Farewell Rescue 18 It is with a heavy heart that Standish Fire/EMS and Gorham Fire Rescue mourn the passing of FF/EMT Glen Dunlap. Glen was a Member of Gorham's Station 5 where he had served as the House Captain for many years, he was also a crew chief with Standish's EMS division for several years and he had also served as the Assistant EMS Chief. Glen had devoted most of his life to public service, he served the citizens of Gorham for 45+ years, and the citizens of Standish for 25+ years, he also sevred his country as a proud member of the United States Marine Corps. Glen Died at Maine Medical Center, in Portland where he had been recovering from a workplace injury after he fell from a ladder. Like many in public safety, community service is common in glens family. His son is currently a member of a combined station operated by both Standish and Gorham, where he serves as a Lieutenant. His younger brother, is a former member of Standish Fire/EMS and currently works as a Deputy Sheriff, and his sister is a member of the Gorham Fire rescue Canteen Unit. The last Alarm As the last call sounds Men & women who did not know you except by title shed a tear Together they stand to comfort your loved ones and show their respect For a fallen brother whom many of them did not know It matters not, if they are paid or volunteer They have all battled the same demons They have all hardened their hearts, against the pain & suffering that they have seen But today their hearts have softened, and their armor has cracked. Today many have vowed not to show emotion, or weakness But they are the young, and the un-initiated Today they will at last understand the meaning of brotherhood As the polished box is lowered into the ground And his helmet and shield are presented to his family A call, his last call is heard over the radio And the young start to understand As the echo of his call fades into the distance An unseen piper plays his tune As the strains of the pipes reach their ears, the young at last understand And they to start to cry Behind the crowd a shadow lingers He to sheds a tear But not for the dead His tear is for the living and the pain that they now feel For he has also felt that pain As he turns to walk away he sees another group standing there Shoulder to shoulder they stand in respect of a fallen brother, Who many of them did not know It matters not, if they are paid or volunteer For they have all battled the same demons But today they do not cry for their brother Today they rejoice in his life Today they welcome their brother home Current Mood: sadCurrent Music: Amazing Grace on the pipes | | Sunday, April 29th, 2007 | 12:14 am [fyrdawg]

HI Hi, I'm new to this forum, so here's a quick bit about me. Well I've lived in Maine my whole life except for a stint in the USMC in Crash Rescue. I joined my local VFD at 16, and worked my way through the ranks to Dep. Chief, after my son was born and my available time was drastically reduced I resigned my post as DC and went back to plain old FF/EMT work with the department. At one point I wanted to get on a career dept. but I was eventually seduced by the dark side. Hey they had donuts. So I did get into a public safety career; but instead of a night hitch and newyorker, I wear a gun belt and drive in circles all day. Back at the station house, I've got a great mate, a rmbuncious pup, and three Dalmatians, Ahren's Foxy Boy, Throttle Wing-Nut, & Dahlia. Ahren And Throttle are litter mates and we've raised them from birth. We recently adopted Dahlia, she was born at a large breeder in NY where they discovered she was deaf. They planned on euthanizing her, when a friend of mine stepped in and rescued her. I met Dahlia A few days latter, and she came home that day. Time is running out to help my Fire Department! If I've talked to you about the possibility of taking part in my fire department's Cash Bash raffle, or you've been thinking about helping out and buying a ticket... TIME IS RUNNING OUT!The Cash Bash Raffle, for those not familiar with the concept, is a evening long, catered party. Each ticket gets you into this party but more importantly it provides you with a three digit number which gives you the chance to win seventeen times during the course of the evening. Minimum prize is $300 which is drawn every 15 minutes. $500 cash prizes are drawn on the hour and a $3,000 cash prize is awarded with with the last drawing of the night. The money raised through this event brings in 1/4 of our average operating budget of $30K a year. This is what we maintain our fire department's day to day activities with. This is our only fund raiser each year that requires us to peddle tickets and see out donations. Let me pause a moment to thank those who have helped and picked up tickets for the Cash Bash raffle! Thanks Javi Roo, Karwood, Kain Locke and Patrick Foxchild! I have a dozen tickets left and I need to get the money in to our Treasurer by December 22nd. Tickets can be had for a donation of $20 for each ticket. Checks should be made out to "Aspinwall Vol. Fire Department." I can also accept funds through PayPal through my foxesden @ hotmail.com account. (Please add $1 for every ticket donation made through PayPal to cover fees and charges.) If you're interested in helping out, please post a reply here or e-mail me at rockhill_102 @ yahoo.com to get my snail mail address. If you'd like to see the ticket information, visit my journal entry here: http://swift-fox.livejournal.com/354372.htmlThank you again for your support! *Hugs* Swift Fox and Ashes the Fire Dog Current Mood: hopeful | | Friday, July 7th, 2006 | 2:14 pm [swift_fox]

New... I saw this community and it looked cool. I'm not a furry, but a majority of the people in my family and family friends are firefighters and I am interning in San Francisco for my high school. I just wanted to know what this community is about. Stupid question, yes, but humor me. SJFC Day! ( Shark! ) (Crossposted) Yesterday I spent the day with San Jose Fire Engine Company 3 as part of my EMT class clinical on a ride along. It was an exciting day there. The crew really made me feel at home there. Started the day out grocery shopping for the shift, and running several calls. We also did several inspections of commercial properties in the morning for preplanning in the first due area. I got 4 of my 5 required patient contacts in during the shift, and still had time for a long work out, a nap, and a couple of movies between great meals. Seemed like a busy day because we kept getting call after call. There was a fire down south, and training going on, all of which put a lot of units out of service. This kept us extra busy all day long. All in all, I really enjoyed the shift, and I could definately get used to working that way if I ever made that sort of a career jump. While we were fueling up, I saw one of the parade vehicles, an old fire pumper done up as a "sharkmobile" Themed for out San Jose Sharks NHL Ice hockey team... Checkout the speakers. This thing was JAMMING real loud as it pulled into the fuel depot. Images behind this linkI'm a little sore from the workout. Nothing I don't usually do, but I usually do it alone, and being around other people brough out the competitive nature in me, so I pushed myself harder than I do on my own... And I can feel it. | | Friday, February 24th, 2006 | 1:41 am [smokepaw]

Columbia Fire Muster, a tradition in firefighting Anyone who might find themselves somewhere around Northern California on May 6th and 7th (the first weekend of May, for those who do not know) are hearby given notice that your attendance to the annual Columbia Fire Muster is expected. This is something that has been going on for years, and for those who have not a clue what in the hell a fire muster is, just be aware that there will be a huge turnout of both the public and of firefigthers from dozens of agencies, fire engines (both antique and modern), world-famous food from KCBS award-winning Outlaws BBQ, competitive events on both individual and team levels between fire companies, beer, and live music and dance on Saturday night at the firehouse. There is no admission, other than at the dance which has an admission price TBA, but you should bring money for food and drinks. Families are welcome.
Again the dates are May 6th (Saturday) and 7th (Sunday) 2006.
Location is the Columbia State Park, about four miles north of the town of Sonora in the Sierra Nevada foothills of Tuolumne County. Festivities start at 10am on Saturday and last until afternoon on Sunday. | | Saturday, December 24th, 2005 | 12:52 pm [jbadger]

Question of medical expertise & need Well, that's one messed up subject line, but it states it best. And I figured that you all would be the best in helping me figure out what the proper answer should be. A question came up at the last convention I staffed, that I've been mulling over for quite a while... What level of expertise would be best suited for the "needs" presented at conventions? I've heard arguments for EMT's (up to paramedic) and their ilk, and I've heard arguments for doctors. I suppose the discussion could be expanded to nurses, but it still presents a conundrum to me. I mean, with EMT's, they're used to improvising and being the first on any given scene that they'll find. And as anyone who's in the EMS field knows, the best weapons that an EMT has is the gloves on his hand (and other assorted PPE), and his head. Now admittedly, the primary treatment that EMT's administer is the diesel vareity, namely transport, transport, transport. But that could also be considered a downfalling, because not every patient needs to be transported. Which is where the argument falls to doctors, being that they have greater training (and one hopes, experience...), and that they are able to use that greater medical knowledge to respond to and resolve medical issues on the spot, eliminating the need to transport someone. Now as a downfall that I could see to that, they don't have the tools they need that would be provided in their natural work setting, and quite likely aren't used to dealing with the broken masses that EMT's use. Or I could just be unintentionally biasing this the wrong way. In either case, I've been up too long, and this has been something I've been wondering a while. What are all of your opinions? Oh, and can people who aren't members, but watch this comment? I'd actually like to hear the opinion of drewkitty | | Thursday, November 10th, 2005 | 6:04 pm [swift_fox]

Hey sorry about my silence Hey guys. I just wanna say sorry I have been quiet, and am likely to be for a while. I've been in barcelona for the past eight days, I didnt actualy see one fire truck which is unusual for a city that size, where I live in the UK I usualy see a couple a day and thats only a town. I guess the mentality is different in hot countries, they realise how dangerous fire is, unlike in the UK where people seem to think they are invicible against it just coz we have rainy weather. Anyway I hope everyone is ok and again I'm sorry for being so quiet. College is taking up a lot of time at the moment too. I want to go to university eventualy to do something to to with media as its what I'm studying but I still want to be a firefighter full time when I finish it :=0 ) Bucky the firehorse ;=0 ) Current Mood: calmCurrent Music: Kanye West-Gold Digger | | Wednesday, October 12th, 2005 | 12:06 am [benjimutt]

Quick Intro Hey there, Name is Benjimutt... I am pretty sure I've met a few of you folks.
I am a Malamute working as a 911 Dispatcher for a michigan based EMS service. Testing for my National Registry EMT at the end of the month, and have been certified MI Firefighter I/II and HazMat Ops for 3 years now.
I am not currently active as a firefighter due to a move into an on-call district on a hiring freeze. I am first in line when the freeze is lifted, or if someone quits. I miss those middle of the night calls, and anxiously awaiting my return to the big red trucks :-)
When not dispatching, I work for a small LMR radio shop building custom dispatch consoles, and selling light/siren equipment.
As for Furry, I either go by Benjimutt, my malamute fursona, or Fetch, who is a Golden Retriever. Into some art, big into fursuiting.
I look forward to being part of this LJ community! | | Thursday, September 15th, 2005 | 2:35 pm [kayotae]

Glendale Arroyo Seco Fire Academy Update I made it! Well, mostly. Fire Academy graduation was this past Sunday, September 11th. We had a memorial ceremony for those who lost their lives four years to date, then proceded with the graduation. I didn't get to "walk the stage" but I'll be completing the course I missed -- Fire Control 3; Structural Fire Fighting -- next month and will be given my certificate of completion then. Yay! I'm free on my weekends again (to volunteer at the fire station and work overtime!) :P Current Mood: ecstaticCurrent Music: Moxy Fruvous "Big Fish" | | Thursday, September 8th, 2005 | 1:48 am [smashwolf]

Rice + Speed + Hwy 9 + fog = 3 ambulances, 2 helicopters, 3 sheriffs, 4 CHP's, 3 fire apparatus, 12 firefighters, 1 battalion chief, 6 paramedics, and one first responder (me)
Driving home entirely too late tonight, I come out of a patch of fog just south of Redwood Gulch on Ca highway 9, and right into a dust cloud, and scattering debris. I actually heard a noise as I turned off of Redwood Gulch, and thought it was junk sliding around in the bed of my truck, but it was probably the head-on colission. A whole stream of "rice mobiles" I will call them, playing a very dangerous game of imitating Initial D DVD's, and one lost it, and slammed head on into a pickup truck. Had I left 30 seconds earlier, it coulda been me. I was the first on scene, grabbed some gloves, and started triaging, and assigning bystanders to c-spine victims, and evaluate the trauma.
From the timing of this post, ya, I was out there for a while. I ended up on patient care, and didn;t get to really watch Santa Clara County fire E-30 do the extrication, but from what I saw, their tools, and SOP's for it are exactly the same as ours, so I probably didn't miss much I hadn't already done.
I ended up driving the uninjured passenger from the truck to her place here in Boulder Creek. Turned out she was going to a place right down the hill from where I live. I think she'll be OK, but I tiold her not to hesitate to call 911 if anything should come up in the night. After seeing the truck she crawled out of, I am surprised she didn't go to the hospital.
And the other racers in the group acted as if it was all just a big inconvenience, and all split after tehy told CHP next to nothing. But other whitnesses told me that the whole line of 3 or 4 cars were all sliding down the hill at high rates of speed... All of them tricked out with high performance aftermarket bling-bling like boost gauges, gauge pods, pyrometers, 16" or larger wheels with very low profile tires... The car that wrecked, I would wager that the wheels alone cost more than the whole car.

Looking for wildland firefighting courses Hi all! I'm looking for entry-level wildland courses in California. Specifically, I am looking for S-130, Basic Wildland Firefighter and S-131, Advanced Wildland Firefighter. I'm in Los Angeles, but am willing to travel to Northern California or out to Arizona/Nevada. If anyone knows of any wildland firefighter academies in the area, please let me know. Thanks in advance! |
