Hi guys. I've been out of the FF loop for quite some time, but I am returning to the game (hopefully today) however, I was wondering which server is the largest? I have a character on Fenrir, but it always seems dead. I was thinking Odin has the largest amount of players to interact with in some way or another; am i right?

Thanks for the help.

Heyyo! My name's Sarah, and I have a character I'm just starting on the Odin server named Sareena. She's a Level 10 Mithra Thief based in Windurst right now, but I'm hoping to get her up to Ninja in good time. <3

Although I only started playing this time a couple weeks ago, I've been playing on and off since 04 or so. Who knows why, but FFXI just seems to be the home I keep coming back to. Life sort of got in the way the other times, but I'm hoping to actually stick with it now that I have the free time.

*feels the addiction setting in already..*

Anyway! I had a question for you guys, one which my own searching just isn't seeming to answer very well. Seeing as there are Odin members on here, I was wondering if any of you knew of any fun-loving linkshells on Odin?

Looking at things like MithraPride makes me green with envy, to be honest. ^^; While focused/dedicated linkshells and ones for general conversation are quite fine, I have a sweet tooth for banter. ^^;

Unfortunately, Odin seems to be the "straight man" of the servers, at least if what I've heard and seen is representative. As a result, I've been having trouble finding anything promising on Google or the LS community.

So, if anyone has any thoughts on Odin LSes that have love for RP, Mithra interests, or silliness-in-general, I'd be really happy to hear them.

Again, warm greetings to all! ^^

The Linkshell

Greetings to those that know me and those that don't. I am known as either Speck (typically a whm/blm) or Guiban (typically a war/mnk) and I game on the Phoenix Server. I have recently created a Linkshell I have humorously titled 'TheLinkshell' (well, both because I thought it was funny, and my gf said she wouldn't join if I named it the other names I wanted). First, I would like to say Hi to any members of TheLinkshell that have a Livejournal page, so HI!!!!!

Anyways, what I'm really posting about is that our linkshell is looking for members, both Officers and normal members. We are a very friendly and Open linkshell that wants friendly players who love conversing and helping each other, I like to think of a Linkshell as a little gaming family. We assist with anything from Missions, quests, Farming, leveling and everything else that our members wish to try and do. We have a few 50's, at least one 70 and quite a few 30+ characters in our linkshell. If you are interested, message me here and we can set something out, or send a /tell to Speck or Kazuko on the Phoenix sever.

We have both a community on the Linkshell Community Playonline website as well as a forum address located at Http://7thwing.proboards59.com. We look forward to gaining new members (we all love helping out those just starting as well).

Hiya all. Doesn't look like too many folks here but I only just found this community so I figured I'd join it and see what's going on nowadays. I've been playing FFXI for 4 years this coming December though I'm currently on a hacker-forced hiatus as SE tries to do game data recovery on my account. Whee fun! XD

As a little introduction for myself, my main character is a taru WHM75 named Mychael. Initially he and my galka PLD 75 named Erge were created over on the Ragnarok server while my first characters were made on Midgardsormr since I had friends on each server. Around 2 years ago, SE offered a chance for a few servers to move characters for free over to Midgardsormr, Ragnarok being one of those servers choosen, so I decided to move all my guys together onto one server.

My LJ postings have been very sparse but I've gotten in the habit of checking my friend's list here each day or two so please feel free to drop me a reply if you want to say hi. :)

Siren Server RP Community

For those of you who are interested in roleplaying, The Silver Gryphons is a roleplaying linkshell on Siren server. The only RP LS on our server, as far as I know.

We do events together (CoP, RoZ, ToAU stuff). We finished doing the entire ToAU storyline together as a linkshell, and we have our own characters' storylines running on the side. We do Campaign together, we go on "camping trips" to different zones every few days, hunt NMs, and that sort of thing. We're also trying to do the WotG storyline together as well.

We do a bit of out-of-game RP on our forums as well for those of us who cannot make it on the game regularly who don't want to miss out on things. We've also gotten quite a few of our members up through the ranks in Assault since we also like to do those as well, time provided. We are an active LS with a handful of regular players who are always looking for more good RPers to interact with.

For those of you unfamiliar with roleplaying, it's acting. You play a character. You create a history for them, react in-game how they'd react, as long as it's within the bounds of the game. What this means is you cannot have a character with wings, your Elvaan cannot have a Mithran tail, your character cannot have armour you .dat modded in from ffxidats (ie, if you .dat mod in an Ares cuirass for a haubergeon, your character does not have an Ares cuirass in RP; they only have a haubergeon).

Roleplaying in this game is really a lot of fun and adds a whole new dimension to the game.

If you're interested in this -- or even if you aren't and you're just curious to see what RP is like -- please check out our forums at http://silvergryphons.forumcircle.com and join us! Registration is required to post to the forums. Writing up a character profile and having it approved by the mods is a prerequisite for getting a pearl -- we're generally open to all players, though, as long as they're on Siren. Be respectful and follow the rules and you should be all right.

If you want to know how NOT to RP, please check out the bad_rpers_suck community.

See you in game!

Thinking about coming back...

I played FFXI for a while, but left for WoW. Now that most of my WoW friends have quit, there's not a lot left there for me and my four 70s and I'm getting bored. Again. And I'm strongly considering coming back to FFXI.

The last time I played was just after ToAU came out. I got the blue mage and puppetmaster jobs and that's pretty much it. So that's been, what, a year and a half or so? I have an idea of some of the changes, I know there's another expansion I'll have to get, and I know there is chocobo breeding! And, you know, some other things that are less important. I still have all my characters, because I've been logging in every few months to run around and look at things and be back for a little while and keep my levels (such as they are) and stuff just in case I ever did decide to come back. My highest job is a 40-almost-41 WHM (a job I was -very- good at, back in the day, and hopefully would be able to get back to), and then 25 SMN and 18 BLM after that, and 12 PLD and then other things too tiny to mention. I had a couple friends twink me through the rank five mission so I have my airship pass and everything. I haven't touched any Zilart or Promathia or Aht Urhgan stuff at all, except unlocking some jobs.

I'm basically trying to get an idea of what things are like now. How is leveling? Which jobs are most wanted for parties, and which ones have a hard time getting a group? Are the dunes still as noobtastic as ever? How is the economy? Am I going to pay a million gil for a single fire crystal? How far is it possible to solo? Are there still linkshells on Fairy that are friendly and fun and willing to help a returning noob out, or is everybody all up on end-game stuff? Is there anything else about the gameplay that's vastly different from what it was around when ToAU came out?

Thanks for the help!

Hi everyone. :) I am sending a little request, a bit hopeful, but is anyone on Bahamut server with a good LS?

My fiance and I are looking for a linkshell that's a little more social and active than the one we're currently in. And no offense, we love helping others out, but the LS keeps inviting new person after new person after new person, and there's only so many times you can help get kazham keys and kill the 2-3 dragon, you know what I mean?

I have 57WHM/BLM, rank 6, actively leveling WHM and 17SMN/WHM (the dunes, why must you suck so bad!?) and looking to do Zilart and 6-1 (and up.)

Fiance is 57PLD/WAR and leveling 17BLU with me, and also rank 6 and looking to do the same things, and more.

SO! If you happen to be on Baha and are in an active linkshell that might take a few more, please let us know. Thanks! :D

Lol reflect?

You know, I never though the Greater Colibri's would have a constant reflect. It's funny as hell with the Paladin flashing and then I see the white magic effect at the feet go off and and I see the mouth drop open like it's yelling, "Owned sucker, haha!" Where it works its way up the party to be killed. Although I must comment, if you have retarded people that love to run them past their own kind and they link, but the person that's fishing isn't cognitively aware enough to know that they level by sight... It just makes things very difficult. I never thought I would appreciate the competency that some people have. For example, good white mages and red mages I <3 them. I also give an undying amount of respect to the good Ninja and Paladin tanks that just make things so much easier...

BUT...

What I would like to know is why people don't appreciate the effort of Thieves that pay attention, use collaborator or accomplice if things REALLY go bad. You know, the ones like me that if the party has picked up more than two in links I'll take the third but not the forth and just perfect dodge and continue to beat on the current party target, all the while keep shadows up on myself and minimizing damage and stress on the casters, and picking the link back up as necessary. If you didn't know prefect dodge isn't invincible :D. So would someone like to explain that to me?

Also... (I don't want to sound like I'm bitching...)

Why do stupid players blame you for stupid things that they do themselves? As a Dark Knight or Ranger when you hit hard, you hit HARD. Don't blame me if you're not aware that if you get two swings off and they hit I use collaborator it takes a quarter away from those two hits plus the TA and weapon skill. If you hit for a grand and it turns around and kicks the crap out of you, my god turn around and let the tank get some hate back! Is it that hard to just turn around, really?

Well, I'm done. Happy hunting for everyone in FFXI.

Take care!

Greetings this is Regnineh from Odin server.

The last update besides being large and me personally having a hard time updating it with my wifi ( I actually had to plug directly into the router) was wonderful. I'm a bard so the new /ja was wonderful. But really floored me was the simple things they added that should've been added during the first year it was out.

1. Moogles in Selbina and Mhaura - This would have been great when I actually needed them

2. Auto Sort function - okay this is the greatest in a long time. No longer do I have to auto sort on my own (wait isn't that manually) after every drop it does it by itself. This to me is wonderful

So here is a question - What do you think Square should do that should've been done awhile ago.

Hacked Accounts and You

What follows is something that I posted in my LS forum. I understand that it is more than likely to draw some flames, so if ask that if an individual finds any part of it disagreeable that they either refrain from responding or do so in a mature and intelligent fashion. If any section is found to be lacking or if someone can think of something that isn't here please quote the section and add to it in your comment. I would also like to point out that it may be of interest to the community moderator to work together with the various members of this community, or even just the members themselves, to compile as complete a guide as possible and create either or both an off-site link to the information that is kept in the community profile or create a permanent first post (if possible) that contains it.

In 2006 RMTs were the big problem and in 2008 we have a whole new set of people determined to ruin our enjoyment of the game: account hackers. I admit that I am by no means a computer whiz but I do have a handle on some of the basics to keep my PC secure and I would like to share that here due to the recent rash of hacked accounts. Please note that the term 'you' is used in a universal sense and does not mean any specific person or persons, be they in our LS or otherwise.

-Keep your internet/computer security up to date
If you are accessing the internet and do not have any internet security programmes like, at least, an anti-virus, you may as well take your PC out to a field and have at it Office Space style. While I cannot make recommendations as to specific anti-virus programmes, I will say that I use the Verizon Internet Security Suite (anti-virus, pop-up blocker, firewall and anti-spyware). Also, keep your OS's software up to date.

-Learn to use your security programmes
That's right, read the manual and learn how the programmes work. Set your firewall and determine what programmes can have access to the internet and which are blocked. If you see a programme on the list that is unfamiliar to you track it down to see what it does and delete or alter its settings as necessary.

-You infect yourself with Trojan Horses, not the other way round
Who carted the Trojan Horse into the city? That's right, it wasn't the Trojans. Do not download things that are cute, silly or otherwise interesting if the site you are potentially downloading from is not safe. Look for a security certificate.

-Cookies are not delicious
If you are using Windows OS, go to Control Panel-->Internet Options-->Privacy and set it to at least Medium-High. Cookies can be useful but, ultimately, is it all that taxing to wait a few more seconds for the page to load?

-Do not use a windower
The information in all of the above pertains to this. If you are using a windower you are leaving your FFXI information open to someone who knows what they are doing, especially if you are leaving a mule out overnight to sell items at bazaar. You wouldn't leave your doors open and then go out for the night, so don't use the windower. Get the information you definitely need beforehand or use a second computer to look up information. Recall that S-E doesn't support a windowed mode due to the potential for illicit activity, so those who use a windower and happen to get hacked have no room for argument.

-Do not share your account information
Duh.

-Do not store your passwords on your computer
Again, duh. Your password should be something alpha-numeric and I have learned this from personal experience. Two years ago my ex had access to my laptop, went around the initial User PW I had set up for Windows and accessed all of my files as well as my e-mail because I stored the password to my ISP. I only know this because files were e-mailed to her from me that I would not have sent. If you store it and they want it they will find it, period. Besides, you won't forget a password that you have to input each time.

-Read the Final Fantasy XI terms of service
It's some eye-opening stuff and also shows some back-handed graciousness on the part of S-E in restoring character data if your account is hacked.

The tone I have used here isn't exactly pleasant but that is because there are two common misconceptions about the entire enterprise of hacked accounts that blow my mind:

(Premise 1) You bear almost complete responsibility if you are hacked, not the hacker. Yes, the hacker should not be taking advantages of your lack of common sense but it isn't like tripping a blind man. You have options open to you, like learning to use the tools at your disposal and having the appropriate tools before connecting to the internet for any period of time.
(Premise 2) Your character data is not in any way nor will it ever be yours. Read the ToS, seriously.
(Conclusion, Primary) Saying 'my account was hacked' is an almost complete misnomer. The account is something that you rent and it was hacked only insofar as an enterprising individual, though wholly wrong in doing so, took advantage of your lack of applying due sense.
(Conclusion, Secondary) It is absolutely amazing the burden that 'The Company', whomever they are and in whatever area, places on the consumer. For some reason the consumer must hold 'The Company' almost completely innocent if anything goes wrong with the service or product they provide, the only other option is to not use the service. When and if you read the fine print you will never cease to be amazed at just how limited your rights are if something goes awry, it is the hallmark of Capitalism gone the wrong direction.

Scared of getting your account jacked? Check here

So following my own ordeal of nearly losing my account, i've decided to post a couple of things that YOU as the owner can do to ensure your account security.

1: Avoid ffxi somepage, FFXI wikipedia, and possibly allakazham.

Yes i know these are popular sites people go to, however that is the main reason why the RMT are targeting these sites. If they can infect even a single percent of the traffic that goes through those sites, boom, thats several thousand accounts compromised.
My own hijacking took place when i accidentally visited somepage after i tried googling something and returned somepage as the first hit (which i hit automatically by mistake).

I know some people might defend those sites, but to be honest i don't care. This is your account we're talking about. The fewer risks you take, the less likely your account is going to be compromised. Why do i list those 3 specific sites? FFXI somepage should be all too familiar to most people. It was one of the first(if not first) hacked site to infect FFXI accounts specifically.

I don't recall the news about FFXI Wiki exactly, but you may have heard about the recent Flash update that covers up an exploitation that could be used to take over your account. I think i remember reading somewhere that one of the flash ads was using that exploit to upload keyloggers and other harmful things into the users computer. That is the main trouble with public wiki, they can be edited by those thieving RMT bastards as well.

Allakazham...well i'll let you draw your own conclusion seeing as the site is owned by IGE last i heard.

If you truly need to look something up, look it up on a NON-FFXI computer. Heck, just check it on a computer that can't even run any games.

2: Get some antivirus software: If your surfing the internet without antivirus, your surfing naked. I personally started to use Avast! and AVG Internet Security 8.0. Yes 2 antivirus running simultaneously. Call me paranoid or whatever, id rather have beefed up protection now that the feeling of "I'll never get hacked" has worn off...

3: Follow this guide: http://forums.windower.net/index.php?showtopic=11323
Yes i know some people don't run windower and want nothing to do with it, this post however has nothing to do with it. It is a very detailed guide on how to truly secure your PC with different methods.

and lastly...

4: DON'T SHARE YOUR ACCOUNT!

You could have the best antivirus, fully secure firewall, every protection known to man. But it will all be for naught if your buddy trounces around the internets with little to no protection.

If your account does get compromised, heres what you do:

1: Have access to another account (yes this may be contradictory to what i just said, but this part may be done on the fly. Example: You get hacked, so you ask your buddy for help)
Have your buddy contact a GM through the service and support and report it as Compromised Account. You must be online the whole time or this won't work as you will be communicating with your buddy via MSN or any other instant messenger service.

Once your buddy goes through, have your buddy 'pretend' to be you and report the account compromised. The reason we 'pretend' is sometimes you'll get a good GM, other times you'll get a retard who won't process it if you do not own the account.
The GM will ask for several things as identification, this will include the # of characters you have, their levels, their races, their jobs, their worlds, and the last zone your main was at.
Once you have confirmed these, the GM should lock your account until you properly contact POL. This method is useful if your hacker was smart and waited until after the POL centers closed down for the weekend to hack the character (like mine did).

2: Contact POL via telephone or via the live chat on the POL site. This goes without saying. They'll ask you to confirm a few things such as your POL registeration codes, name, current CC (which may/may not match up), characters (same as above). They'll tell you one of 2 things. Either they believe you and give you your account back (this is provided you provide enough information at the time of the call), or you go through the compromised account procedure (which is what i had to go through because i had lost my POL registeration codes when i moved to another state).
If the latter is the case, they'll tell you that they will send you an email with the compromised account form that you will need to get filled out and notarized (most banks will do this for free if you have an account with them). Personally, i could not wait so i downloaded the form and had it sent the very same day. My impatience paid off, as i never received the alleged form even after asking them to send it to 2 different email addresses 3 separate times.
You can find the form at www.bluegartrls.com/forum , check the FFXI Advanced section and its in the Sticky thread at the top.
Write a letter that you will send along with the compromised form. This letter will indicate when you were hacked, any details you can think of, and ANY additional information you can think of. For me, the only additional information i could give them was the first 4 and last 4 digits of the only other credit card i used, as well as the Aht Urghan and Goddess expansion keys that i registered on the account. The more information you give, the faster i would think they would go through the investigation.
Send both things to the address indicated on the compromised account form via next day or 2nd day delivery. Make sure you are able to track the package so you can confirm if they have received it.

3: Wait. This is the period i didn't like either. I contacted POL at least once a week once they received my forms to check on the investigation. Mostly got 'still investigating', but i mainly did it so they know i'm on their case.

4: Check your email, spam folders daily: You should receive an email from compromised-accounts or something. This email will contain a special code that you will need to keep handy. Contact POL via telephone or email and tell them you received the email, and give them the code. They will ask for the regular things as well to confirm you are who you are. Once that is done, tell them you would like to have your password reset. They'll give you a new password and unlock the account. Immediately go into your account, change all the phony details the hacker put in, and then change your password. MAKE SURE YOUR COMPUTER HAS BEEN REFORMATTED FULLY BEFORE YOU EVEN LOG IN AGAIN!

5: Check your characters: Anything missing? World Shifted? If no, congrats! If yes, contact a GM to get your data restored. This has to be done within a 3 month period from the point of being hacked. Your account will get locked during the investigation period. I presume you get an email stating when the investigation is complete (i never had to go through this step myself as the hacker never even logged onto FFXI, think i didn't even give him time).

Never assume you won't get hacked.

Hope this helps prevent a couple of account thefts.

-Darte
