Artic Circulation
It appears that the reversals we've been seeing in the arctic circulatory system aren't a result of human induced Global Climate Change (at least not directly), but is more a natural cycle. It seems to change on a decade's long cycle and has been doing so as far back as the data goes. Since the 1970's though, the cycle of reversals has changed slightly, which might be the result of GCC, but the oscillation itself is natural.
Okay, here's the problem. On the one hand, the funky stuff going on in the arctic may not be completely the result of Global Climate Change. This would be good news, for a change...... if the world wasn't populated by complete morons.
Ten bucks says that the Climate change deniers will seize on this as ammunition to say stupid things like "Hey, if THIS is a natural cycle, maybe EVERYTHING that's happening all over the globe is a natural cycle." As usual, there's so many things wrong with that I can't list them all, but I'll tackle the big ones.
First, the arctic circulation system doesn't have as much documentation on it as the rest of the climate. By their own admission, scientists don't know a lot about it. The rest of the climate they DO know a lot, and are gaining knowledge everyday, and the data that keeps coming in, when it conflicts with the data we already have tells us that things are WORSE than we thought, not better. This news is the equivalent of a doctor telling you that the disease you have that is destroying your circulatory system seems to have missed your nose. It's good news, but you're probably still going to die.
Second, and this is probably the most important thing, we're getting to the point where it doesn't really matter if we're the main cause or not. If we're not causing GCC, then we're certainly helping it along in a big way, and if we can't stop it by cleaning up our act, what we do will affect things like how severe it really gets and how long it lasts and maybe if it ever turns around at all. Either way, we're pretty screwed.
On the other hand, the mounting evidence points to us as the guilty party. This is just one detail out of several.
More Here There's also a lot of information there about the arctic climate in general.
