Well, I probably spent WAAAAY too much time playing FF5 and not enough time reviewing it. As a matter of fact, I'm already almost level 20, and through quite a few boss fights already. I told myself I'd regret doing that, but I'll try writing up something anyways.
Our story begins with an introduction to a young boy, who is for some reason named BUTZ. I snickered for hours and hours on end at this. Pretty soon afterwords, we get to watch a meteor crash into the earth, waking up our young hero and leaving him curious. He goes to check it out, and finds the young LENNA and some old fart named GALUF who can't remember anything beyond his name. They soon band together like some buddy roadtrip movie, and go off on their adventures. Soon after, we find a cave that was opened up by the meteor impact, with a healing spring and some more tunnels in it. Following them, we encounter pirates. That's right, pirates. The pirates apparently have some way of sailing without the wind, which recently stopped. We'll cover that later though. You sneak onto the ship, only to be captured by the captain of the ship, who locks you up with the intention of sending a ransom note to the local kingdom, since it turns out Lenna's a princess. Well, the captain sees Lenna's necklace, which for some reason is identical to his, and lets you go, even offering to sail you wherever you need to go. From here, we sail to the Wind Shrine, where Lenna's father apparently went. You fight some baddies, see the Wind Crystal break, and earn your first Jobs. It's all very fun.
Soon after, we leave our pirate crew behind in a nearby town, venturing through a canal to fight a gigantic kraken. Our ship's sea-monster is dragged down by the kraken, and we lose all hope of moving the ship. Our heroes drift off into the sunset, only to wake up in the Ship Graveyard. Here we learn that the captain, FARIS, is actually a girl! Who would have guessed! I certainly didn't, because unlike the GBA version, the SNES version has no portraits to give it away. We fight our way out of the graveyard, to find the King's dragon, who gives the gang a lift to the next crystal. Stuff happens, people get angry, and one dungeon later the water crystal explodes, giving us another set of Jobs to play with. We get saved by Faris' buddy the sea monster, who then dies after spitting us up on the beach somewhere. ------
Okay, so at this point, I was having quite a bit of fun. The gameplay has turned out to work quite well, and the music is just as good as I'd expect from a Final Fantasy game. Graphically, it's nothing special, but graphics aren't always everything, are they? The plot was and is still a little thin at this point, and remains so even up to where I am currently. Friends who've beaten the game tell me it gets better as it goes on, and I hope they're right. That's all for today, see you next time! |
