This time it is John Coleman, founder of the Weather Channel, meteorologist and self-proclaimed expert on the Earths climate after reading dozens of reports and talking with several scientists and thinking about it a whole lot. Not only has he decided that Global Climate Change (He still calls it Global Warming which shows he's not quite up to speed on the jargon at least) doesn't really exist, but that there is a massive conspiracy by scientists to funnel money into their research to study a non-existent problem.
Okay, I have two problems with that. First, he hasn't said anything about his sources, only that he's studied dozens of scientific papers and talked to numerous scientists. I've seen dozens of scientific papers that are useless tripe and I've seen several scientists who have no background in climate studies. They bring out tired arguments that have already been debunked and don't offer any reason for us to believe them except the strength of their 'conviction' The trouble is there are more scientists who think the climate IS in trouble, and that human habitation is most likely to blame. The second problem is the notion that this is some giant conspiracy to destroy the nation for a buck. I have something vulgar to say about where the current dependency on oil and coal have brought us never mind the climate issue, but let's look at the other side for a moment. The Greens.... They would like us to be environmentally conscious, and they want the funding to find out more. They want us to recycle as much as we can and not destroy the wilderness to build golf courses. The consequences of them being wrong is economic troubles without much to show for it besides a planet that looks a lot prettier than before. I would much rather Global Climate Change WAS a myth, something concocted by people out to make a buck, but the people making the money aren't the scientists, they are the people trying to promote alternate fuels and starting a new industry in the process. All indications so far is that a transition to clean fuels and a better environment is going to help the economy and not hurt it, so I say: let them run with it. It's good for us, it's good for the environment, we won't have to worry about some other country messing with our energy production. If anything was a no-brainer, I think this qualifies. If this is some giant conspiracy, their pitch works, hands down.
Or you can believe the other side. You know who I'm talking about: the oil companies, the auto makers and everyone else who stands to make money off oil or coal, our current main sources of energy. Go ahead believe them if you want to. Take the science right out of the equation and go with what you believe will make a better world. Just remember, if the environmentalists are wrong, prices go up in the short term, fairly high in places, but if they're right, and we don't do anything, then the consequences will be a lot worse. You're risking nothing less than the possible end of human civilization.
Your call.
Oh yeah.. Speaking of Doofus, take a
gander. See if you think he makes sense and let me know.
