Nikon D90 and Canon 5D MKII shooting HD video [22 Sep 2008|09:14pm]

roxics
So what do you guys think of these cameras? Both shoot video now. The Nikon shoots 24fps at 720p resolution for $1000 and the Canon shoots 1080p at 30fps for $2700.

Exciting times we live in! I'm planning to pick up a D90 myself, hopefully before the end of the year. From the footage I've seen from it looks like 35mm film to me. Amazing.

I'm also hearing rumors Nikon has a big announcement in February 2009. Rumors are rumors but there has been some speculation they are building a killer new digital cinema camera for under $4000 to try and wipe out the Canon pro video business. But of course these are just rumors. Rumors are fun though.

Casting [17 Aug 2008|11:05pm]

Hello, new member here!

I'm currently involved in making a semi-amateur movie with Icepax productions and Invention TV studios, and have recently been named casting director, despite being a complete amateur myself - both the director and the producer, who are the ones with actual experience, are too busy, and out of the rest of us currently involved, I got the vote.

I've got most of the main roles filled, and am just waiting on confirmation for a couple of them, by tapping my social circle and the local university theatre soc, but I still have plenty of featured extra slots to fill, and the director has requested they be both filled and available to rehearse by/on *next Wednesday*, at our usual location which is central Bath - that's the 27th; hardly a large amount of time! I'm also running out of places to source people from - does anyone know of a group/community/website/mailing list that I could try to find people for these parts? What do people think the chances are of me finding people to fill them, given their lack of importance to the plot, lack of time to find them and lack of pay? Am I looking at a hopeless situation, or is it possible?

August's music video with piglets rockin' it out
Still focusing on shooting and editing, so just videos for now so that I don't have to deal with sound. When I get more confident I'll even buy a real camera.

Just an introduction... [11 Aug 2008|09:56pm]

skunkdog
Hello All

I just joined this community... I'm from South Africa, and am currently working to complete my first two short films. I started out with an 8mm Yashika camera, which I love because it's completely manual, but the main problem I encountered, along with the Super 8 Minolta I bought afterwards, was not being able to track down any film stock in South Africa. When I did find websites that sold what I needed, it worked out too expensive for me to follow through.

So, some months ago I bought a JVC digital video camera, which is a godsend with its 1 hour recording time per tape. It didn't come with a memory card though, so I'm currently looking to buy a fire-wire port so I'd be able to transfer the data from Mini DV to my computer, hopefully with minimal quality loss. Just using an ordinary USB port didn't work too well, and the quality loss was immense.

My venture into film making began after I read 'Film as Art' by Arnheim. I initially wanted to go into film theory / criticism, but my interest started to shift and I started to want to put the theory I've read into action. The two films I am working on are currently dialogue (and mostly human) free, and my biggest challenge at the moment is to film less intense footage to act as a bridge between sequences. This will hopefully be resolved and become more clear during editing.

The films of Maya Deren, Stan Brakhage, Derek Jarman and Kenneth Anger inspire my mind to expand with regards to what I believed to be possible in the film medium, but I also have great admiration for the films of Catherine Breillat, Pasolini, Gus van Sant, Cronenberg, Bunuel and others. I only count on them to inspire me, though, and I don't consciously emulate any of these filmmakers when I plan what I'm going to do next.

I don't think I'll go to film school in South Africa, where the emphasis is very much on making a living as a commercial filmmaker. If anybody would like to exchange ideas or just chat sometime, feel free to email me or look me up on AIM.

Thanks,
Alex
