i certainly haven't been shopping for any new shoes
and i certainly haven't been spreading myself around
i still only travel by foot and by foot it's a slow climb
but i'm good at being uncomfortable so i can't stop changing all the time
i notice that my opponent is always on the go
and won't go slow so's not to focus and i notice
he'll hitch a ride with any guide as long as they go fast from once he came
but he's no good at being uncomfortable so he can’t stop staying exactly the same

if there was a better way to go then it would find me
i can’t help it the road just rolls out behind me
be kind to me or treat me mean
i make the most of it i'm an extraordinary machine

i sing to you to seek a new disaster everyday
you deem me due to clean my view and be at peace and lay
i’m here to prove i’m here to move in my own way
and say i’ve been getting along for long before you came into the play
i am the baby of the family it happens
so everybody cares and wears the sheeps clothes while they chaperone
curious you’re looking down your nose at me
while you appease curtious to try and help but let me set your mind at ease

if there was a better way to go then it would find me
i can’t help it the road just rolls out behind me
be kind to me or treat me mean
i make the most of it i'm an extraordinary machine

do i so worry you
no need to hurry to stay this far and kind (? - any other interpretations?)
but it’s to no avail
i don’t want the veil of flowers
no everything will be just fine

if there was a better way to go then it would find me
i can’t help it the road just rolls out behind me
be kind to me or treat me mean
i make the most of it i'm an extraordinary machine

Review: Well, I'm listening to the song for the 5th time now. The first time, I really didn't like it, and still I'm not too impressed. The music isn't great at all. It sounds to me like Rogers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma music. Clarinet, flute, other instruments I can't identify, but very wind and string ensemble. Don't get me wrong, I love music like that (I'm even in my school band), but it just doesn't seem appropriate here. Don't expect drums or guitar. I think the music is a big problem I have with this song. I'm liking the song a little more with each listen, but I don't know. The music seriously needs a makeover. I think I am fairly with Fiona's voice, and I'm content with the melody line--it's catchy to me. This song, though, certainly doesn't highlight Fiona's talent. If the other songs on the album are similar to this, I can see why Sony shelved it. (Btw, is it official it's shelved for good or is it still in limbo?)

Give this song a listen (or more, which I suggest) and tell us what you think!

Again, tremendous thanks to [info]vacntilkreation for supplying us with this!

Wow. I didn't think I'd ever say this about a Fiona song, but I don't like it. Definitely sounds like it should be in a musical (& I like many musicals, but you know what I mean). Her voice does not fit this sound at all. Plus, like you mentioned, it gives her voice no room to shine. I think the music actually takes away from her voice, if that's possible. Her voice just seems so plain.

I don't know, this song is just really disconcerting. I don't know if I even want to hear the rest of the album...

It's definitely different, but I think I like it. Perhaps not as much as her older stuff, but I don't think it's horrible. I can see how it might remind you of a musical, but I like musicals, so... *shrugs*

I can't seem to stop smiling listening to this song--it's so unexpected (almost satire) yet really creative.
fun quirky lyrics.

I love the bridge where she goes in the upper register, so don't say the song does nothing for her voice.

I like it!

But that's my two cents.

It certainly isn't my favorite Fiona song by any means, but I enjoyed it overall. I really liked the way that the instruments in the background all came together to create music that didn't really fit together to sound like music (sorry if that doesn't make any sense.. lol), but I definitely agree that this isn't quite the best sound for Fiona's voice. Hopefully, the rest of her new album will be better than this... not necessarily the same as "Tidal" and "When the Pawn," but just better than this song. :)

ok i did it. hmmmm....it sounds like it could be the music to a cartoon. at first i didn't like it, but it grew on me as it kept playing and she started singing more instead of talking. i love fiona, she always does want she wants and i don't think she would care if a single album wasn't bought. music is her therapy, she isn't trying to appeal to the entire population. it brought a smile to my face and when the cd is released i will be waiting in line to buy it!

Well, it's clearly not as good as the vast majority of the songs on her first two albums but I guess it's not bad. The high-pitched singing to the middle part is fairly annoying though.

We can't blame Fiona if she wants to explore a new direction in her music. After all, we are only her fans and she owes us nothing in that respect.

I'm still looking forward to the new album, if it ever gets released, because one bad song doesn't make a bad artist.

I LOVE it! It's certainly different than what is out there now, and I think that's great.... I mean, really; if I hear "Yeah!" one more time.... *grrrr*

But, I digress. Musically, it reminds me of "Paper Bag". Of course, this is less orchestral but I think the music is equally quirky. Lyrically, I think it makes perfect sense! "Tidal" introduced us to an insecure, sullen girl whose coping mechanism was her music. The music was built around the lyrics; giving the album it's somber feel. The last track in "Tidal" was "Carrion"... an angry song that proved ominous of what was to come. "When The Pawn..." showed a portrait of an angry young woman who was sorting out her demons and coming into her own skin. The last track on that album, "I Know", was surprisingly subtle... a woman who is aware of and at peace with her lover's wrongdoings.

I think this album will not be as heavy on the somber. I can see the album being equally introspective, but with a positive spin. Fiona has battled and beat her demons and ready to be happy.

That's my (humble) opinion regarding this song. What I think is interesting is how Fiona and I have made this journey together, her emotions matching mine. At this point in my life, it's like she picked up on my thoughts.

GRADE: A+

thanks for posting this!! i have to agree with a lot of people, i did not like it first listen. its starting to grow on me, though. but i still think the vocals or the music, or the combination of the two is just so boring. i can sort of picture it being the theme song for an old tv show like All in the Family or something, which i'm not too happy about lol. and i can also see why sony shelved the album, especially because it's not the same fiona that everyone knows (not that that's bad from my point of view--change is good! lol but businesses dont always feel the same :P )

i'm trying not to judge based on one song, so...POST MORE!! hehe. out of curiosity, how did this song get out?

I liked it first time I listened. It's- happy. I mean, I love When the Pawn (more than Tidal in fact) and that's where she's truly angry and lovely. Extraodinary Machine isn't bad at all, I think for someone like Fiona who has brilliant song-writing skills it doesn't matter what kind of instruments she uses or if it differs from her 'orginal' style, that talent will still shine regardless. I think she writes her lyrics amazingly. This song reminds me of Paper Bag, oh and plus I've never heard her sing notes as high as the ones she sings in the bridge. I've always thought she was an alto and can't sing any higher than that- impressive. :)

okay, i think i see what she was trying to do, but it didn't work. i think that maybe she was trying for that whole rogers and hammerstein musical feel on purpose. like, that just seems to be the type of song it is, and it is drastically different from her usual stuff. but. my main problem is like everyone else's, i guess - it's boring. even if it was meant primarily to have the whole musical feel, they could have done so much more with it even in that regard. i spent the entire song waiting for something to happen. like, i was expecting the piano and drums to come in at least halfway through the song and bring it home, but it just didn't happen, and i think it sounds extremely unfinished. to me, actually, it feels like a rush job, like they needed to record music for it in five minutes, which doesn't make any sense considering the immense amount of time she's had since the last album. i'm confused. this isn't really fiona at all.

its too simple for her. when i think of fiona & compare her to other artists, i find that i enjoy her more because shes so deep into each and every song that i get just as deep into it. her words always drip with emotion and i can actually *feel* the fucking song inside of me as i sing along. didnt get the same feeling with this one. dont get me wrong, im all for expanding your horizons and seeing what else you can do, but this wasnt a successful attempt at going in another successful direction. im never going to be able to say i hate a song she has anything to do with, but im just not feeling this one. its still her in the sense that its not your typical mainstream garbage song you can hear on the radio. and its still her in the sense that she is creative with her lyrics and tried to really convey her current state of mind in an unorthodox kind of way. but its just...not her...at the same time.

but who knows what the rest of the album might bring. ive always enjoyed her complex approach at music, and am hoping this new, simple side of her is just her wanting to take a minute out to stop and smell the roses, and not something permanent.

ok....i have had it on repeat, and at first listen.......shit. i thought it didn't have the same feeling of vocal tone that fiona is famous for. until i listened to the lyrics (i think it is about her music). and now i think it is alright. not great. lacking in any kind of change in the music. i think that if it had a great piano melody that changed, it would be so much better. but i like it for the most part.

i was pulled right into this song. i just love it. i'm anxious to hear the rest! i agree with a previous poster, that is is reminiscent of "paper bag." it's upbeat, reflective, and broadway-ish. something i would normally never go for, but when it's packaged by Fiona i find it quite edible.

i'm guessing this album may garner a similar, "wtf?," reaction from Fiona's fans that Tori did with, "Boys For Pele." which isn't a bad thing in my book at all.

at first listen i was like, "wtf? bassoon?". that question came about again and again but with different instruments. bassoon, oboe, flutes, clarinets? i was really confused & didn't like it at first.
however, on the 2nd listen i was listening to the lyrics & on 3rd listen i read them in vacntilkreation's journal. sure, it may be different, but i think if she didn't give us something different everyone would be like, "wow, this is boring. it's same."
at any rate, i think it's wonderful.

She has done nothing but live... and in that the recording industry has no sense of her feelings. I have always been excited to listen to Miss. Apple. She is very true, raw, and unwilling to give...even a little. Her music is perfect to my definition of magical and entertaining. Her heart and her soul is all written on that paper, recorded through a mic, mixed on a board, and produced to a CD; for us to experience. So much depth and cunning contextual stimuli that it is hard for me to understand why it is not out to purchase. She is the black-sheep of the industry: she will forever have a far base: she will write meaningful lyrics and heave them into your psyche.
