How you can help folks who have been arrested at the RNC

Arrest tally from Ramsey County Sheriff's Office as of 10:30 p.m. last night: 284 total; 130 felonies; 51 gross misdemeanors; 103 misdemeanors.

Many arrestees are being held without booking in the Ramsey Cty jail. Not in the system yet, told no info & they won't see judges until Wed.

Though some people have been cited and released, the majority are still being held in jail. We’ve gotten many reports that people are not getting proper medical attention, are being refused their medication, and/or have been separated from the rest of the group.

Also, there are also many felony charges, which allow the state to hold the protesters for a longer period of time. Felony charges have historically been used as scare tactics against activists, and there is much less precedent for them to hold up in court. More often, these bogus charges are simply used to keep protesters off the streets and as a way to oppress and silence people.

Please show your support and solidarity by calling the jail at 651.266.9350 and demand that people are given proper medical attention, are given access to their medication, and are not separated from the larger group! Also, demand that arrestees’ charges are dropped and that they are released immediately! You can also call the Ramsey County Sheriff’s office at 651.487.5149 or the St. Paul Mayor’s office at 651.266.8510, as well your city council member, state representatives, etc.

Calls from jail to Cold Snap Legal Collective have been blocked - please call the jail - 651-266-9350 - and demand that they allow free calls to 651-356-8635

Check Cold Snap Legal Collective for the most up to date information.

THE CAPITAL OF SOUTH OSSETIA IS WIPED OFF THE POLITICAL MAP

The day of August 8 has put a final and irreversible end to the claims of Georgia for this territory. This obvious fact just has to be recognized officially. Today, Moscow possesses an unquestionable moral right for declaring South Ossetia and Abkhazia as territories of Russia. The will of the peoples, expressed earlier at the public referendums, is to be satisfied, as well as their natural desire to be protected by a strong nation.

Saakashvili spent the whole term of his presidency provoking Russia for physical response – to his verbal humiliating statements, to the capture and interrogation of officers of the Russian peacekeeping contingent by his henchmen, to the selection of an alternative government of South Ossetia etc. Thus, when Georgian aircrafts and artillery were systematically bombing living quarters and hospitals of Tskhinval, the center of the breakaway South Ossetia, and killing injured peacekeepers, he was just doing his job. He was doing what he was instructed to do by his US employers. Tskhinvali, as the center of the unrecognized state of South Ossetia, does not exists any longer. What does exist is the Russian city of Tskhinval.

http://www.win.ru/war/463.phtml

Georgia

Hi, this video is directed to an American public and the rest of civilized Western world. I am a Russian citizen, I live in United States for a long time, for over 10 years. I happened to be in Russia now and I caught all this "action" that's taking place in South Ossetia, a region in Georgia. I never posted on youtube, but I couldn't hold myself from doing it now. I had to do this.
My message to American public is meant as a wake up call. American and other Western media especially CNN is feeding you complete horse shit! Russia did not invade and did not attack Georgia. It was a response to a horrible war crime committed by Georgian president Mikhail Saakashvili, this irresponsible man who just can't stand Russia, hates us, and will kiss America's and Europe's ass just to get a chance to join NATO and European Union. America has always supported Georgian "democracy" and I suspect actually that it was America who instigated Georgia to commit this crime.... on the first day of Olympics! How ironic is that? But please don't take this allegation too close heartedly, my point is not about whether or not U.S. government had any role in this, my point is to give you truth about what really happened Thursday night

So again, Russia did not invade or attack Georgia, as your media outlets are saying.

A brief geography and history lesson. South Ossetia is a very small region about 40 miles by 40 miles in the northern Georgia. It's population is around 70000 people. It borders with Russia. Today, many of the residents of South Ossetia are Russian citizens holding Russian passports, it's our people. South Ossetia had claimed independence from Georgia in 1992. Obviously it was never recognized by any international organizations. In 2006, they held an election where 99% of the voters supported independence from Georgia, and the turn out rate was 95%, it was monitored by a team of 34 international observers from the West. It still was not recognized by the world. As an analogy I would like to bring Kosovo situation, Serbian region in the south that was illegally snatched from Serbia and made into an independent country. Please look it up on Wikipedia and see how similar this situation is. How ironic is that America never supported Southern Ossetia same way it supported Kosovo. Obviously, it was made to show Russia how unfriendly the rest of the world is towards us.

Thursday night, Georgian military started an attack against South Ossetia. It was yesterday. They shelled the main city of Tshinkvali. They killed over a 1000 people. The excuse was to "restore the constitutional order in the region". BULLSHIT! This attack was an attempt to commit "ethnic cleansing", it was an act of genocide. They shelled civilian houses, schools, hospitals, without any warning. They also captured several villages near Tshinkvali. Reports say that they attempt to kill anyone of the Ossetian nationality. It was a pure act of Genocide. Wake up!

Russia couldn't watch this atrocity happening to its own citizens. We had no choice but to bring in our military into the region and protect our people. Whatever happens next the world needs to know, that the cause of this conflict is Georgia and its president. Before you accept what your media tells you, before you get fired up by McCains irresponsible allegations and comments, try remember all the lies that American media had always fed you, try to read news from other media outlets, not russian, but other parts of the world, other than U.S. or U.K.'s media.

America needs to wake up and stop doing what it's doing. Stop seeing an enemy in Russia. Stop using countries like Georgia, Ukraine, Poland, Latvia, Estonia who are basically acting like prostitutes of U.S. government in their public acts of hatred towards Russia.

And finally need to say, Mr. SSHAshvili that's how we like to call him. S.SH.A stands for U.S.A in Russian. Mr. SSHAshvili will pay for what happened yesterday.

New radical community for finding friends.

Hello, I apologize if this is a repetitive post in your f-lists, but please bear with me as I announce the following:

add_a_radical (Livejournal Radical Networking Community) Is a newborn community in which its purpose is to link individuals together with common interests in the political spectrum--in particular the radical and revolutionary edges of the table. I created this community in the hopes of making new friends with similar views; as well as having the chance to meet different people who have varying experiences in life--I feel everyone should have a priority in their life that demands for them to speak their mind, and exercise freedom of expression and 'out of the box' thinking. I feel that most of the "Add_me" communities meant for meeting new writers on livejournal are somewhat lacking in these uniting interests, and thus, have felt obliged to create such a community as this one.

Hopefully this community will prove useful as a resource for activists and thinkers to meet new friends with common interests.

Thank you for taking the time to read your invitation to the LRNC!

Veg*n Community for Floridians!

Hey Everyone,

I hope this is allowed (and if it's not, let me know so I may delete it). I have just started a new community called sunshine_veg for those of us living in the state of Florida looking for a more local vegetarian/vegan community. I've made it in hopes of finding and lending support to other individuals in the Florida area who have either already become vegetarian/vegan or are looking for more information in order to become veg*n. Whether you live in Pensacola or Key West, you are MORE than welcome to join the community so long as you are a Floridian with an active interest in veg*nism!

Positive veg*ns only, troublemakers need not apply.

Hope you all join and tell your friends! Spread the word so we can make this community great! :)

ADD sunshine_veg!!!

Cross-posted to a few places.

Miami Edison Senior High: Students Protest and Police Riot

Miami Edison Senior High: Students Protest and Police Riot

by Max Rameau (CopWatch) Monday, Mar. 03, 2008 at 12:10 AM
afrimax@gmail.com http://takebacktheland.blogspot.com/

Miami and Miami-Dade School police are rioting against students of Edison
Senior High School on the morning of Friday, February 29th. The story is
all over local and national news, but is being skewed against the
students. Here is the real deal:

Miami Edison Senior ...

On Thursday, February 28th, a teacher apparently put a student in a
choke-hold during school, according to eye witnesses and CBS 4 News
(http://cbs4.com/local/disturbance.miami.edison.2.665835.html "One student
told reporters that the fight started after students staged a protest
Friday morning against a teacher at the high school who allegedly placed a
student in a choke-hold Thursday.") Then, police enter the classroom and
brutalize the student before arresting him in front of classmates and a
teacher, according to eye witnesses and the Miami Herald
(http://www.miamiherald.com/news/breaking_news/story/438888.html "The
student, she [an unnamed teacher] said, was handcuffed in front of his
classmates and teacher."''They felt as though the way the young man was
handled wasn't proper; they felt it was too brutal,'' said the teacher,
who spoke on the condition of anonymity because she did not have
permission to talk with the press.")

The mostly black and largely Haitian-American Miami Edison students
organized a protest this morning at the school courtyard. According to all
accounts, the protest was peaceful, possibly including civil disobedience
(Miami Herald: "The incident apparently began as a peaceful protest,
according to a teacher inside the school, but got out of hand." CBS4: "The
student said police were called to the school to respond to the protest,
and when students objected a scuffle broke out, escalating quickly into an
all out fight between students and officers.").

Police were called in to break up the protest and when the students
refused- exercising their right to protest- school and city of Miami
police attacked them and the students defended themselves against attacks
by police.

While the media is trying very hard to connect this police riot to
instances of violence at Miami-Dade schools over the past two days, it is
clear that in this case the schools themselves started the fights and
inflicted the majority of the violence. CNN.com is calling this a "school
fight."

There are currently over 70 police cars at Miami Edison and police are
arresting large numbers of students. No police or administrators have been
arrested for assaulting students.

CopWatch and the Power U Center for Social Change are calling on people to
support students' right to protest and condemn school police for
mistreating students.

Please call the Miami-Dade County school board to complain about this
police abuse: 305-995-1000.

Pickaxe Film Screening & Discussion

PICKAXE FILM SCREENING & DISCUSSION

An arsonist burns 9000 acres of protected old-growth public forest in Oregon that can not be logged unless it burns. To stop the proposed "salvage" logging of this incredible ancient forest, citizens are moved to blockade a road and keep the government out. After facing down a bulldozer and the State Police, the fort now known as the gateway to the Cascadia Free State becomes the focus for a developing community dedicated to protecting ancient forests throughout the mountains of Oregon. The film shows confrontations with disgruntled loggers, mass arrests and a 75 day hunger strike.
IF I CAN'T HEADBANG, IT'S NOT MY REVOLUTION

The Black Mangrove is having a fundraiser event at Churchill's on Jan. 24th, 2008 at 8pm. Four bands are slated to play, including: Consular, Dukes, Methods of Doubt, and another band TBA. Since this is a benefit show, the Collective is asking for a donation of $5-$10 dollars at the door. Not a bad deal, and for a good cause!

The Black Mangrove Collective is a new organization dedicated to the task of nurturing a culture of activism, creativity and cooperation in Miami, Florida. We look to open up spaces, temporary or permanent, from which new institutions and new infrastructure can be built based on the principles of self-management, solidarity, and participatory democracy. By working closely with community members, students, activists, and allied organizations, we help build from below the society in which we wish to live. We aim to prove that indeed, Another World is Possible.

Our primary project is the establishment of Miami’s first worker’s collective coffeehouse and bookstore. Managed by its workers, The Black Mangrove Coffeehouse will serve as a political, creative and cultural resource center for activists, musicians, artists, and those who just enjoy a good cup of joe. Besides offering quality fairly traded coffees, teas and foods, space will be provided for activities ranging from meetings and book clubs to workshops and knitting circles. The Black Mangrove Bookstore will specialize in titles not commonly found at the local chain store, including everything from radical theory to underground music to organic gardening.

The money raised from this show would go toward The Collective's ultimate goal of opening up Miami's first collectively owned and operated independent coffeehouse and bookstore.

The words of a Fighting Liberal...

Living in a country bought & paid for by the Neocons who own the (not-so-)Grand Old Party & watching how they have done their best to use their total control of the government to take care of their (political) own & to fill the pockets of their corporate cohorts at the expense of the "little guy (and gal)" & run a war of choice based on lies by throwing as much cash & humanity as they can find it has--to say the least--been a little disheartening for progressives (and anyone else who is not part of the Bush Collective) for some time now.

This post (http://stevegilliard.blogspot.com/2003/12/im-fighting-liberal-you-know-ive.html), written by an unabashed LIBERAL, was written over 4 years ago on a blog I just found today. The sentiments Steve Gilliard writes about are still as timely & as important today as they ever were. I read it & I felt refreshed again. It helped me to remember that the fight for what's right & what's moral is ongoing & it is eternal. We don't ever make it to the top of the mountain. We can't allow ourselves to sit still & merely hope for the best. We have to always work at it & we have to always fight against forces that have a vested interest in blocking progress and in taking us backwards. They will never stop, so we must never stop.

I hope you read Steve's blog entry & I hope it gives to you the same desire it gave to me to engage the Good Fight.

What an awesome way to end the old year & prepare for the new.
