... this odd feeling I get when I come home from work.  And suddenly the last thing I want to do is turn on the computer after spending all day staring at one.  I want to keep this LJ up to date as well as a few other projects but I'm trying to find a way to make sure I don't totally burn out on computers but still get the things I want to do online done.

I still read everyone's journals on my friends' list but it's usually between meetings and I never get a chance to respond.  I guess the short of it is, I'm looking for balance in my life.

Meanwhile: in other news, it appears that Canada's national politics may soon look like BC circa 1970-1991.

Well, not exactly. The Conservatives are currently predicted to get a minority this time round. Still, if the Liberals do actually implode, I have a suspicion that a lot of them and their supporters will eventually end up under the Tory banner rather than the NDP — perhaps enough to make it a majority.

Of course, it's too early to say that the Conservatives won't get a clear majority on their own. Or that the Liberals will actually get knocked down from second spot. Three weeks (well, 2 and a half weeks) is still a long time in politics, and anything's possible until the votes are actually counted. [It isn't guaranteed that the Conservatives will even win, of course. Hell, maybe the NDP will just keep gaining and end up as the government!]

It'll be interesting to see what happens next. Will the NDP maintain their momentum? Or will they now come under a whole lot more scrutiny, and lose popularity as a result?

ETA: As mentioned in my reply to [info]forthright below, I think we may see the Liberals turn left to secure their second place standing, even if it means letting the Conservatives get a majority. And they have a couple of heavyweights who could be of great help there, I think: former NDP premiers Bob Rae (though [info]forthright is better able to comment on his popularity in Ontario than I am) and Ujjal Dosanjh.

[music |Andrew Bird - Armchair Apocrypha]

So, I haven't bothered posting to this journal in a very long time.  For some reason, the idea of taking the time to describe what's going on at the moment just seems like a waste most of the time.  I suppose I'm just not a natural journalist.  Also, I find my life to be pretty plebeian.  Possibly it's a case of familiarity breeding contempt?

Regardless, I need to take a short break from work, which has gone from "extreme boredom with nothing to do" to "12 hour days with an hour commute each way".  My poor brain is pretty tired, and I have to make this code work.  It's better than boredom (barely), but it's still pretty annoying.  Why don't I ever get placed on a job with plenty of time and a realistic budget?  WHY DAMN YOU?!?

In any case, life has been busy lately.  Things on my plate right now -

1)  Running Gun Productions - Big things are afoot, and I am of course involved in all of them, although only tangentially for a few projects.  I could stand to spend more hours a week on this stuff though.

2)  Spirit of the Century - This one is sadly languishing a bit, but my good friend [info]dasquish  and I are planning to run a series of one shots of Spirit of the Century for a large group of friends.  We had 19 people get together to make characters at the same time, and we'll be running a series of one-shot games that people will be signing up for on a case by case basis.  Anticipation is high, but I don't have everyone's characters back yet, and I haven't had time to get together with Kevin and do the serious planning that we need to do.

3)  Working on my house - The GF and I bought a house (our first) in June, and it needs work.  Work that I have been lax in getting to, since I'd much rather do things I enjoy once I get home than sand drywall.  It really needs to get done though.  Especially since I don't want to be painting with the windows closed, and it'll be too cold to open them very soon.

I'm sure there's more, but I'm blanking for the moment.  The social calendar is pretty full right now, what with RenFaire season and board gaming and the Sunday DnD game and Friday Night Dinners every other week and several other RPGs I'm in and BSO season tickets and and and and......

Right.  Back to work, eh?

Watch CBS Videos Online

I'm just waiting for somebody to come up with a "Sarah Palin buzzword generator" application: "bipartisan"! "crisis mode"! "paramount"! "track record"! "John McCain!"! "maverick"! "solution"! — mix and repeat as necessary. It's like they gave her a spelling list from seventh grade and told her to repeat those words until she ran out of breath.

I'm... really not impressed. REALLY.

Could this be why the McCain camp is so eager to postpone the debates? So they can skip over the VP debate?

Apparently, my bank thinks that a replay of the Great Depression is 'unlikely'.

I'm so pleased. >_<

That almost makes up for the news that the proposed $700 billion price tag for a bailout is "not based on any particular data point," (A Treasury spokeswoman told Forbes.com Tuesday "We just wanted to choose a really large number." Oh joy.)
