'Nothing is fair here. Accept it.'
(1) I partied for the first time ever in Valkurm Dunes yesterday morning, at first duoing with a 12WAR/06WHM as a 13BLM. For some reason, later claiming to be a lack of funds, this chap decided to only have an Inferno Axe and Chocobo Vest with him while acting as some sort of tank. Since this was my second time partying since 2007 I thought, 'eh, let's see what happens.' You know what happens, right: death. After getting a raise from Esoul (Pandemonium server), who kicks much ass by the way, I informed him NOT to pull Goblin Butchers who checked VT (I think), run directly at me and stop in front of me. After my second death and raise I noticed something...he was disengaging from the mob and zoning to remove the aggro then coming back. This is what happens when you party with a n00b...or a retard.

(2) I've had a grudge against Crawlers for a little while now, namely because Poison Breath lasted forever when I was level 10. Now I have a grudge against Lizards and their Plague Breath. For some reason, as a 14BLM, Poison spells and Dia wear off very quickly yet that damn Plague Breath has taken at least 133hp and at most 154hp out of my 166hp total. The rub: the mist lizard checks at EP. That's right, an EP mob that is able to practically if not definately kill you one spell: Plague Breath. If it was a DC mob I wouldn't have an issue, I'd be irritated for sure but I would say, 'that's why they call it a Decent Challange. Suck it up, tough guy.' But I'm not a fan of cheapness -this is why I loathe every Mortal Kombat game except the first, those damn combos go on forever!- and this really pissed me off. I ended up wasting 680exp that I earned with my Emperor band dying four times because I refused to pay attention to the fact that Plague Breath equals dead. Now, of course, I could buy Antidotes or sub a job that can use Poisona, but that isn't the issue...it's a damn EP mob taking me out with basically one spell, that's just not right.

Eventually I stopped being an idiot, got back all of the lost exp on other mobs, took my revenge against a lizard and logged off for the night. But before I logged I changed my bazaar comment: 'Nothing is fair here. Accept it.' FFXI is definately an appreciable representation of the real world, where nothing is fair and people intent on destroying the world for their own gain (Server/RMTs anyone?) get about with relative ease. Things that you think would not harm you can and, sometimes, will kill you. Some snakes that are just out of the shell carry enough venom to kill a man, it makes sense that an EP lizard in FFXI should have enough poison in Plague Breath to take out a player 3-6 levels above it...even though the players don't seem to have that sort of option until much higher in level.

(3)Now I can look at things with a sort of amused cynicism while enjoying the game, even if some mobs are incredibly cheap and RMTs never go away. Strange as it seems, I think I can actually enjoy the game more for it.

Just buy like three antidotes at an outpost, I'm sure you have enough money.

Like I said, it's not the poisoning per se but the fact that an EP mob is the one basically killing you with one spell.

There are EP mobs in the game that will kick the ass of my 75 PLD. Though as a general rule, EP mobs have a tendency to be exceptionally difficult for mage types.

Sleep, Nuke, Nuke, Sleep, Nuke, repeat until dead.

Works for everything from EP's to Tiamat >.>

Just don't fight lizards then, lol. You'll learn pretty quick to avoid certain mob types if you can't deal with their specific... intricacies. Try to fight an EP goobbue when you get that high ;)

Yes, I've experienced that twice with those damnable lizards. Fortunately, I put blaze spikes up whenever it wears off outside of battle and fairly often when it wears off in battle. The spikes left me not completely without a defence and I am grateful for that, I can only imagein being petrified in more dangerous areas at higher levels. That would definately suck.

I also tend to go back and forth on what I feel like killing on a particular day. Lizards are ok now and then but even for the Labyrinth Lizards that are EM / DC to me @ 55 in Crawler's Nest, a few wrong moves can still kill you.

Yep if there ever was an accourate bazaar quote, that'd be it lol! It may not be fair but it certainly makes it challenging!

I understand what you're saying.
If you could kill every mob without difficulty it would be a boring game.
If there were no surprises, it would be inaccurate as a game portraying a world.
Anyone who would enjoy a game that had no surprises and didn't present a challenge would hardly be able to call themselves a gamer.

I can look back on all the things I've done in this game that have turned out for the worst and think, "Now I'm all the better because of it."

The fact that he's a WAR/WHM should have been your first clue ;)

I hate it when people say this for the dunes. There's nothing better for him to be using for tanking as a warrior, I mean, he was probably a taru. What should he sub? Nin for... nothing? Mnk for like 5 points of HP and boost for his 12 dmg weaponskills?

I hate that people would rather party with someone in the dunes without a subjob, than one that's "wrong" for endgame.

You'd definitely keep more hate if you didnt waste 6 seconds (6 boost = one provoke) worth of dot time spamming boost ._.

Not to mention the hate from curing yourself, and actually benefiting your tanking.

the 10 mp i'd get for being elvaan at that level? Heh. i'd rather have the boost, thank you ;)

and err.. I don't have to spam.

/ja provoke
/wait 3
/ja boost
/wait 16
/ja boost

granted, i only have war as a subjob, but i've played it up to 37 three times now, & i never had problems holding hate at those low levels.

Ten? Even as elf you should have quite a bit more than that. I'd say around 35?

PS: The number of times you've done ____ in an MMO doesn't really mean anything, even though people love to throw around numbers. "I have ninja to 75, I know everything about it!" "I've taken three jobs through the dunes!" It doesn't mean you weren't doing things wrong all three times.

Anyways, I wasn't trying to say /mnk is horrible, just that war/whm at that level is not a bad choice at all.

the 'done it x times' was for the holding hate. never had a problem with mnk :)

and i don't think it is a good choice at all... boost doesn't get interupted like cure will, which will stop a swing for... what.. 3 seconds per cast?

if it worked for you, sure :) I just tend to avoid inviting war/whm's, doesn't work the same as pld/war even though you'd think it should. never seen one work when ever I played at that level (and I leveled rdm/mnk for a while) ...wait, i'll scratch that. duo/trio/quat, i think it'd work fine, just not 'stereotypical party' setup, I guess.

but, i really do not know anything about melee save for bst past 40 *chuckle*

It could have been, yes, but I thought he may have been like me and had the desire to try different job combinations for the sake of creativity and experimentation. However, he proved himself to just be a bad player.

There's some truth in this, lol. I've noticed that the lower the job level, the less the standard subjob rules seem to apply. And you can get by with some of the wierdest combinations if you're up for experimenting and actually do well.

Although honestly I've never tried subbing anything odd after lvl 8, so I don't know what's best for the dunes other than the standard 'endgame' setup.

I love the Dunes ...its great place to meet new players
And remember we all started somewhere.
I run an LS on Diabolos server mainly for new players.
I think its important to teach them how to play with out being call a noob or a retard.
Without new players this MMO would die.

There is a difference between n00b and new player. New players are definately part of the lifeblodd of the game. N00bs, on the other hand, are those immature players who may or may not be new but act as though they (1) don't understand what they are doing and (2) don't care what they are doing and how it impacts other players. Thus, as you can see, I have no issue at all with new players but with n00bs and differentiate them accordingly. I would like to think that most draw this distinction as well.

There are a number of mobs (mostly in dynamis, though I think there are a few elsehwere) where they basically kill you with a spell/move if you get afflicted with it.

Doom, Death, Mortal Ray, and some more fancy names do exactly what they say >_>

mob casts, mob laughs, you die. <.

My personal favorite is a DC mob that triple attacks a NIN to remove their shadows, crit hits, then special attacks for one very dead NIN (and me, the pissed off WHM that has flash timer at 5sec).

Death and perdition are also >.>. Although they do occur mostly in dynamis, einherjar, nyzul, and salvage, there are normal mobs ingame that do these moves too - it was the original reason I totally HATED CoP - being in the first wave, only for your tank to get doomed every single time fighting through aquaducts sucked (I think it took a day or two to figure out the whole "turn your back" thing).

It happens in Besieged too... those blue tatoo'd Haunts that comes with the Llamia casts perdition :|

Found out first hand, lol. Charged up (expected to die, but not before getting some lawls out of it), noticed a little black swirl effect on me... keeled over dead. It'd be really funny if anyone saw what had happened, lol.

I think those blue tatoo'd haunts are around in the later areas of the reef as well. The Fast-cast Blizaga III haunts of pain and doom.

Although my favorite was when a few friends and I were prodding Ash Dragon for talons (back when they were worth money). It had stripped my shadows with normal attacks, but I had full hp... so I was going to wait for one swing before casting utsu. Then it did Chaos Blade (-80% max hp curse) and stomped me into the floor with one hit >.> That was fun.

Its pretty funny to watch your entire front line keel over and die in rapid succession... up until it comes flying after you with chainspell still active xD

Hahahaha, I hate that eye so much!
I'm notorious in my dynamis linkshell for one thing and one thing only: death... then again, what did they expect when they decided that a level 75 samurai'd be a good main melee assist? Anyway, one day we were doing glacier and I'd made it my goal to not die that run, declared it in LS chat and everything.

So I actually manage to do so... untill we get to the boss, then it went something like this:
Twcblaze uses Tachi: Kasha (700ish damage)
Eyeball SOB uses Chainspell.
Eyeball SOB starts casting Death.
Twcblaze is defeated by Eyeball SOB.
HAHAHAHA! look, Twc's down!
bite me.
