2009 Pegasus Nominations are Open
Hello everyone! Those of you at Marcon may have seen the paper copies of these, but due to the Pegasus Committee having an attack of Real Life (TM), we only just got the electronic versions ready. In any case, without further ado, I am pleased to announce that nominations for the 2009 Pegasus Awards are now open! You can see the results of the brainstorming poll here and the ballot is here. The floating categories for this year are "A Little Bit Country" and "A Little Bit Rock and Roll." As ever, I look forward to seeing what your nominations are. Nominations close when it is August in California, i.e., 12:01 a.m. August 1st, Pacific Time. You can't nominate early and often, but you can certainly have fun deciding who to put on your nominating ballot! All the best, Erica Neely Pegasus Evangelista | | Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009 | 4:57 pm [wyld_dandelyon]

A writing venture
I don't know how far the news has traveled, but I got laid off in January, and am still seeking employment. So, I have decided to try a new thing, and put some of my writing out into the world using a model variously called cyberfunded creativity and crowdfunding. Today is SF&F Writer's Day. I'm hoping it's an auspicious day to start this new venture. Reading haikujaguar and shadesong and ysabetwordsmith , and seeing how they interact with their readers, I realized I have both sat down alone to write a story, and sat around a table telling a story for people who were participating, as characters, in my world. But I really haven't tried writing with kibitzers, so I'm going to try an experiment, and you are all invited to kibitz, to ask questions, make suggestions, make comments, and so on. I have a story snippet that I think will do for a start, but initially I'm going to post a short-short to introduce you a bit to the world. This is the world that the novel I'm working on is set in, but will be a different story. There will be a donate button; if you enjoy, please let me know--and please let your friends know everyone is welcome. Please don't give more than you can afford, and thanks for reading. I wanted to particularly invite all of my friends in the filk community, to let you all know you are very welcome to at least poke your noses into my LJ, and see what I've been up to. edited to add the link: http://wyld-dandelyon.livejournal.com/35 367.html<input ... ></input><input ... > Current Mood: welcoming | 7:28 am [alymid]

SJ Tucker house Concert - Chicago Area Who: S.J. “Sooj” Tucker
What: A Concert!!!
When: Sunday July 5th
More When: The concert will start at 2pm, I would show up early to get seats and snacks.
Where: Evan and My house . . . Follow the link for more specifics and location and facilities http://alyse.org/home/
RSVP: YES please!!!! Bring your friends, as well, just RSVP for both you and them. . . (that way I can try to have enough chairs setup and also food enough for everyone)
Why: Have you heard her??? If you have, you aren’t asking this question. If you haven’t, come and find out how excellent she is.
Are you a Chicago area folkey? If so then you may have seen S.J. at one of her performaces in the area. Are you a local filker? You might have seen S.J. at Duckon this year playing with Vixy and Tony or Seanan. Do you frequent Renaissance Faires and other outdoor festivals? You might have seen her on her own or with Tricky Pixie. Even if you aren’t any of the above, I can promise that S.J. puts on an dynamic and energetic show that will have you singing along, laughing, and dancing (even if it is just in your seat).
You don’t have to just take my word though:
“Tucker has a voice in a million — powerful, hypnotic, untamed and yet utterly controlled. She sings from the gut, but hers is a trained instrument.”
— Green Man Review
“With such a huge, soulful voice, one would be surprised to see that Skinny White Chick is in fact a skinny white chick.”
— In the Studio
“She’s got Dar [Williams]’s sardonic sincerity coupled with [Ani] DiFranco’s passion, Janis Ian’s vocal chops, and the deft guitar hands of Emily Saliers. Her lyrics swell up from the underworld where so many artists venture but few truly understand.”
— Phil Brucato, NewWitch magazine
If you won’t take my word, or their word, you can read more about her or listen to her at one of her many locations on the web:
When the concert is over, we will convert the living room into a song circle. Please bring yourself, your instruments, your voice, and your willingness to participate! If you are bringing instruments for the song circle PLEASE try to come early for the ease of instrument storage.
As usual Evan and I will provide snacks and soda and water, but potluck items are always welcome. Please RSVP by responding to this or by emailing to music @ alyse.org – you can also use that email address to send any questions you might have. You can also go to the website to learn more about Music Events at our house: http://alyse.org/home/music-faq/

S.J. Tucker Live in Jersey City Sooj came to play at ladymondegreen's palacial residence. It rained outside but we were warm and cozy inside (sometimes a little too warm). We heard many new releases plus some established favourites. Josh & Lisa (please don't make me search LJ handles) danced strategically in a dark corner of the living room. The techies talked tech and Ben Newman played a sample afterwards from a play he wrote about a light-sensitive civilisation. My own light sensitivity was challenged mid-concert when a couple of photo-flashes detonated. The only real explosion was in my neural pathways. I took my pills and tried not to make either my reaction or the issue of my condition bigger than it was. I later explained that listening to good music in the dark was the greatest help of all. FilkCONtinental wants YOU!
Lots of space available at FilkCONtinental! This year we are in the surprising situation that we we currently only have ~60 registrations for con memberships. We pre-reserved 120 places, i.e. we currently only have 50% of the rooms taken!!! Thus we decided last weekend that we will have to cancel one floor at the castle if we do not receive more registrations until june 7th, especially from the 'there-still-is-lots-of-time-till-regist ration' people among you... If you want to come to FilkCONtinental but have not registered yet: please do register NOW! If you cannot pay within the regular 14 days period, just ask us - we probably can find an individual agreement! :) This year we have absolutely wonderful guests from the USA: Jeff and Maya Bohnhoff - and maybe you even don't know what you will be missing! Just drop by on their homepage at http://www.jeffandmaya.com/Among those of you who know the 'Kleiner grüner Marsmensch' - Steve will be conducting this year's choir workshop as barbershop workshop. There will be more dance and music workshops, and there will be a release party with a number of surprises! And aside from the two guest's concerts there will be a number of exciting spots of people you never (or for a loooong time) have not heard yet! Thus go to the registration forms! http://www.sf-fantasy.de/filkcon2009/f_anmeldung_e.cfmIf you have been pondering visiting FilkCONtinental, THIS is your chance! The "excuse" that the con probably might be book out obviously does not count not this year! We would be really happy to see you in October at FilkCONtinental again! Consonance: Crunchy filk goodness (definitely!) and imminent hotel deadline (maybe)
Yes, Consonance 2009 is only two weeks away! Come on down and have more fun than you can possibly imagine in one weekend! Consonance 2009, the San Francisco Bay Area Filk Convention March 6-8 San Jose-Silicon Valley Crowne Plaza GOHs: Vixy and Tony (the delightful Michelle Dockrey and Tony Fabris) International Guests: Playing Rapunzel (the amazing Mich Sampson & Marilisa Valtazanou) Interfilk Guest: the one and only Mary Bertke Toastmistress: the world-renowned Erica Neely This is the time of year we do a sort of dance we call the Consonance Hotel Shuffle. After Saturday, February 21 (tomorrow as I write this), the con hotel will no longer be contractually obligated to give you the special con rate when you book a room. In every prior year, the hotel has allowed registrations at the con rate after the deadline, even walk-in registrations at the con, but this could be the year the hotel employees turn into Zombies Sadists From Pluto and make you pay the rack rate.So make your hotel reservation for Consonance immediately, if not sooner! And you can still save a few bucks if you mail in your preregistration right away! Everything you need to know about Consonance is on our web site, where you will find links to guest info, hotel info, and our PR. See you there! Conflikt 3 info
Conflikt 3 info I am at Conflikt listening to Seanan's GOH concert. They (just before her concert) announced whom they asked to follow this year's great guests. The 2010 Conflikt, Jan 29-31, 2010 guests are - Guest of Honour: Tom Smith Toastmaster: Andrew Ross Interfilk Guest: October Country (Celtic duo from Texas) More info (once the concom recovers, I figure) will be at Conflikt.org within a couple of weeks. Memberships will be available at conflikt.org (No, pricing is not on the flyer. It only shows the at con pricing.) And, no, I don't know any info. I live on the east coast, not in the North West. It helps to put the RIGHT convention name in the posting... (Sorry, I am on east coast time at a west coast convention.) | | Friday, January 23rd, 2009 | 8:20 am [callylevy]
