Everybody always argues with me, they say it's a happy ending. It's the least happy ending I've ever seen in any film of all time.

Good stills, btw.

I agree. Their faces at the end, they look so lost, like they're sort of realising what they've actually done

plus the music, which recalls a moment of misery!

I mean, I actually don't understand how anybody could think it was a happy ending, but I don't understand a lot of things, like marriage and long division and fraternities. So. You know.

C'est la vie, my friend. There are some things that I don't want to understand, including marriage, long division and fraternities.

I totally see where you're coming from, but I think it's a happy ending with a question mark. They're definitely thinking 'What now?' but I don't see it as a regret, it's more of a healthy fear of having to grow up & take the next step.

I never doubt that they don't end up where they want to be, they're just scared.

I think you are right. when they filmed that scene they never said cut so everything that occurs there is completely natural and was meant to be some what unexpected, had they just been smiling the entire time it would of been predictable. I think it's also suppose to be a real image of the youth of that era with so much uncertainties and transitions, pretty much like Hoffman's character all together.

Those people are completely wrong. It's a beautiful ending, but very devastating when they lose their smiles and realize what they've just done.

It always seems a sinister ending to me, such is the influence of the music.

You can't know whether it's good or bad though, it hints both ways; that's why it's so great, it pleases both realists and romantics...
