JetBlue flight attendant accused of sexually harassing a passenger

by Jamie Rhein Oct 2nd 2008 @ 6:10PM

Here's a sordid, wacky tale, and one that's hard to believe, except that the person who is accused of gross behavior has admitted to part of the accusation.

Here is the scoop from what I read in this CBStv.com story. A male JetBlue flight attendant has been accused by a female passenger of sexual harassment.

She said:

he said he would make sure no one sat next to her so she could be all his. he said that he wanted her. he said that she wanted him. he kept grabbing himself. he tossed his open cell phone on her tray to show her naked pictures of himself . he made vulgar comments to her through the bathroom door when she fled there to escape his advances. he grabbed her derriere when she was heading back to her seat.

He said that:

he DID show her naked pictures of himself on his cell phone. he DID MAKE sexual advances,

He said he DID NOT grab her butt.

act in a harassing manner.

As a result of the woman coming forward with her accusations, the flight attendant was arrested for "obscene and indecent exposure" and for making "lewd, obscene and indecent sexual proposal." JetBlue is still involved in the investigation of the he said/she said situation.

Even though the incident happened seven months ago, the woman said she was too scared to say something to any officials at the time of the incident. In retrospect, she admits saying something at the time of the incident would have been the best tactic.

If such a thing ever happens to you on a plane, which I would hope is a rare occurrence indeed, here is one thing I've thought of to say to a flight attendant (or anyone else) who is making comments you think are inappropriate:

"Sir (or Mam) you are being inappropriate. I do not like the way you are talking and behaving. If you do not stop immediately, I will notify the appropriate authorities."

If the behavior continues, stand up, walk down the aisle to the appropriate person, tell him or her immediately what occurred. If you do not feel safe after taking action, ask for an escort after the plane lands. The woman said she did not feel safe. I'm wondering if she wasworried that he may do something rash after the plane landed. That's why I would ask for an escort. I don't know if you can get one, but why not ask?

There is no need to take on any bad feelings from a person who is acting like an idiot towards you.

Tattoos????? [17 Aug 2008|01:07am]

Hi there ; )

I just got offered a job as an FA with a regional airline and they have said that you can’t have any visible tattoos and I am curious to know what this means????? When I was at the open house they said for example if you have a tattoo on your bicep you would then have to wear a long sleeved shirt which is completely understable.

I have a small one on my arm and I have no problem wearing a long sleeved shirt and also using make-up specifically for tattoo coverage. I am considering having it lasered off if it comes to that but that will take 1 year to fully be removed. I have heard that regional airlines are not as strict as major airlines and eventually I want to be an FA with a major airline so what should I do?

Also, how long can your hair be before you have to tie it back? I also have a small tattoo on the back of my neck which is not visible when my hair is down and of course if a scarf is a part of my uniform then it cannot be seen.

I have wanted to be a Flight Attendant all my life and getting my tattoos was just one of things you do and then think about it later I just hope that this doesn’t affect this great opportunity I have been given.

I would like to know your thought/recommendations on what I should do. I am going to inflight training soon and I know it will have to be covered there also. I work in a professional environment at the moment and none of my tattoos have been seen as I either wear a long sleeved blouse or cover it and I am very discreet about. I just don’t want to go to inflight training and then be sent home because of it. Please help me I want this so, so, so much it’s in my blood.

Cheers!

Salary [06 Jul 2008|02:55pm]

Hey everyone! I just recently got accepted into the July 2008 Mesaba training class out of Detroit. They explained the pay to me and how it averages out to $17,000 a year and that really worries me. Does anyone else work for Mesaba? Is there a lot of opportunities for advancement? Do you only make that amount for a short time? I graduated college half a year ago and I have a lot of student loans and credit card debt that I need to pay off and I don't know how I can do it on that salary. The job sounds so fun though...

Flight attendant accused of setting fire on airplane

By DAVE KOLPACK, Associated Press Writer

Fri May 16, 12:14 AM ET

A flight attendant angry about his work route set a fire in an airplane bathroom, forcing an emergency landing, authorities said.

The Compass Airlines flight carrying 72 passengers and four crew members landed safely in Fargo on May 7 after smoke filled the back. No injuries were reported. The plane was flying from Minneapolis to Regina, Saskatchewan, authorities said.

Eder Rojas, 19, appeared in court Thursday, following his arrest a day earlier in Minneapolis, and ordered held without bail, prosecutors said. The charge of setting fire aboard a civil aircraft carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

His public defender did not return a phone call seeking comment. Assistant U.S. Attorney Lynn Jordheim, who is prosecuting the case in Fargo, would not comment.

Court documents said Rojas, of the Twin Cities suburb of Woodbury, told authorities he was upset at the airline for making him work the route.

"Rojas further stated that he was preparing his cart to serve the passengers, he set the cart up, went back to the lavatory and reached in with his right hand and lit the paper towels with the lighter," court documents said.

Pilot Steve Peterka told authorities that an indicator light came on about 35 minutes into the flight, showing smoke in the rear bathroom.

Peterka called Rojas, who was assigned passengers in the back of the plane, and asked him to check the bathroom, documents said. Rojas, another flight attendant and a passenger were credited with quickly putting out the flames with fire extinguishers, authorities said.

Investigators later found a lighter in one of the overhead bins. Rojas confessed after authorities interviewed him, the complaint said.

Compass is a subsidiary of Northwest Airlines, based in Eagan, Minn. Rojas has been fired, said Northwest spokesman Rob Laughlin. Northwest did not say how long Rojas worked for the airline.

FBI agent Ralph Boelter said Compass Airlines officials showed "extraordinary cooperation" in the investigation.

NY man sues airline over flight spent in toilet

Mon May 12, 6:52 PM ET

A New York man who says he was denied a seat on a five-hour jetBlue flight and was instead told to "hang out" in the plane's bathroom has sued the airline for $2 million, saying he suffered "extreme humiliation."

When Gokhan Mutlu arrived to check in for a jetBlue flight from San Diego to New York in February he was told the flight was full, according to the lawsuit filed in New York State Supreme Court.

But Mutlu was allowed to board after a jetBlue flight attendant agreed to give up her seat and travel in an airline employee "jump seat." It was not clear in the lawsuit whether the flight attendant was working.

However 90 minutes into the flight, the pilot told Mutlu the flight attendant was uncomfortable and he would have to give up his seat and "hang out" in the bathroom for the remainder of the flight, the lawsuit said.

The pilot "became angry at (Mutlu's) reluctance" and said Mutlu "should be grateful for being onboard," the lawsuit said. When Mutlu volunteered to sit in the "jump seat," he was told it was reserved for airline personnel.

At one point, the airplane experienced turbulence and Mutlu sat on the toilet seat without a seat belt, causing him "tremendous fear," the lawsuit said.

JetBlue was not immediately available for comment.

There's A Reason Why They Call Them "Redeye" Flights . . . [25 Apr 2008|09:11pm]

Since most flight attendants have to work lots of weird hours (especially if you're a new hire and don't have much seniority), here are some recent articles from the LA TIMES that dealt with sleep deprivation, messed up circadian rythmns and the "fun" of trying to stay awake when most everyone else is sleeping. Well, I found the articles interesting!

Just As United Says, "It's Time To Fly." Not Pray! [19 Apr 2008|10:49am]
scax_e_one
I agree here that the flight crew was well justified in having the guy removed. Religious extremists need to understand that the world doesn't necessarily grind to a halt until they're prayers are completed. Some of these prayer rituals go on and on for extended periods of time. It's a religion for Chrissakes. Let them worship at a church or synagogue. Airplanes do not meet that threshold.

Praying passenger removed from plane
By AP

NEW YORK (AP) - An Orthodox Jewish passenger who left his seat to pray in the back of a plane and ignored flight attendants' orders to return was removed by an airport security guard before the plane took off, a witness and the airline said.

The man stood near the lavatories and began saying his prayers while the United Airlines flight to San Francisco was being boarded at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Wednesday night, fellow passenger Ori Brafman said.

When flight attendants urged the man, who was carrying a religious book, to take his seat, he ignored them, Brafman said. Two friends tried to tell the attendants that the man could not stop until his prayers were over in about 2 minutes, he said.

"He doesn't respond to them, but his friends explain that once you start praying you can't stop," said Brafman, who was seated three rows away.

The attendants summoned a guard to remove him, said Brafman, a writer who had been visiting New York to talk to publishers.

The plane took off without the man. It landed at its destination as scheduled, Brafman said by telephone from his home there.

Robin Urbanski, a spokeswoman for United Airlines, a subsidiary of UAL Corp. with headquarters in Chicago, confirmed the man was taken off the plane and put on another flight Thursday morning.

Urbanksi said flights cannot depart if all passengers are not in their seats, which risks a delay, and it is important that passengers listen to the instructions of the flight crew.

To anyone considering becoming a flight attendant:
This is a job ment for some and not for others, but can always be worth it!

Woman suing airline over flight incident

Published: March 15, 2008 at 3:45 PM

FORT WORTH, Texas, March 15 (UPI) -- A 21-year-old Texas woman is suing American Airlines for allegedly not protecting her from a man who masturbated near her on a recent flight.

The woman, whose identity has not been released to the public, alleges airline employees did not act appropriately when a man sat next to her while she slept on a March 19 flight and began to masturbate, the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram said Saturday.

The woman's $200,000 lawsuit alleges that when she awoke on the flight to Los Angeles, she found the man masturbating and "a substantial amount of an extremely sticky substance in her hair."

The woman reportedly was calmed by another passenger after making the discovery, while the man was taken into custody by police once the plane landed.

The suit alleges American Airlines employees informed police they had seen the man take the seat next to the woman, but did nothing to move him back to his assigned seat.

The Star-Telegram reported a spokesman for the airline said crew members took appropriate action.

Flight Attendant [24 Mar 2008|01:02am]
slowletgo
Hi everyone. I am trying (keyword here trying!) to find a job as a flight attendant, but a big set back is I'm 19, and most airlines you have to be 20 or 21.

Republic Airways has a recruiting event coming up on Tuesday and I really want to go. They said on the website (http://shuttleamerica.com/emp-recruitevents.asp?id=1) that there will be a presentation and testing. Is this like a group interview? I've never heard of it referred to as a recruitment event, I'm used to applying, going to a group interview, and then going back for another one. If it's the same thing, what should I expect? I'm just a little nervous about what to expect.

Also, I understand for interviews and all to dress wearing a skirt suit, I already have one picked out, but would I wear it to this as well? What else do they do at these types of events and how long do they last? Thanks so much for all your help in advance =)

(Sorry, this is reposted at a couple different airline communities)

Click on the directional-arrow "play" command in the lower left corner. After it buffers for awhile, the directional arrow "play" command in the center of the screen will turn green. When that happens, click on that and the video "should" begin.

New [26 Feb 2008|07:40pm]

Hi! I'm new. I'm not yet a flight attendant but I hope to soon become one. There is an open interview near me for Omni International that I will be attending. They are only taking the first 70 to arrive, so I am going to be there VERY early. Being a flight attendant has been a dream of mine since I was little but I've never had the courage to reach out for it.

Are there any tips to how I should look? I plan to get a hair cut - a friend of mine said I shouldn't cut it too short because she's never seen a flight attendant with short hair. I was thinking of a bob-cut or a short pixie-cut. Which is more "acceptable" to airlines? I also have three piercings in each ear but no other visible body piercings - are those okay? I have to wear glasses/contacts. I am height/weight proportional; in fact, I fit in with the old sexist standards of airlines. lol

I am so excited and I really hope I pass on to the next round of interviewing. I think my heart would shatter if I couldn't pass the open interview.

Does anyone here work for Omni International? Any stories? I'd never even heard of them before this though it seems they've been in operation since 1983.
