Hey everyone!
I hope 2008 has been good to you this first week, and if you've made any resolutions, that they are working for you. I know that I am personally excited for my "fresh start" this year... my coming semester includes a ballet course for fun and I am looking forward to beginning a weight training routine (and stick with it!). I also plan to start riding with my university's cycling team, even though that will mean head-to-toe spandex.
Anyway... I want to share with you all a very helpful website which some of you may have heard about: Stumptuous.com This website is amazing, it's written by and for women and is the no bullshit guide to nutrition and exercise- with a focus on weight training. If you've done the reading, and understand nutrition and health and really want to become stronger and healthier, yet are unsure of where to start your conquest of the weight room, this site will provide you with everything you need to know. Honestly, this site is amazing! The maintainer has links for everything and presents information in a supportive, yet "you better get your ass off the couch" kind of way. Stumptuous.com has provided me with motivation to start that workout notebook I've been thinking about. And the letters from readers all over the world are very inspiring!
We've always been told that lasting results come from sustained effort and constant healthy choices, and we've all heard the hells of crash-dieting (ephedra, anyone?) I am a avid lurker in various fitness communities on LJ and stumptuous always gets glowing reviews from embers. So, if you're like me and you really want to start healthy habits and break into that weight room that is oh-so segregated but you are unsure of where to start because there are so many things that you are curious about, then you should give this website a read-through!
And so this isn't text-only!

[Jan. 29th, 2006|07:57 am] |
Hi everyone, some of you won't remember me, because there are a lot of new members here, but I was a co-mod up until about mid-November, when I had a little personal crisis and took a hiatus. In the interim, I moved from California to Vermont, and now here I am, ready to take back my part of the yoke again. Since I'm back, I'm starting up Brainstorm Mondays again, and make sure we're keeping track of points. I still have a copy of the NYC Ballet Workout for the next person to make 20 points, so check out the links above if you need more info.
Here's what I've been up to, fitness-wise: ( the gym v home exercise equipment, sprained ankle ) |

I'm sorry for abandoning you all! I went through a lot of crap and kind of gave up, but I'm baaack.
I'm going to lose weight in 5 pound increments and then reward myself for being so awesome as to stick to my plan, of course. So my first goal is 136.5 and I will be getting myself a manicure. Because I know I can't stop looking at my hands when I do, haha. It makes me happy. I want to get down to 130, at least. But I'm just going to lose 5 pounds and see what I look like, and then another 5 pounds, and see what I look like, blah blah. It's easier that way, I think.
For exercise, I'm not focusing on what I'm doing, or how long I'm doing it for, I'm just focusing on doing something every day. Whatever it is, it dosn't matter, as long as it's active. So that I'm being active all day instead of just 40 minutes of alloted exercise that I manage to cancel out by being a potato the rest of the day. I made a long list of things to do, too. Fun things like rollerskating and playing tag. Mostly I just want to feel good. That's what I'm going by. Will doing this make me feel energetic and happy or lazy and slothlike? Yeahh.
I plan to start meditating, too. This factors in to that whole makes me feel good thing.
The Biggest Loser is so motivating.
And.. that's all! I don't really have a partner anymore. If anyone wants to keep in touch, even if we have completely different goals, that'd be cool. I have instant messenger and all that. I just like having people to talk about this with. It keeps me going.
Soo hi to everyone new! My name's Alyssa.
Oh and p.s. This scared the crap out of me.

I was working out pretty hardcore before I got sick a few weeks ago. An hour in the morning (1/2 weights 1/2 cardio) then an hour of whatever class was in the evening. Then I got sick and didn't go because I felt rude coughing on the equipment and whatnot . . . now, I can't for the life of me get myself to go back in (part of the reason is because of a sickness, but I can't tell if I am making excuses) . . .
I dread being bored during cardio. Do books on CD help? Music doesn't help me too much. Neither does reading. Any ideas?

EEEEEK!
Ok, this is not a big deal to anyone but me but
I CAN DO A REAL PUSHUP!!!!
I mean, I can almost do two of them properly in a row.
Last week, I could lower.. and fall to the floor.
YAY! My triceps feel a lot stronger now. I am so freakin' impressed with myself about this. :D
I just thought I would share my glee in doing a push up that wasn't on my knees. |

Well, i decided to finally work out today since i haven't in about....2 weeks now. HOwever, i did get sick on tuesday. So i'm running around thinking...
How do you incorporate excersise/proper nutrition when you're sick?
I tried to run what i usually would but since i've just recovered from a cold AND i haven't worked out in 2 weeks, i failed...miserably, but now i'm sore and my legs feel like spaghetti....
And another question i thought of: When's your favorite time to exercise?
i like in the evenings, but i'm going to try in the mornings.... |

So I got home, and weighed myself, and I've lost about 8-10 lbs in the last 2 months. Which is exciting!!!! Also, I am in pretty good shape, with the running and the swimming and stuff. My clothes are fitting, for the most part, better than when I left for Vermont. My 14 year old brother said I look skinny, which is a real compliment, because he is not generally complimentary. But the point of this post was to wax poetic about the couch to 5k program and the coolrunning log in general. I combined it with 2 days per week of swimming and 1 day of weights this semester, except for the hell week of finals, I am not sure what I am going to do when I am in Spain, but the 3 day per week program has prevented me from getting shin splints, which was a problem before. So, anyone who wants to run, that is a great way to start. |

In yoga (and pilates) when we do exercises/stretches on all fours (example-girlie pushups), my kneecaps BUG ME. It's not necessarily a pain . . . more of a bother/irritation/unpleasantness. No one else seems as bothered as me. Am I totally alone on this one? |

Wow - I had a crazy day of working out today. After school, we have winter conditioning, where we work out for basically 2 hours. 1 hour cardio, 1 hour weights. We did an hour of step aerobics today, and it confused me more than it made me sweat. ( Weight lifting )
I was just wondering, do you think that thin people have more success? Or the healthy, athletic ones? I looked around my classes today, and noticed that all the students in my honors classes were some sort of athlete. I think there were one or two that weren't, but they were still generally healthy. I didn't really have thin people in my classes, unless they were cross country runners (and even then, they've always been naturally thin). It makes me happy to see healthy people at school. It's great motivation because I know they work hard to get better at a sport, not to look good, per se. One girl I met her freshman year, and I thought she had the most banging body. Like, it was pretty unbelievable. Then I found out she played sports year round and was a workout fanatic. That made me feel better, in a way.
It's hard work that gets you places, I guess. Not sitting around on your butt. SO KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! |

Hey guys i just had a question and was wondering if you guys had some answers.
I eat no more than 1,200 calories a day and wanted to know how what i should/need to do to loose at least 15 pounds in the next 2-3 months.
I just wanted to see if you guys had any real strategies that have worked for you or those you know and any tips you have.
I have about 30 more pounds to loose, and i want it to be gone by summer time. slow and steady.
I would appreciate any type of comment.
Stay Motivated :] |

Brainstorm Mondays XIV: Sore Muscles and what to do about them
Continuing the "you've got questions, we've got answers" theme from last week, for this brainstorm you can either post a problem you have with soreness, or home remedies or other solutions you've tried. So you can post about that kink in your neck and does anyone have any ideas, or you can post about the brand of epsom salts you couldn't live without. Try to make the subject line of your post pretty informative, though, because I think this can grow a little disorganized. :)
Also, check in about last week's exercise! Hope everyone worked up a sweat. |

Today I took my first live yoga class! I've done videos before and stuff - but, this was AWESOME. I walked out of there feeling so great . . . I can't wait to go back! It was really nice - only 4 people in the class . . . the lights were veeery dim . . . awesome music . . . so relaxing . . . it was nice and personal. I was terrified of going in there and making an idiot out of myself, but . . . it was just so so so cool. I can't wait to see improvement. Do a lot of people use yoga for rehab? I felt kinda pathetic today - but hopefully, things'll get better. |

Brainstorm Mondays XIII Working through worries about working out
The structure of this brainstorm is a little different. We're all going to post worries/anxieties/fears/concerns we have about working out, then we're going to reply to each others concerns. So the structure of the comments should look like this:
worrysolution solution solution worrysolution solution solution... Etc. I'll start us off with some... ask me if this isn't clear.
Also: check in here about last week's exercise! |

| My Exercise Info |
[Nov. 10th, 2005|11:47 pm] |
As of right now, this is my typical exercise schedule
Monday: 40-60 minutes StairMaster Tuesday: OFF Wednesday:30-40 minutes StairMaster, 20-30 minutes rowing machine Thursday: OFF Friday:30-40 minutes StairMaster, 20-30 minutes rowing machine Saturday:OFF Sunday: 40-60 minutes StairMaster
If I am injured or very tired because of medication/illness/sleep deprivation, I cut my workout down to just 30-40 minutes on the StairMaster or just 30-40 minutes on the rowing machine. I try to get at least 4 days of at least 30 minutes of exercise per week no matter what.
My major setbacks are: being around a lot of pizza or candy (a situation that is hard to avoid sometimes in college!!!), meds that make me drowsy/sleep deprivation, gross weather
I would love an exercise buddy--especially about the pizza ;) |

Brainstorm Mondays XII Making Cardio Less Boring
Clearly, the best way to avoid getting bored during cardio is to avoid doing boring cardio - like by running or biking outdoors, or doing dance/aerobics instead of just the machines. But it's not always possible to exercise outside, and group classes aren't for everyone. Also, even "fun" cardio can get boring after a while. Nearly everyone gets bored on the cardio machines, regardless of the televisions playing infomercials that the health clubs install so thoughtfully for us. But even something like swimming or running can get boring on the 70th lap or 7th mile. So what do you do to stay focused and interested while you're exercising? We need suggestions for everything from the machines at the gym to going jogging to exercise classes. Also, if you've found a kind of cardio that you really like, tell us about it. (Time to wax eloquent, all you fans of belly-dancing!)
Also, check in here about last week's exercise goals. (You should be able to give me the status for both you and your partner.) |

| Just out of curiosity............ |
[Nov. 4th, 2005|10:24 am] |
What kind of sports/physical activity do all you girls participate in? And what would you like to start doing?
I'll start: I have done: Soccer, Softball, Water Polo, Swimming, Golf, Basketball, Snowboarding and Surfing. I currently still play: Golf, Swim (on occasion at the gym), Snowboard and Surf, mountain biking (although my bike is currently out of commision). Most activitiy is at the gym, though.
I'd like to start training for a short triathlon (running would be my major problem, that's why I'm currently doing the couch to 5k program). I'd also like to get back into water polo if I could find a recriational team, as well as maybe taking tennis lessons... seems fun, but have only played a handfull of times. |

[Oct. 30th, 2005|11:27 pm] |
I haven't been motivated at all to work out. I have a treadmill and stationary bike in my garage, and yet I can't find the desire to walk out there and get on them.
I want so badly to lose this weight, so I can't figure out for the life of me why I'm feeling this way. I got a work out partner (Hi Sarah!) mid-week and only got in two sessions of cardio and one of weights.
Do you guys have any suggestions? I'm feeling frustrated. |

hi :) this is shaina3205 (i changed my username obviously lol)
i just wanted to keep everyone updated and let them know that i already feel healthier. my new diet consist of a protein shake in the morning, a special K bar for a afternoon snack, tuna or a salad for lunch, and some kind of meat and veggies for dinner. being that i work 8 to 4 everyday, i just take a 30-45 minute walk after work, saturdays are my "day off" so i usually just lounge around, and sundays i go running and do some yoga.
also, to the mods-- if you need any help with the community/a creative layout, let me know :) i'd be more than happy to help. i don't want this community to die because i think it can really help people. |

| Confess and repent |
[Oct. 26th, 2005|10:23 pm] |
Okay, I have to admit, I was trying to lose weight just by getting into shape and limiting junk intake. However, that hasn't been working at the rate that I want, so I am going to actually do this. Today is day one of actually restricting foods, controling portions, etc. Plus, I am going to substitute my swimming (2x/week) and running (3x/week) with weights or cycling on days that I am unable to do those activities. (For example, due to the snow storm yesterday, I couldn't drive to swim practice.) Anyway, making one's goals public is more incentive for sticking to them. |
