| partner up! |
[Feb. 1st, 2006|10:31 am] |
This has fallen by the wayside in the last couple of months, but one of the best things about this community is the exercise partner program. The idea is that you and a buddy set a goal to meet each week. If only your partner makes the goal, she gets a single point. But if both of you make your goal, you both get two points. So there's a great incentive to keep your partner on track.
You can check out the points page here to see who's partnered up already. But surfer_chick_01 tells me that some partners have disappeared. so don't take the list as gospel. If you'd like a (new) partner, just reply to this post and say a little bit about what your fitness goals are, and how much exercise you'd like to get in a week. Remember, this is the fastest way to get points, and points mean prizes! ;) Also, be sure to participate in this week's brainstorm if you haven't already. |

| IDEA FOR DEVELOPMENT |
[Dec. 12th, 2005|08:08 pm] |
I just wanted to let you guys now about this idea that azelmaroark and I have been trying out. Basically, I loved the workout partner thing and the point thing; but I wanted to take the whole partner-support idea to the next level.
I had been sick of keeping food/activity journals in separate notebooks; I had no motivation to keep filling them out; so I had been writing in a private livejournal account everyday - basically posting my daily eats (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks) and describing any activity I had done and finally writing about my "impressions" of that day - things that had gone wrong or right, and areas that needed changing or help. This option works so much better for me because I have access to a computer everywhere I am - and can update really easily. Meanwhile, Azelma and I had been emailing back and forth about our fitness achievements.
So I thought a neat thing to do would be to convert my private journal into a private community for just her and I to post our daily records of eating and activity and our goals. We are able to give feedback to each other daily, we're inspired by the way each of us chooses to eat each day and thus we're learning from each other. I'm motivated to eat better and post every day; and I'm finding it very helpful! Our little area on the net is private and thus we have the freedom to be completely open about our healthiest and least healthiest moments!
For those of you out there who need a little more of a push in terms of healthy eating and/or fitness recording, consider maybe opening up a little forum where you and your partner can have a dialogue.
BTW, you guys all rock! I've loved being a part of this community - motivation, direction, and a healthy one at that! :) |

Hey, y'all. I had been partners with anadamous and she has been absolutely wonderful, but due to personal reasons has had to stop participating in the challenges. I also was having a hard time, ironically at the same time she was, and had to slack off for awhile. I still exercised but no longer really kept track of whether or not I was meeting the goal for the week. However, I'm back, and ready for a new partner. I think most of you know me but since there have been some new members lately, I'll just post a bit about myself so those who don't have partners can decide if I would be a good match. ( Info about me... )
If you think you fit this description, even somewhat, and need a partner, please reply! I'm very motivated, very friendly, and very available for discussion/comments/etc.
-Azelma :) |

| I have declared a winner!! |
[Nov. 4th, 2005|02:16 pm] |
The winner, by a long way, with a whopping 19 votes, of the contest to pick the most fitspirational picture was surfer_chick_01, for her excellent picture of an unknown athlete doing pushups:
( from this we can deduce perhaps that we are all wishing we did more push-ups )
She gets 2 points, and deserves a round of applause, I think. The next two runners-up were dreamangel222 and kikimustard, who got 9 and 8 votes each. They'll each get 1 extra point apiece.
( and very kick-ass pictures they were, too )
If you want to take a look at the original entries, go here. They're all very good. Great job, everyone!
Also, although the contest has ended, feel free at any time to post more fitspirational pictures. We're keeping them all under the fitspiration tag, so that if you're ever feeling unmotivated, you'll have a giant archive of visual inspiration. (Here's a tutorial on how to use tags.)
Also, I'm awarding points on this week's brainstorm (Eating Right When Eating Out) now. If you have more ideas, get 'em in! |

| CONTEST! |
[Oct. 30th, 2005|08:31 pm] |
Hey everyone, it's time to vote for your favorite pictures! I ended up taking 1 from every posted set. Again, the person who gets the most points will gain 2 bonus points, and the two runners-up will get 1 point each.
Just to be clear, you can vote for UP TO THREE - some people are only voting for 1! :) (You can change your poll answers at any time by just re-taking the poll.)

| points * points * points * points |
[Oct. 14th, 2005|10:51 am] |
There's still time to get your point for particpating in Brainstorm Monday. The task here is to explore what's really motivating you to get healthier, what goals or thoughts or images or facts or ideas can really push you out the door and get you exercising. Everyone who participates will get a point! This is especially important for people who didn't make their exercise goals last week. Go to the entry, read what's there, and see if you're inspired to write something.
Also, new partners: thank you for partnering up! Woo! But you need to specify your shared exercise goal. Again, the objective for partners is to specify a shared goal for exercise (5 hours of trick rodeo a week, 1 hour of skiing 3 times a week, pulling a car with your teeth at least once a week, whatever), and then motivate each other to keep it. If you make your goal and your partner doesn't, you get one point while she gets zero. But if you both make your goal, you both get 2 points. And points lead to prizes - the next prize, at 20 points, is a workout DVD. We're all at zero points right now, so ANYONE COULD BE THE NEXT WINNER. Just get started and get active.
Lurkers: come out of the shadows and pick a partner! |

[Oct. 12th, 2005|04:54 pm] |
There are a number of new or active members looking for partners:
1beforethedawn
tygr2169
blushingwhite
paisley1
stotaness ... and still many more who need partners, but who have been less vocal about it. Check out the points page to find people's intros and to help you decide if you would like to partner up with them. You need a partner to start earning points for prizes, after all. Not to mention: the partners idea is probably one of the best things about this community, and certainly something that differentiates it from the numerous other exercise communities out there. So take advantage!
Also: current partners. I haven't heard from some of you in a while. shrunk, lapetetitmk, what's up? Also, eadavenp and kamerakid, you didn't check in last week. How's everything going? |

| next prize! |
[Oct. 10th, 2005|05:56 pm] |
So, I've rolled over everyone's points; your running total is next to your name, and the current prize total is in the points column. I'm keeping track of the running total because I think we will definitely have to reward people who get up to 150 points, which is equivalent to a year of exercise (104 points) plus near-weekly participation in Brainstorm Mondays. Yes indeed, we will have to think up something special.
But, in more immediate news, the NEXT PRIZE is a DVD copy of The New York City Ballet Workout, which I absolutely LOVE and highly recommend. I've decided that this prize will require at least 20 points, instead of 10, to even out the chances - so that if you miss one week of exercise, say, you have more of a chance to catch up.
So: everyone has a chance to win this next prize! Get out there and exercise and stay motivated! If you need more ideas now, the current brainstorm is about your personal motivations for exercise. Check it out. |

| | so proud! ::sniff:: | ] |
I just added the points for this week's brainstorm, and I realized that we are ABOUT TO HAVE OUR FIRST PRIZE WINNER(S)!!!
Prize Winners! Prize Winners!
Woo! azelmaroark, gmonkey42 and dreamangel222 are all at 8 points. Azelma's my partner, so I'm 99% sure she's done her exercise today and will thereby make the 10 points needed to win the prize, and gMonkey and Dreamangel are also partners, so if they've also done their exercises this week, they'll make it too!! Woo!! I'm so proud of you guys, I didn't expect people to make it up to 10 this quickly!
Therfore:
CHECK IN HERE about your weekly exercise!
After I award the points for this week, we'll roll them over, so that whoever makes the next 10 points first will win the next prize, which is a DVD, a copy of the NYC Ballet Workout. |

| excuses & your exercise goals |
[Sep. 30th, 2005|11:03 am] |
For those of you who have an exercise goal that's every day or almost every day, you might find that you can't make it one day when you're sick, or there's an emergency, or you have obligations to family/work/school that you can't get away from. So, just those of you who have a 6x or 7x goal, you might want to work out a plan with your partner about what to do about those days when it's simply impossible to work out. Here are some ideas:
1. Allow yourself to make up the time. So if you have a goal that's 30min of cardio 7 days a week, you could do 60 minutes one day to make up for a day you missed. This one sounds good, but the danger is that you'll end up doing this constantly and exercising fewer days a week. It's best to get at least a little activity every single day. 2. Allow yourself a precise number of "pass" days a month. Say, 1 or 2. You can take your pass days for any reason (e.g., Buffy Marathon), but you only have a certain number. 3. Allow yourself unlimited pass days, but restrict the reasons. For example: "so sick you're bedridden, death in the family." So needing to study for a test wouldn't count under this one.
I personally favor 2, since it has a sort of aristocratic permissiveness to it while still ensuring that you exercise almost every day, but I'm discussing with my partner right now which we should choose. You should also discuss with your partner what to do, and pick what works best for the two of you.
This should basically only apply to people who have committed to get exercise 6-7 days a week; if you've just commited to 3-4 days a week, you should be able to make up your exercise later. But again, it's between you and your partner. You just want to decide ahead of time, so that you're not making up rules as you go along. |

| let loose |
[Sep. 28th, 2005|10:53 am] |
Feel free to go crazy on the brainstorm which as you'll remember is about listing good workout songs. Some of you were holding back, so that everyone would get a chance to speak up, but now that it's Wednesday, you might as well go all out.
I added in everyone's points for working out last week, so check your entry on the points page and let me know if there are any problems. I still haven't heard from a couple pairs. Also, please don't be discouraged if you didn't make your goal last week, or even if you haven't exercised yet this week. There are still four days left of this week - Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday - which means that there's time for all of you to meet your goals. If you need more exercise ideas, our very first brainstorm was how to get cardio without a gym, so check there. And there's always walking, which is one of the best exercises around for the human body.
eta: Also, it's not too late to pick a partner. Right now, the contest is, whoever gets to 10 points first will win a copy of Laura Fraser's Losing It. But after that contest settles, we'll reset the points for the next contest, so that everyone starts out with an about-even chance. (I think we'll also keep a running total of all points, too, to encourage consistency.) Pending the approval of banishingbigass and sexyclipse, I think the next prize will be a copy of the DVD of the New York City Ballet Workout, a workout video which I really love. So, even if you aren't motivated by the book now, you should get in the habit of earning points so that you can work towards the next prize. I think banishingbigass is planning on offering workout equipment and/or clothes when she gets back, so we're really going to have an interesting variety of prizes. You don't want to get left behind! Pick a partner! |

| run away! |
[Sep. 22nd, 2005|12:02 pm] |
I'm going to be AWOL until about SaturdayTuesday, since I'll be visiting my mom. So
POST YOUR PARTNER RESULTS HERE
Post what you and your partner did to meet your shared fitness goal. I'll hunt you down if you don't post here, so post here!
**clarification: You have through the end of the day Saturday to complete your weekly exercise.
Also, when I visit again on Saturday, I'll award points for the brainstorm. This week, it's just a matter of posting 5 unique ideas for simple healthy meals, so there's no reason why everyone in the community can't get a point. "Unique" isn't that limiting either - I posted a peanut butter sandwich, for example; if you post another healthy sandwhich with a different base, that would count. There are whole genres you guys haven't gotten into, like HELLO SOUP, not to mention more salads and pastas, so there's really a lot left. |

OK, southernbelle14 has won a point for her excellent work in this week's brainstorm, how to add more protein to your diet. Next week, it could be you.
If you haven't already, check out our points page, and partner yourself up with another member. |

| helloooo new members! |
[Sep. 8th, 2005|10:40 am] |
Critical Mass!
Woo, I just noticed we're up to 35 members. That's really great. I just added 2 more people to the points table. The only thing missing is that 33% of you haven't posted any introductions yet. Please do that when you get a chance - check out the new member application in the community info. Also, it would be a good time to start pairing off into partners. If you know who you want your partner to be, reply to the points entry. If you don't know who to pair off with, reply to the points entry with something about who you are and what sort of activities you're interested in doing with your partner.
Partners!
Partnering off is banishingbigass's brilliant idea. The point of partnering off is to have a friend in the community who motivates you to stick to your exercise goals. Ideally, it would be just like having a gym buddy in real life - you would be doing the same things at more or less the same time. For example, you could both commit to doing 30 minutes of cardio at the gym on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Or, you could commit to walking 3 miles every evening after dinner. You'd friend each other in your journals, and communicate with one another over IM and email. At the end of the week, if you've both stuck to your commitment, you each get 2 points. If only one of you stuck with it, that person gets 1 point and the other person gets 0 points. So there's a big incentive to help your partner stick to her goals.
I'm turning off comments on this post, so make sure to reply to the original points entry with your partner choice or your partner request. |

The POINT SYSTEM
Youve heard anad and I mention it here and there. If you will notice at the top of the community there is a link to that chart, and also a link above the tags in the community profile. This is to keep it available and convenient for you guys to keep an eye on your progress and who's butt to kick in the next upcoming participation events.(Such as BRAINSTORM MONDAYS)
