SJ Tucker house Concert - Chicago Area

    Who: S.J. “Sooj” Tucker
    What:
    A Concert!!!
    When:
    Sunday July 5th
    More When:
The concert will start at 2pm, I would show up early to get seats and snacks.
    Where:
Evan and My house . . . Follow the link for more specifics and location and facilities http://alyse.org/home/
    RSVP:
YES please!!!! Bring your friends, as well, just RSVP for both you and them. . . (that way I can try to have enough chairs setup and also food enough for everyone)
    Why:
Have you heard her??? If you have, you aren’t asking this question. If you haven’t, come and find out how excellent she is.

Are you a Chicago area folkey? If so then you may have seen S.J. at one of her performaces in the area. Are you a local filker? You might have seen S.J. at Duckon this year playing with Vixy and Tony or Seanan. Do you frequent Renaissance Faires and other outdoor festivals? You might have seen her on her own or with Tricky Pixie. Even if you aren’t any of the above, I can promise that S.J. puts on an dynamic and energetic show that will have you singing along, laughing, and dancing (even if it is just in your seat).

You don’t have to just take my word though:

“Tucker has a voice in a million — powerful, hypnotic, untamed and yet utterly controlled. She sings from the gut, but hers is a trained instrument.”
    — Green Man Review

“With such a huge, soulful voice, one would be surprised to see that Skinny White Chick is in fact a skinny white chick.”
    — In the Studio

“She’s got Dar [Williams]’s sardonic sincerity coupled with [Ani] DiFranco’s passion, Janis Ian’s vocal chops, and the deft guitar hands of Emily Saliers. Her lyrics swell up from the underworld where so many artists venture but few truly understand.”
    — Phil Brucato, NewWitch magazine

If you won’t take my word, or their word, you can read more about her or listen to her at one of her many locations on the web:

When the concert is over, we will convert the living room into a song circle. Please bring yourself, your instruments, your voice, and your willingness to participate! If you are bringing instruments for the song circle PLEASE try to come early for the ease of instrument storage.

As usual Evan and I will provide snacks and soda and water, but potluck items are always welcome. Please RSVP by responding to this or by emailing to music @ alyse.org – you can also use that email address to send any questions you might have. You can also go to the website to learn more about Music Events at our house: http://alyse.org/home/music-faq/

    ConCertino! -20 and counting
Oh My! Only 20 more days until ConCertino! So much to do, so much to do!

    * Reserve Your Room (SRSLY! Room block closes TODAY!!)

    * Arrange transportation. Plane tickets? Train tickets? Bus reservations? Gas up the car? Buy new walking shoes? Get the rims aligned on your Schwinn? Please feel welcomed to use this comment space as a place to find rideshares. You can find directions here

    * Can't afford a room of your own? Please feel welcomed to use this comment space as a place to find roomshares. Your room is $89 per night, but your half of the bed is only $22.25. 75% savings!!

    * Plan to contribute some Volunteer Time! Want to make new friends and meet new people? Volunteer! Want to know your way around audio recording equipment? Volunteer! Looking for a way to pass those 15 minutes of extra time? Volunteer! Want the concom members to stay friendly and crunchy in milk? Volunteer! (There might even be super secret special pins for thems who volunteer. But shhhh! Don't tell anyone. That's just between you, me, and these here pixels.)

    * Get your songbook in order :) Where'd all those lyrics go? Oh, and that found filk from last week? The current set list? Oh, and the chords to that new song.

    * Buy a bathing suit (OK, maybe that's just me, but the hotel pool has a view of a castle. Well, ok, it's not a castle; it's a nearby hotel that -looks- like a castle, but still...castle! There will be synchronized underwater filk swimming again!)

    * Get new strings, reeds, picks, pads, oil, and all that other instrumental first aid. Especially that most important one - a single-room cool air humidifier, the best defense ever against concrud and one of the better ways to keep your vocals happy.

    * Let the concom know if you have any unusual circumstances of which we should be aware (particularly, anything that might be amiss with your membership) You can email your unusual circumstances to the email address listed at the bottom of the page linked here

    * Arrange your transportation home. Because, while we love you and all hotels love your business, sadly even the best of things will come to their timely end.

So, get going on that to-do list, ladies and gentlemen. No time to waste! Minus 20 and counting.

We're so excited! We can't wait to see each and every one of you there any minute now!

    FilkCONtinental wants YOU!
Lots of space available at FilkCONtinental!

This year we are in the surprising situation that we we currently only have ~60 registrations for con memberships. We pre-reserved 120 places, i.e. we currently only have 50% of the rooms taken!!!

Thus we decided last weekend that we will have to cancel one floor at the castle if we do not receive more registrations until june 7th, especially from the 'there-still-is-lots-of-time-till-registration' people among you...

If you want to come to FilkCONtinental but have not registered yet: please do register NOW! If you cannot pay within the regular 14 days period, just ask us - we probably can find an individual agreement! :)

This year we have absolutely wonderful guests from the USA: Jeff and Maya Bohnhoff - and maybe you even don't know what you will be missing! Just drop by on their homepage at  http://www.jeffandmaya.com/

Among those of you who know the 'Kleiner grüner Marsmensch' - Steve will be conducting this year's choir workshop as barbershop workshop. There will be more dance and music workshops, and there will be a release party with a number of surprises! And aside from the two guest's concerts there will be a number of exciting spots of people you never (or for a loooong time) have not heard yet!

Thus go to the registration forms!
    http://www.sf-fantasy.de/filkcon2009/f_anmeldung_e.cfm
If you have been pondering visiting FilkCONtinental, THIS is your chance! The "excuse" that the con probably might be book out obviously does not count not this year!

We would be really happy to see you in October at FilkCONtinental again!

    Greetings

    Kirstin

It ended up rather fanish and filky, so I thought I would point all of you all to

Streaming audio from GAFilk, aXXIdental or FKO?

A quick question for anyone from GAFilk, aXXIdental or FilkOntario.

Since I won't be at any of these to take part myself (which saddens me greatly), is anyone planning on doing an audio stream? And even though I wasn't planning on them anyway, any plans for a stream from Conflikt or Consonance?

    Let's All Commit A Song!!
The holidays are winding down. The long cold dark nights of winter are settling in. What to do? What to do?

I know! It's time for the Concertino '09 songbook!

That's right, ladies and gentlemen, Concertino is looking for songs for our next songbook :) And all you have to do to join is to email it in the next time you put down your guitar.

    Who: You!

What: send Concertino your original lyrics, your original tunes, or your original lyrics to previously existing tunes

Where: lyrics or sheet music to songbook@concertino.net (.mp3 submissions can be discussed with [info]maedbh7)

When: As Soon As Possible. Deadlines are funny things and they have a way of creeping up. So, how about you send them Real Soon Now, m'kay? (Ok, in truth, I forget when the deadline is. Soon. But not the end of January.)

Questions? Comments? Concerns? No? Ok, great! Send us all those fabulous new songs I know you've all been writing :) See you soon at the next local filk, -H...

It was 40 years ago today
(also posted in my own journal)

It was 40 years ago today...that man left the Earth for the first time. Apollo 8 was launched from Cape Kennedy, Fla., at 7:50 a.m., EST, on December 21, 1968. Frank F. Borman, II, James A. Lovell, Jr and William A. Anders were on their way to the moon. First departure from Earth orbit, first manned craft to come under the effect of lunar gravity, first manned mission to enter lunar orbit and 10 orbits later, first to leave it. More details here and a NASA summary here Their Christmas Eve broadcast was heard live (or tape delayed to the next day) by about one-quarter of the Earth.

The Guardian, UK has this article on Anders picture that has become iconic.

My endeavor to see a shuttle launch
Oh, I think I will duplicate the post in my own journal here, for those others of you who do not read my journal.
    ---
    First,a picture:

    Then the sound:
that is delayed by the distance from launch. Delayed by about 58 seconds. Turn on your sub-woofer and turn up the volume. The rumble you hear near the launch is wind on the mic.

My friend in Daytona Beach has been inviting me to come down for a while, and this time seemed to be the time to go. Thanks to his hospitality, staying at his place, I only needed 3 nights in motels the entire week I was gone, coming out costing about the same as a two-person room-share for an SF convention.

I did not know that I was there to see what could be the last night time shuttle launch. It is more impressive than what could be captured on chip, as either the camera could not lock on and focus on the intense pin of light going into the sky, or the camera is overwhelmed by the light. It was neat to see a 95% full moon in the sky to go with the launch, it rose about an hour before. From our view in Titusville, I would guess if you were further south, toward Cocoa Beach, one might have seen the shuttle bisect the moon. We traveled from Daytona for the hour plus drive to get in town and looking for a spot before it got dark.
At 5pm it was getting dark, at 6pm it was dark. The spot we found was not in Space View Park, but a little bit north, where the parking in the Sears parking lot was free, as opposed to other places asking for $10 to $20 for a spot. A little bit a walking got us to a place on the shore of the inter-coastal waterway. The extra time in our spot was worth it, as we got into conversations with others there and the last two hours went by quickly, as the crushing crowd came in behind us. While some rain was possible, the day was clear and dry and near 87 degrees, with launch time (7:55pm) temperature still in the upper 70's. We were able to see a pinpoint of light in the sky up to Main Engine Cut-Off (MECO) about 7 minutes after the launch.
Using a map, it looks like we were about 12 miles away from launch pad 39A.
The traffic to leave was quite heavy, showing us how many people had come in after their work or school hours. The high school football game going on might have paused to see the launch rise above the stands.

My friend will usually view a launch from his front porch up in Daytona (rushing from TV when they show the launch) and sometimes he gets to hear the then low rumble of the launch a little bit later.

I travelled down via I-75, turning left at Ocala, but took a sunshine view back the first day, heading up next to the Atlantic Ocean on A1A, meeting up with US 1 in St. Augustine, and except for the loop around Jacksonville, stayed on that for the last bit of Florida and went thru Georgia state-line to state-line on it, continueing into Columbia, SC, picking up I-77 north to Canton, Ohio, crossing back thru Ohio on US 30. Friday was record warm in Florida, Monday was sudden snow squalls in Canton, Ohio. Maybe only 100 miles extra for the return trip.
