The Pelosi Posse
First, let me make it perfectly clear that this is not an endorsement of the person, nor of the office. It doesn't impress me that she's two steps from the Whitehouse of that she's the first woman to become speaker. As valuable an achievement that is for equal rights, it doesn't matter one bit when debating her abilities for the office or her moral character.
That having been said, I'm impressed with what she's done with so little time in office. The Untied States, the most anti-environment government in the world right now is somehow poised to become a leader in environmental reform. If it happens at all, it will be largely due to her efforts as Speaker of the House, and that needs to be recognized. She has only one serious obstacle to overcome: The infamous Bush Veto. She has been able to assemble a capable body of congress critters around her. I say nothing about their value as people. They are politicians and collectively have all the moral fiber of seaweed in a strong current, but she has managed to collect those that don't have so many skeletons in their closets and to date, the only thing bad that Pelosi herself has admitted to was not disclosing her charity connections. If that's all that comes out of her closet, we should be so lucky.
I'm something of a pessimist when it comes to politics though, and I am firmly convinced that somewhere along the way Pelosi will fall from grace when some scandal from her past is brought into the light of day, and she'll join the ranks of the scum that seem to hold onto their seats like limpets, but for the moment, it's nice to see someone fighting for the kinds of things I think are important, namely air to breathe in thirty years and Summers in Wisconsin and entertain the fancy that this could be one of the good guys.
