More from Pakistan
Well, just as I was starting to think he was an asshole, Musharraf goes and does something interestingly ethical. He's met with the opposition leaders to discuss an interim government to take over on Friday (Nov 16) and declared his intention to step down as head of the military, although he is vague on exactly when this will happen. There has been surprisingly little active resistance to his rule (beyond a protest where some people were killed) and none of the general insurrection some people have been predicting.
What is interesting is the rhetoric coming out of the US presidency. Bush still considers Pakistan a loyal ally, but that may not extend to Mushaffaf. While the WH press secretary has been fairly denouncing the 'emergency rule' in Pakistan, the US consul general has paid a 'courtesy call' on Bhutto, one of the opposition leaders. Of course there's no way anyone in that meeting will tell anyone else what they spoke of, but I find it interesting that this meeting even took place. If nothing else it announces the possibility that the US has a preference for who will take over after Mushaffar. It could mean absolutely nothing, but the appearance will probably be brought up later. It will be interesting to note WHO brings it up and why, and who ignores it.
