When the Austin City Limits Music Festival lineup was announced, there were many acts that I hadn't heard of. I checked out some of them, and one of them that immediately stuck out in my mind is Hot Chip.
I gotta say--I had high expectations for this band's performance at ACL.
The music is best defined as electro-pop/rock, but there's much more going on than that. These five guys (Alexis Taylor, Joe Goddard, Owen Clarke, Al Doyle, and Felix Martin) make, if possible, the best electronic music with harmonious vocals, heartfelt lyrics, and danceable rhythms and beats since I discovered Venus Hum (2006).
Live, they don't just play the music... but they all have chemistry and look to have a great time playing. It helps that audience was just as into it as they are. It's true what Tori Amos said some 10+ years ago, the audience and performer relationship is all about give and take and is in constant cyclical motion (that's a paraphrase, btw). If it's not that motion, then there's something missing.
Those factors aside, I have to admit that I like that they play up the the "geek/nerd" image and make it beyond cool. Their music videos, especially, seem to say that it's just fine and actually preferred if you celebrate the geekiness within. Songs that you can tell that echo this sentiment are: "Over and Over," "Ready for the Floor," "Arrest Yourself," and "Bendable Poseable."
Picture that I took at ACL that I absolutely love:

So, it's 12:40AM and I'm watching DC Dvds, trying to fall asleep. Tomorrow I must battle past the grumpy crowds of hung-over college students to get laundry done. Here, Sundays are the days to do laundry, so I think I may have to either wake up early, or wait till real late. I've seen groups of people in there, using all the machines at around 2AM Monday morning once. It was wild.
Tomorrow is Sunday.... very nice.
Nothing much to do, just a few papers. I'm not worried.
I borrowed movies today. I've already watched a bunch.
I re-watched Kill Bill and Run, FatBoy, Run. Tomorrow I shall watch Penelope.
I turned in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, The Visitor, Only The Strong, BloodSport, and Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden, which I watched this past week.
4 more days till the start of King Crab season!
Wooohooo! f/v Cornelia Marie <33333

( ANYTIME they wanna quit? Would be fine with me. )
Y'know, if I didn't know better (and I'm starting to wonder if I DO), I'd say
jeanamarie knew some kind of secret WAAAAAAAAAY back when she suggested Kellan could be Matt's little brother. Had she not mentioned it, the idea would NEVER HAVE OCCURRED TO ME! I mean, come on!
Matt: big, beefy, tattoo covered, pierced, fierce lead singer of a heavy metal/rock band. Tendency to let his mouth run away with his brain, but his heart is usually in the right place. Has a soft side revealed by dimples that don't quit, fan friendliness, and sparkly green eyes. Born and lives in Southern California.
Kellan: big, beefy, former Abercrombie & Fitch model. Pierced ears. Goofy, loves to smile, loves to pull pranks, and very affectionate with those close to him.Overly fan friendly, always willing to give hugs, dimples that don't quit, sparkly BLUE eyes (thanks for ruining my record, KBear!). Born in North Dakota, lives in Southern California.
Okay so when I lay it out like that, maybe that have more in common than what I wanted to admit to originally. But
jeanamarie said when she first saw Kellan, she was IMMEDIATELY struck by HOW MUCH HE LOOKED LIKE MATT.
THAT can't be possible, right? Or was my brain, once again, trying to protect me from the obvious? As it was obvs trying to do AGAIN because I didn't register Kellan's OBVIOUS face freckle, so similar to Matt's, til today??
They are both tall, well built, handsome guys with big hearts, thick lips, and light-up-Times-Square smiles topped off by deep dimples. They both love their fans and try to do right by them, and they both have big hearts. Whoops, said that already
And I'm gonna go out on a limb because I can't speak from experience, but they both give uh-may-zing hugs as well, if you should be so lucky.
Sooooooooo, do I have a type now? Or is my attraction to Kellan BASED on my attraction to Matt somehow? I'm interested only cause I love analyzing unimportant sh*t. I wonder...please weigh in with your thoughts/opinions :P Cause honestly, if other people saw their similarities right away while I did NOT connect the two at all til Jelly Bean said so...I might need to think about backing out of Denial for a little while.
Sigh.
I totally forgot my sister is visiting this weekend til about 40 minutes ago when my mom asked what time she's coming. She's got Monday off so she'll be hanging out, which is great cause I haven't had human, non-family contact in for-ev-er. Hopefully we'll get to go see NICK & NORAH. She never gets to the movies unless *I* take her, and we haven't been to a movie in a long while.

So I have a really bad habit of starting entries in a word doc (or lately, due to my obsession, in a google doc!) and then not finishing them. Which means I have all these strings of half entries that don't get posted. Since this week was particularly ridiculous that way, I've decided to give it to you day by day, as is, or with small edits. It's kinda like a snapshot of the past week!
Monday - This weekend was our first in the new house (without moving and my parents and stuff) and it was pretty awesome. We planned to have a debate party on Friday night to watch the VP debates - in the end only Amy (American) and Claire (French) came, but that was probably for the best, as many things went wrong. (The oven turned out not to work so we couldn't cook the lasagna or the brownies! etc.) It still was a beyond hilarious night. Like half the (other) nation, we had planned to watch it as a drinking game, feeling that we actually might need the alcohol to get through. Unfortunately, due to the fact that we were *stealing internet* it took hours to download and wasn't ready until 11PM. This led to us being drunker than expected at the BEGINNING of the debate, so it was kind of all downhill (or uphill depending on your POV) from there. It seriously took us until about 4AM to watch it, with all the stopping and back-watching and everything. But much fun was had, really, although I don't remember as much of the debate points as I did from the presidential one. But Amy brought margaritas! We never get those over here! The mix was imported from Texas! And then there were tequila shots! Riiiight. The only point I remember with clarity is a whole lotta anger (at both candidates) when the subject of gay marriage came up. When the frak will we have someone who can just man (or woman) up and say "yes, I believe in it, and I will vote for it, and that's that"? They're all so afraid. Don't even get me started on the whole "it's the choice of the states" thing. I just do.not.get.it. Meh.
Tuesday - I woke up this morning from just the freakiest dream ever. It was long and complicated, but here are the basics. I was on some sort of spaceship, and I was working with this older guy to do some special demonstration or something - not sure what it was but it involved stop motion photography (seriously!) and his son was around, helping out too. The kid was about 10 or 11. It went on for ages with us setting stuff up and joking around, and the whole time I had this freaky feeling like something bad was going to happen. Then just minutes before we were about to do our thing, the dad went to go set up one last thing (not sure what) and then didn't come back. So we're all "where did he go/ this isn't like him/ it's about to start" or whatever. And whatever he had to do was on the outside of the ship I guess, or maybe he had to open a door to do it? Anyway, we look up out the big window that we were gonna use for observing during our demo, and there he is, floating all dead. (Like that Dr Who ep!) It was horrible. The last part of the dream was me holding back this screaming sobbing kid while he stared up at his dead dad. Freeeaky. I mean, wtf brain??
Also, new oven was delivered today. Yay for actual *good* landlords! Also, after a few snafus earlier tonight (yeah IDK, my computer is on crack) I FINALLY HAVE INTERNET! And it's fast! Yay. Just in time to post for the GGVS tonight.
Wednesday - It turns out that there was no Gossip Girl this week, which saddened me greatly. I never know when the hiatuses are, because I'm not seeing them as aired, just downloading, so I'm not in on the commercials and stuff. I should really look up schedules or something so that I don't get meanly surprised! I am so loving this show though - it is bar none my favourite show on the air right now (well, excepting NMTB of course - but that's different). Best new show of last year, definitely.
I took my nail polish off and my fingernails are still orange! (From henna-ing Rach's hair.) I think nails are like hair and thus absorb the dye. So I'm going to have to wear dark nail polish until they grow out enough!! I'm such a dork.
( Seriously, they look ridiculous. )
Thursday - Found this today (through one of those trails of a thousand links) and it's so weird! I actually thought it might be fake at first. "This Life cover from September 2004 with John McCain, who didn't run for president that year, and Tina Fey, looking a lot like Sarah Palin, is pretty darn creepy."
I was randomly thinking of the movie 12 Monkeys today. It's such a great movie and I haven't seen it in years - I wish I owned it.
I don't know if any of you guys noticed, but
ggseason8 was in LJ spotlight! I am totally amazed at what a difference it's made in our numbers. The number of people we have watching the community has more than doubled. I just had no idea it would be such a big thing. I guess people really do pay attention - although if you think about the total population of LJ, it's a tiny percentage. But you have to consider that it's the percent that actually look at spotlight, then the percent of them that like Gilmore Girls so bother to click through, then the percent who are obsessed enough with the show to actually want to read a virtual season, especially when there are already 24 back episodes posted that they need to catch up on. That's some weeding out, right there! Either way, I am totally on board with spotlight, and I'll definitely pay more attention to the communities on there in the future.
Friday - So last night we finally broke down and finished packing away all the landlords' crap in our house. This house is awesome, but it came with one major drawback, namely that when it said "furnished" it meant "not only just the awesome furniture which actually includes some nice antiques but also a whole lotta crap like pictures and horrible ugly nick-nacks that are scattered through-out the house and are all breakable". Riiiight. So since we moved in (only two weeks ago!) we've been saying we would pack it all up. And I did do a few boxes last week, but we needed more packing material, so I had to stop. Now, after stealing tons of the "free" papers off the tube, we were ready. It took Rach and I hours (Seb was cooking, cleaning, etc) but we did it! And we also moved enough furniture to set up our shelves with books and DVD's. It's all so pretty! So these aren't proper pics of the house yet (next week! I swear!) but you can see how much crap we packed away (thank goodness there is a big closet to stash it in) and also how pretty the shelves look.
( Pictures! )
Saturday - That's today! I'm giving myself a break to put this entry together, because I just finished a quick read/edit of 9.03 in order to write the draft promo. But now I need to go back to cleaning, because our house party is tonight. Rach and I did henna last night (with gloves! shut up) and my hair looks awesome! I slept in it (never tried that before) and it's actually quite a nice bright (almost carrot-y! ha!) red. It looks really natural I think. Too bad I can't do much about my stupid eyebrows - I guess I should get them waxed or threaded again so they aren't so big - they just give the whole game away. At least my fringe (bangs) kinda covers them though.
Jgeez this entry is unwieldy. I have to get better at posting things when I actually write them.
On the virtual season news, here are the actual numbers from today. We've gone from 173 watchers to (currently) 429! That is truly amazing. Thanks LJ spotlight!

I just came back from a 3 mile hike to Waikiki. My calves are burning. It was beautiful there. The new roommate and her friend went swimming for a few minutes while I stayed on the beach and called home. Used the sand to exfoliate my feet and now they feel nice. ;)

Monday is probably known as the most hated day of the week. Most people return to the grind on Mondays. However, after today and last Thursday, Monday is getting pushed out of that spot in my line up.
Last Thursday, about twenty minutes before my classes started, I noticed a missed call from Karen. Called her back. She was in the ER, she had collapsed, and she wanted me to pick up Felicity. I didn't understand all the details and I had to figure out a ride to the hospital, so I was freaking out a little. Getting a ride took over an hour. I finally got there, picked up Felicity...She was fine. No freak out 'cause mom was in the hospital. That's just her, though...She's got a buoyant personality. I was still worried about Karen though. Eventually, Karen was back home, I brought Felicity back and ended up taking them both (at different times) to doctor appointments. I missed all my classes that day, and...it was stressful. The worry for both of them bit, not the missing classes (as much).
Today, right after getting out of psychology (where I learned about all the different issues your brain can have after stroke or seizure, depending on what part was affected), I listen to a voicemail from mom that says dad had another stroke (or something like that) and they decided to admit him to the hospital. I then got to sit through my biology lab while thinking about it.
Thursdays hurt my loved ones.
In addition to that, I was alreayd stressed because my family is sitting in a deep financial hole. Mom has applied, interviewed and been tried out at a couple jobs now, and no one will hire her. I don't know why, either. She's worked in the caregiving business for a very long time, and never really had a lot of problems. Bills are being paid on credit cards. When she does finally get a job, it's still going to be hard to pay off everything. I have $1,000 saved for a car (which I didn't work to save, it came directly from my finaid package), and I feel like I should use it on the cards. I know at least that much is from me, so it would help the debt but not be me taking care of my parents problems. But...I want both a car and to make a big fat payment. And finding a car is not happening easily. Maybe I should do the payment now and just get a car in January when my next bit of financial aid comes in. I don't know. It's just really stressing me out because...I don't want my parents to get screwed over. I want my mom to be able to find a job again. Her hands are kinda bad, so a lot of jobs that are sort of easy to get, she can't really do. And she's stubborn, if I'm honest. I just don't know. KSDKSJDIHSDKKSJDHKLJSHDKJSHDKJSHD

I shall format this entry with bullet points. Because I feel like it.
( So what are you saying? Are you saying that like, there's nothing between us animal at all? I mean, there's not even like, a little animal? Not even like, like...chipmunk sex? )
Okay, I don't think I can think of anything else to spam y'all with.

With the weather getting cooler outside, I'm trying to think of alternatives to doing my walking DVD. I'm fine to do that every other day, but every day gets boring fast.
I was actually thinking of investing in the OrbiTrek (http://thane.com/products/fitness/orbi trekelite/orbitrek.php). Does anyone know anything about that? Opinions?
Anyone have ideas for indoor exercise?

Things are better, but still relatively shitty.
I've been trying to stop wallowing in loneliness here, and have tried to fill up my day with at least a minimal amount of activity. Like right now, I'm watching BloodSport, which happens to be one of the greatest 80's movies ever made. Then, after this I plan on falling asleep to Deadliest Catch season 3.
Just finished watching Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden. Funny, but kinda slow towards the end. I don't know why, but I'm watching a lot of obscure action/80's martial arts films as of late, and quite enjoying them. I plan on borrowing Mortal Kombat, Surf Ninjas, and Only the Strong next.
School was alright. Only one class today.
I didn't do my homework for it. The class is just way too confusing.
Tomorrow, I plan on wearing shorts. This usually happens when I need to do laundry, as I hate answering questions from perfect strangers about what my tattoos "mean" when they see the stuff on my legs. I'm sorry if I don't feel the need to explain my art. haha If I knew what they meant, I wouldn't be so defensive about them.
Sometimes I don't think I'm all that myself here.
I feel like a shitty copy of myself, sullen and fake. I don't do things here that I'd normally do at home, I guess I don't have the guts anymore. Though, I'm seriously thinking about shaving my hair in to a mohawk. I seriously miss it. I don't have piercings anymore, I think I deserve at least one thing from what I used to be like. Since I don't plan on seeing my family again for as much as two months, I think enough of my hair would grow back in time. This way they'll never have to know!
I need a vacation.

uh... I don't like Palin.
Other wise, nothing happened today- which makes it one of the best days to have. Eventful days are usually filled with super shitty occurrences that steamroll past decency. I had some classes today, which sucks cause I'm not usually a Monday person. Having to go to 5 hours of classes sucks balls.
I want a concrete answer to when Deadliest Catch season 4 will be released on DVD!
Screened a 30 second montage in class today, was insanely too short and over all complete fail in my part. lol
I'm about to pop in some scary movie that I haven't seen, but have eluded to have loved watching it in the presence of my fellow film students, 'The Shining'. haha
Oh, I saw the prettiest guy today. hehehe
