    OVFF?
Any one know anything about hotel issues for OVFF?  I tried to make reservations tonight, but they said the hotel is totally sold out, including the room block.

    DC-Area Con Offering Filk Space
So, what are DC-area filkers going to be up to two weeks from now?

Capclave, the Washington Science Fiction Association's annual literary convention, has agreed to set aside some space for filk Friday and Saturday nights, from 10 PM onward. Several area musicians, including Rob [info]pclips Balder and Danny Birt (not well known in filk circles, that I know of, but quite talented indeed), are lined up, but more are always welcome. A good turnout may help encourage Capclave to set up some filk programming and more concerts, which would of course be a good thing...so if you're going to be in the DC area the weekend of the 17th-19th, by all means swing by.

In addition to open filk space, Capclave has interesting panels, mostly on literary SF, and a fascinating dealers' room. It's a great, and growing, con.

Capclave is at the Hilton in Rockville, on the Rockville Pike, and near the Rockville Metro station.

    GAFilk Songbook Deadline
    . . . Is today.

It's today if you need me to transcribe your song. Basically, if it's waiting in my email box by the time I wake up tomorrow and I have room for it, I can get it done.

If you want to put in a parody, or you have already transcribed your song(s) into Finale, something Finale can read, or a pdf, jpg, tiff, gif or some such, you may have until November 14, 2008.
(Pay no attention to those '2007's on the publicity page of Gafilk.org!)

    Please, send your entries to
    songbook@gafilk.org

    2009 GAFILK SONGBOOK
    Hello filkers!

It is that fun autumnal time of the year again when I ask for songs -- nay! I beg you for songs to go in our annual GAFILK songbook.

The deadline for songs requiring transcription is September 30th.
If you are submitting parodies OR doing your own transcription on Finale, you have until November 16th.

Also, I wish to have a few first readers. I will be asking two particular people already -- one because he was there at the time I thought of having first readers -- the other because he's caught a songbook error in the past.

So, if you plan to have a submission in the songbook, and you would like to look over the songbook a bit for me after I have various works transcribed, please email me.

    I would appreciate it!

All songbook correspondence goes to songbook@gafilk.org.

Pegasus: Once more, with better counting
    Heya everyone!

Last minute reminder for nominating - you have about, oh, 26 hours from when I'm
posting this to send in your ballots. Once it's August in California, nominations
    are closed.

The nominating ballot is here: http://www.ovff.org/pegasus/2008nomballot.html

And the brainstorming poll results (in case you want something to inspire your nominating
    thoughts) are here: http://www.ovff.org/pegasus/opinions.html

This is your last chance to get bugged by me for weeks! How can you pass it up?

(For those of you who saw this on mailing lists yesterday: no, July didn't lose a day. I simply jumped forward 24 hours in my head - I'd have sworn yesterday was Wednesday. oh, well.)

    All the best,

    Pegasus Nominating Reminder
    Heya everyone!

July is winding to a close, and that means that we're reaching the end of nominating season! So if you haven't submitted a nominating ballot for the Pegasus Awards this year and you'd like to, you need to do so soon. Once it's August in California, nominations are closed.

    The nominating ballot is here.

And the brainstorming poll results (in case you want something to inspire your nominating thoughts) are here.

(Note that in the case of multiple nominating ballots being submitted by one person, I generally count the most recent one.)

Nominating is not a duty, but we do get a more representative ballot if we have high participation at the nominating stage. So I definitely encourage those who are interested to submit a nominating ballot. Thanks for your support!

    All the best,

So there I was, getting ready to go to work last night, when the phone rings. I didn't recognize the number, so screened the call. It turned out to be a man named Connor Cochran, who'd gotten my number from googling NY filk; he tried to email me the following via my old address. We spoke for a while, and the short of it is that Peter S. Beagle is performing in Wurtsboro this Friday and Saturday nights (yeah, I know. Shabbat. Sorry 'bout that.) and publicity has been scant on the ground. Wurtsboro is about 75 miles out of NYC, up Route 17.

I agreed to spread this around, and urge you to do the same.

For me, I expect to be in Ithaca this weekend -- twice as far away from Wurtsboro as I'd be in NYC -- and I'm still working out whether it's possible to go. Dude, it's Peter S. Beagle!

Anyway, here's what he sent. Maybe I'll see some of you there.

(Please don't hurt me for the HTML inside the cut; it's taken directly from the email by the power of Semagic.)

    Contata surprise!
    Contata news flash!

Christine Lavin will be joining us Friday night and Saturday at Contata to help us raise money for Tom Smith. She'll be chipping in at the benefit concert with the song There Will be Peace, which is the song Tom was trying to get on stage to sing when he had his fall. She's hoping to video tape it and send it to Tom.

She encourages people to learn the guitar chords, so we can do a really big work-up of the song. You can hear the song and see the words at http://www.rhapsody.com/tompaxton/yourshoesmyshoes/peacewillcome/lyrics.html.

Please spread the word and we'll try to send Tom a great big cheer-up video.

    Shhhh. Don't tell Tom!

For those of you who have been waiting with baited breath
Carla Ulbrich has graciously agreed to help us fill the gap left in Contata 2008's programming by Tom Smith's untimely injury. Carla's X Healing Factor has kicked in since Contata 2005, leaving her in good voice and walking on both legs. We hope that some of that good karma will be passed along to Tom. Everyone on the Contata 2008 committee wishes Tom a speedy recovery. We hope to see him bouncing around at future cons.

[info]iamcompufrog Needs Your Prayers, Spells, or Good Wishes
On Monday, June 2nd my real-life friend, long-time Colorado (and formerly Arizona/California) science fiction convention fan, filk musician, and worldcon volunteer Bruce Dane ([info]iamcompufrog), already ill with degenerative disc disease, fell while taking his youngest daughter to a movie and was paralyzed "from the nipples down," according to his ex-wife, Michelle ([info]iamcompubear). He was taken to Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs and underwent an emergency laminectomy (which appears to have gone well) on Thursday, June 5th to relieve pressure on his spinal cord. He currently is in Intensive Care -- he needed to be intubated and subsequently underwent a tracheotomy to relieve irritation of his mouth and throat from the ventilator tube. Currently he is in and out of consciousness; Michelle says she believes he has been occasionally lucid since the tracheotomy but she is not certain: due to being on the ventilator he cannot speak.

Bruce has been on disability for many years and was still in recovery from lymphoma, surgery, and chemical and radiation therapies at the time of the accident.

Michelle, and Bruce's adult daughters Meera ([info]mtfierce) and Kelly ([info]geminimoonfrog), have been at his bedside in shifts, more-or-less around the clock. If you want to send Bruce a card, which will be read and shown to him whenever he's awake, you can send it to

    Bruce M. Dane
    Memorial Hospital/Health Center
    1400 East Boulder Street
    Room 4634
    Colorado Springs, Colorado, 80909-5599

Or, if you want to avoid going through the hospital mail room (as a former hospital worker, I know that relying on such can be chancy) you can send your card to

    Bruce M. Dane
    c/o Eris-Meihem Partners
    408 Canon Avenue
    Manitou Springs, Colorado 80829-1714

where family will pick it up and bring it to him.

Bruce has been my good friend for thirty years and has suffered much in the last five -- I'm worried this may more than he can physically take. Please give good wishes/pray/spell for him and his immediate and extended families as is appropriate for you.

    Pegasus Nominations are Open
    Hello!

It's that time of the year again! (Actually, it's past that time of the year again, but the Pegasus Committee had an attack of real life - sorry about that.) Anyway, the nominating ballot for the 2008 Pegasus awards is now available here. The brainstorming results should be available in the next day or two, linked off of that page.

Nominations are open until it's August in California (i.e., 12:01 a.m. August 1st, Pacific Daylight Time.) I look forward to seeing what y'all choose!

    Found fillk via CNN.com
I just saw this article about Astronomer Alan Marscher of Boston University who writes songs about science who writes songs about black holes. Filk is not mentioned in the artcile, but they do refer to Queen's "39" in the article.

    http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/05/21/black.holes/index.html

When I saw the article, I figured the might be about Dr. Seti.
