The Seventh Seal (Ingmar Bergman, 1957)

The Seventh Seal (Swedish: Det sjunde inseglet) is an existential 1957 Swedish film directed by Ingmar Bergman about the journey of a medieval knight (Max von Sydow) across a plague-ridden landscape. Its best-known scene features the knight playing chess with the personification of Death, his life resting on the outcome of the game. The film has long been regarded a masterpiece of cinema.

Among the cool things about growing up in Stockholm are that I saw two children's adapted play versions of this before I was old enough to see the movie. Not really my favorite Bergman, but still great.

There are a lot of funny parts, actually, despite the subject matter.

great stills.

oh, and you need to put commas in-between the different tags or else it becomes one big super tag.

The scene where the religious procession interrupts the play is one of my favorite things on film. <3

There is a song by In the Nursery called The Seventh Seal, and it does seem to be referring to this exact movie. :o

I actually posted the lyrics in my journal earlier this year:

Yeah, their apocalyptic lyrics is surely refers to the movie.

But the title of the movie refers to a passage about the end of the world from the Book of Revelation, used both at the very start of the film, and again towards the end, beginning with the words "And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour" (Revelation 8:1).

Wonderful. I'm coming very late to Bergman, I only just sat down to absorb The Seventh Seal this last summer, but what a masterpiece indeed.

I have no words to describe how amazing this movie is.I also loved "Through a glass darkly" but I have to admit I didn't manage to watch "Persona".I am always thinking of giving it another try but I don't know why I never put the dvd inside the dvd player, the first scene is just too much for me.:(
